Running through the trees, I noticed that Jackson was taking the long way to the truck. Which I appreciated because I needed time. Time to think about what the f**k I'd just done.
They clearly know we're not a normal wolf now.
No s**t, Ty.
Jackson, I'm sorry... I put us in an insane amount of danger just now.
You're fine. She's your mate. I was kinda expecting you to do something a little crazy.
She's OUR mate. Don't forget that. And yeah... but that was extreme even for me.
Especially for you.
Yeah, yeah...
Taking in a deep breath, I turned my attention off from where we were going for a minute and thought about her. Our mate. Pigeon.
She was beautiful. Freckles scattered across her nose and cheeks, her large eyes, so very different from each other and yet both so stunning. Even in low-quality color. Her dark hair, tied back, with a few strands escaping the ponytail to frame her face. She'd been biting her lip most of the time she was close to me, is it a nervous habit?
Whoever she was with, it was clear that they were close. Probably not dating though, the way she looked at him and talked to him- or rather signed to him wasn't how a couple acted. I'd guess best friends.
I growled, suddenly possessive over the girl I had just met. Jackson wasn't happy with it either, his emotions coursing through me.
I don't know, all I know is that I don't like him. Jackson spat, interrupting my internal chatter. Pushing us faster, Jax expertly dodged trees and jumped over thorny bushes, running straight through others.
Jax, I don't like it either, but it's not that dire. Why don't we meet her in my body before we get angry? I mean, if they are just best friends then it's not a big deal. I know she felt the mate connection. I could hear her heart racing, and her teeth chattered. You can't just ignore those signs of the chemicals being released...
How do we know she wasn't just nervous and cold?
We don't. That's why we're gonna meet her in my body first.
Jackson clenched our jaws, almost biting our tongue, and huffed.
Fine.
We were nearing the overhang that was used as a parking lot, and I stopped us as I noticed signs of recent foot traffic.
Only humans come this way...
Through the brambles, I could see two humans- one was the boy from the lake, and the other a girl. Bright red hair hid most of her face, but she was all wrapped around him, one arm around his neck and the other hidden from sight. He had her up on the edge of my truck bed. I glared but didn't dare to step out and reveal myself in Jackson's body.
Well, at least we know he and Pigeon aren't dating now.
He better not be!
She pulled away from him, and he leaned in to kiss her again, but she turned and he caught her cheek. Pushing him back a couple of steps, she got off my truck and fixed her own hair. "I can't believe you! That is someone else's truck!" she exclaimed between giggles. "It's not like you were objecting." replied the boy as he fiddled with the door handle of the passenger side on his car.
"Don't forget, we're going to that party tonight." the girl opened the door of his car and stood for a minute as he messed with the driver's side. "Yeah... But we aren't staying long. Remember, we're going to your parent's house tomorrow." Ducking into the car, she closed her door with a slam that made me jump.
Five minutes later they were out of sight.
Finally. I never thought they'd leave. Ready, Jax?
Yeah, I guess.
Taking a deep breath, I relaxed every muscle in our body and allowed the Change to take over us again.
Six and a quarter minutes later, I stood on my human legs and ran to the truck, fully aware of how naked I was. Fumbling, I reached inside the cabin and grabbed my clothes, which I'd set on the seat. Quickly, I pulled on my boxers and jeans, before taking a breath and pulling on my t-shirt.
At least now we won't be arrested for public nudity...
Reaching into the truck again, I snagged the keys and yanked them out of the ignition. Snaking my arm back out the open window, I unlocked my door and slid inside, closing my eyes and resting my forehead on the steering wheel for a minute.
Jax?
Yeah, Ty?
We met our mate today.
We did.
Goddess, I... Wow. We met our mate today!
I know.
I let out a giant sigh of relief that I hadn't known I'd been holding onto for the last four years. Pure elation flooded my body, and I laughed, lifting my head from the steering wheel and leaning back against the headrest.
Tyler, we've got to get going if you want to go to Donny's tonight?
I quickly started the truck and as it roared to life, I smirked thinking :
Had a change of heart, Jax?
Yeah yeah... whatever. Let's just go.
You're weird.
You love me.
I know.
Still smiling, I pulled off the overhang and onto the dirt road, actually excited to go to this party now.
Hopefully she'll be there.
