Butterflies.

2003 Words
Persephone's POV. I do not know how those words came out of my mouth but they did. In fact, they came out with so much confidence and assurance, it surprised me. It is not something I put too much thought on, in precision, I said it immediately it came to my mind. Needless to say, I was as shocked as Damien was when I said it. "How did you know that?" He asks "I--I don't know" I answer sincerely. "What do you mean you don't know?" "I just don't." He stands up from the floor and looks down at me. "I am a vampire" He agrees, catching me by surprise. I immediately stand up too, moving further into the wall in fear. "Did you bring me here to kill me?" I ask in a shaky voice. "Yes" He says "but then I realized that I couldn't" "What?" He looks squarely at me and takes a few steps forward, making me move more into the wall--as if that is even possible because my back is already pressed against it-- he stops when both of our chests are pressing against each other and because of his height coupled with my petite frame, he has to look down at me. "I know I used a wrong approach to ask you that question but I really need an answer....what are you Persephone?" "I- I don't know. I really don't." I meander my way from between him and the wall till I am in the middle of the room. I then begin to pace around, with my thoughts going all over the place. What is happening to me? It is like my life took a complete 360° over night. I shut my eyes for a moment and the next time I open them, I am in a house in the middle of nowhere. That house happening to belong to a vampire and now that same vampire who brought me to his house to suck all the blood he could from my body is telling me that he cannot. What the heck is going on? "You happened to know within 24 hours that I am a vampire but all through your eighteen- nineteen years of living, you still don't know what you are?" He raises his brows in genuine confusion. To ashamed to speak-- because he is saying the truth-- I just nod my head at him, causing him to shake his in disbelief. "Well, since you can't feed me and you don't know what the f**k you are, you can as well leave my house. I don't need you". The moment he says this my mind immediately goes to my father who is probably looking everywhere for me and telling himself that when he finds me, he will kill me with his bare hands jist like he did to my mum. I may not know how I got here but I cannot leave. If I leave my father would definitely find me. Damien turns to leave but I speak up. "You need me" "Excuse me?" "You are curious too. You want to know who I am" That feeling of assurance seeps through my veins again as I say these words. "But you don't know. And what makes you think you need to stay in my house for me to know what you are?" "I don't know. I just....I have nowhere else to go" I admit in a small voice. "I really shouldn't care about that now, should I?" He keeps his lips in a thin line as he turns to leave. "I could be your maid" I blurt out before I could stop myself "I can cook, clean....whatever you need me to do" "I am pretty sure you can see for yourself that I do not need a maid, kitten" He smirks. I look around me and of a truth, he does not need a maid. I don't know how but this house has no single iota of dirt. "I could clean my house with just a snap of my fingers" "But you can't coo--" "I definitely can. Not that I eat anyway, as you know, I feed on what runs through your veins, not mashed potatoes" "But certainly you eat normal meals once in a while at least" I argue desperately. "Only when I am forced to" He seems to be enjoying how flushed I look while looking for other reasons to stay in his home. "I could give you my blood" I say halfheartedly. He laughs. "Did you not hear me the first time. I said I cannot drink your blood" "Why not" "It is not edible. In other words, it is bitter. Too bitter for me" he says from across the room. "Are you sure--" And in a split second, he is in front of me. He pulls my wrist up to my own nose. "Sniff it" he commands. I sniff my wrist at his command, although I don't percieve anything other than the fragrance of the body wash I used to take my bath before bed. "It may smell nice to you but trust me, any vampire that tastes your blood could be in danger of eternal termination" "Uh--uh I-I--" Unable to speak, I pull my wrist from his grasp and cower backwards onto the bed. He smugly smiles and moves backwards also. "You still wanna earn your stay?" He asks and I nod. "Come with me then" He turns on his heels and walks out of the room, leaving me to follow. After a few seconds of trying to catch my breath, I walk out of the room and he is nowhere to be found. The door directly in front of me is the entrance door so I assume he went through there. Pulling the door open, I am hit with the darkness of the night and the lukewarm breeze that roams the large clearing. The clearing that leads straight into the woods. The moon looks so big from my angle, it only makes the night more beautiful. It is then that I realize that inside the house is freezing cold, but I happened to be in warm clothes. As I am about to step outside, Damien appears in my front. A strangled scream escapes my lips and my hands fly to my mouth. "Told you to stop sneaking around, haven't I?" He is so close to me, I could feel his cold breath on my face. Everything about him is cold, even his eyes. "I lost you" I simply say. "What I want to show you is at the back. Follow me, don't loose me this time, kitten" He walks back inside and I follow suit. I try to ignore the crazy butterflies that swarm my belly at the nickname he called me but I fail miserably. With his back turned to me, I fan my face with my palms to get rid of the heat that rushes to my cheeks. When we get to the back, he pushes the door open and steps outside, the moon our only source of light. In the yard of the house, there is a little garden where lilies are growing beautifully and also a small thatched hut with a tiny window. He walks into this hut, but my eyes are still focused on the beautiful liliies that are growing so peacefully in the small garden. "Are you coming?" He calls from inside the hut. I yell a "yeah sure" and hurry to meet him in the hut. Stepping into the hut, I don't know what I expected to see. Dragons? Maybe. Dinosaurs? Probably. A tiger? Maybe. But Butterflies?! Never in a million years. Considering his dark and cold demeanor, Damien does not look like someone who would rear not just one or two but many butterflies of different colors. I am in so much shock, my jaw is refusing to come back up. "B--butterflies?" I mutter in shock. I doubt he heard me, but the small smile on his face when I look at him proves to me that he did. The butterflies are flying around freely in a tall glass box that is situated in the middle of the hut. There are neon lights around the rims of the glass, serving as the only illumination in the dark hut. In one word it was sublime. The glass was segmented into two parts, the upper and lower. In those sections were flowers of different kinds, where the butterflies would fly around and perch on. "This is what I need you to take care of for me." His voice snaps me out of my momentary hypnosis. "This? How?" I look at him. "You could just throw a nectar pad in through the whole over there" He points to a push-in portion of the glass. "And the nectar?" I ask "Here." He walks over to a small drawer and pulls out a tray containing several colors of sponge-like nectar pads. "You made these yourself?" I ask "Yea. Its mostly by mixing honey and water. The color is used to attract them to the pad" He puts the tray back in the drawer and pushes it back closed. "I could get quite busy during the week so you just have to do it then. I'll take care of it during weekends" "Okay" A wide smile rises to my face. He looks at me and raises his brows in surprise. "Why are you grinning?" "I love butterflies" "Oh well, that's enough for tonight" He says this at the same time I heave out a yawn. My eyes were beginning to droop and that served as a reminder to both of us that it was way past midnight. "I've never been up this late" "You're a semi-human remember? You need some sleep" He says in a low voice. I chuckle at his description of me. Semi-human. "And you?" I ask. "Sometimes I wonder if your lack of intellectual content stems from the fact that you don't listen or if its a choice." He teases. "Hey! That is so mean" I whine. "Vampires don't sleep" "They don't?" My eyes are wide and my brows are raised because I did not know that. "Even a toddler would know that" He stands and heads for the door. I follow suit and when we are finally outside, he shuts the hut and locks it with a tiny padlock. As we walk back into the house, I raise my hands to stretch and as I do that, my eyes catch the sky. A surprised gasp escapes my lips at the myriad of stars in the sky. Back in the city, stars only appear once in a while and even when they do appear, they could be counted. "Oh my God" With my eyes stuck to the sky, I see a shooting star run accross it in a flash and a happy squeal escapes my lips. "Holy s**t I've never seen those before! Woah" I twirl on my feet with joy, uncontrollable butterflies beginning to swarm in my stomach. As a child, when my parents get at it with each other, I would block out their screams and yells with music and climb out my window to see the stars, it helped me calm my nerves. I begin to feel eyes on me, it feels like they are burning holes through the side of my head. The smile is immediately wiped off my face as I turn to see Damien standing there with his hands shoved in his pockets, staring keenly at me. I had gotten engrossed in the stars and forgot that he was there. I might have expressed myself too much. "Sorry" I murmur. I could not decipher his emotion because his face was blank. I was beginning to feel like, I annoyed him. "You should go to bed" he says, his voice no more than a whisper. He turns on his feet and heads into the house, leaving me behind to follow.
