Chapter 1:The Paper That Ends Us
CHAPTER 1: The Paper That Ends Us Glenda's Pov The pen felt heavy in my hand like it weighed more than it should. I stared at the dotted line that would end everything between us. I did not hesitate because hesitation meant doubt. I had no doubt left in me anymore. "Glenda please just wait. Think about this for one more second" Damian said. His voice cracked in a way I had never heard before. It almost made me look up at him but I did not because looking at him would make this harder than it needed to be. I signed my name across the paper. The sound of the pen scratching against the document was the only sound in the entire office. When I finished I placed the pen down on the mahogany desk. I pushed the papers toward Mr Henderson who was our lawyer. He cleared his throat like he was uncomfortable with the tension in the room. "Mrs Scott are you certain about this decision" Mr Henderson asked. He adjusted his glasses. He looked at me with concern but I knew he was just doing his job, making sure I was not being forced into anything. "It is Ms Hushbarrow now. Yes I am certain" I said. My voice came out steady, cold. I was proud of myself for not breaking down in front of these men who thought I was weak. Damian stood up so fast that his chair scraped against the floor, making a horrible sound. He walked around the desk, trying to reach for my hand but I pulled away before he could touch me because his touch used to mean everything to me. Now it meant nothing but lies, betrayal. "Baby please do not do this to us" he said. His blue eyes were red, swollen like he had been crying but I did not care about his tears because I had cried enough tears for both of us over the past few weeks. "There is no us anymore Damian" I said. I stood up, grabbed my purse from the chair. I could feel my phone buzzing inside it. I knew exactly what it was because my phone had not stopped buzzing since that video leaked online. "It was one mistake Glenda just one night. I was drunk. I did not mean for any of this to happen" he said. He ran his hand through his black hair. He looked desperate, broken but I had been desperate, broken for five years while he did whatever he wanted. "One mistake" I repeated. I laughed but there was no humor in it. I turned to face him fully. I could see Mr Henderson pretending to organize papers so he did not have to watch us fall apart. "You think this is about one night Damian. You think I am stupid enough to believe that this was the only time you cheated on me." His face changed. He looked shocked like he did not expect me to know about the other times. I watched him try to come up with something to say but nothing came out of his mouth. "I knew about the others" I continued. My voice was getting louder now. I did not care if Mr Henderson heard everything because soon the whole world would know anyway. "I knew about the woman in London, the one you met at that conference in Miami. I stayed quiet because I thought you would change. I thought you loved me enough to stop." "Glenda I" he started but I cut him off because I was not done talking yet. "I gave up everything for you" I said. My hands were shaking now. I gripped my purse tighter to steady them. "I gave up school, my dreams, my future because you said you needed me. I believed you. I worked day and night to build your company, make you successful." "I am grateful for everything you did" he said. He took a step closer but I took a step back because I needed space between us. "Grateful" I said. The word tasted bitter in my mouth. "You are grateful. That is all you have to say to me after I gave up having children because you were impotent. You could not give me a family." The room went silent. I knew I had hit him where it hurt the most but he had hurt me in ways that would never heal so I did not feel bad about it. Mr Henderson coughed, stood up, collected the signed papers. He said something about filing them with the court within the next few days but I was not really listening because all I could think about was getting out of this office, away from Damian. "I will fix this Glenda I promise I will do whatever it takes to make this right" Damian said. He grabbed my arm before I could walk to the door. His grip was tight but not painful. I looked down at his hand on my arm, then up at his face. I saw the man I used to love, the man who destroyed me. I felt nothing but emptiness. "There is nothing left to fix Damian" I said. I pulled my arm free, walked to the door, opened it. The cold air from the hallway hit my face, felt like freedom. "Please Glenda please do not leave me" he called out behind me but I did not turn around because turning around meant weakness. I was done being weak. I walked down the long hallway. My heels clicked against the marble floor. I could hear him calling my name but I kept walking until I reached the elevator, pressed the button, waited. The elevator doors opened. I stepped inside, pressed the button for the ground floor. Just as the doors started to close Damian appeared, tried to stop them but they closed in his face. I was alone. I leaned against the cold metal wall, let out a breath I did not know I was holding. I pulled out my phone to check the time but instead I saw fifty three notifications on my screen. My stomach dropped. I opened my phone. The first thing I saw was a news article with a headline that made me want to throw up. "Damian Scott s*x Tape Goes Viral Again After Mystery Source Releases Extended Version" I clicked on the article, skimmed through it. My hands were shaking so hard I almost dropped my phone.
