The arrival
The morning sunlight filtered through the thin curtains of Rosewood High’s library painting long stripes of gold across the floor It was the first week of a new term but the building already buzzed with chatter footsteps and the squeak of sneakers on polished tiles Students hurried from class to class clutching notebooks and half-finished assignments but one person walked with a pace that suggested the start of her day was more complicated than everyone else’s. Amara Cole clutched her backpack strap with one hand and the school map with the other Her family had moved to Rosewood barely a week ago, and although she had practiced the route a dozen times the school still felt like a maze Every hallway looked the same every doorway seemed to lead somewhere unexpected and every classroom number felt out of order. She had hoped blending into a new environment would be easy Instead she felt as if she were wearing a sign that read new girl She paused at the corner of the hallway, checking the map again Room 2B science wing second floor but this is already the second floor, right?” she murmured, turning the paper in every direction Lost? The voice came from her left gentle calm and slightly amused Amara glanced up and found a boy leaning against a set of lockers a textbook tucked under his arm. He had dark curly hair that fell loosely over his forehead and a relaxed posture that gave off a quiet confidence His uniform was the same as everyone else’s but somehow it looked like he had not tried too hard to put it together yet still managed to get it right Amara straightened A little Maybe a lot He stepped closer, not too close but enough to glance at her map 2B You’re on the wrong side of the school. This is the humanities wing. Science wing is the long hallway past the courtyard Oh she said exhaling a breath she didn’t realize she’d been holding I must have taken the left staircase instead of the right He nodded Easy mistake The whole school is set up like someone designed it on a Friday and did not check their work Despite her nerves, she laughed. It was not a loud laugh more like a small, grateful one but it loosened her shoulders. I am Elijah he said simply Amara Welcome to Rosewood Amara. Need me to walk you to 2B I am heading that way She hesitated If it’s not a bother It’s not They started walking the hallway noise rising around them. Amara noticed the way people greeted Elijah small nods waves friendly smiles. He seemed to know a lot of people, yet he wasn’t loud or flashy. Instead, he carried himself like someone who didn’t need attention but received it anyway. So new town he asked as they passed the courtyard windows Yeah My mom got a transfer at work. We moved from Brixton two weeks ago. Big change She nodded Bigger than I expected. I feel like everyone already knows each other. And I am just trying not to walk into the wrong classroom You will figure it out Everyone’s new somewhere, sometime His tone was not overly encouraging, but it was sincere, and for some reason, that sincerity mattered more When they reached the science wing Amara slowedI think this is it Elijah pointed down the corridor Second door on the right Thank you she said, shifting her backpack Really. You saved me from being extremely late It happens And if you ever get lost again, I am usually in the library during lunch. It’s quiet there A small smile tugged at her lips Good to know He gave a polite wave and walked off leaving her standing in front of Room 2B with a feeling she could not quite name. It was not excitement or fear maybe something in between mixed with the relief of having survived her first major challenge of the day Inside, the classroom buzzed with students preparing for the period Amara spotted an empty desk near the window and slipped into it As she unpacked her notebook, she replayed the encounter in her mind. It had been ordinary in one sense two students meeting in a hallway but something about it felt like the start of a new chapter not just in school, but in her life When the teacher entered and began the lesson Amara tried to focus but her thoughts drifted again Would she see Elijah later Would he remember offering help She shook the thoughts away gently She did not want to jump ahead or assume anything Still the idea of having even one familiar face in a school full of strangers made everything feel lighter After class she stepped into the hallway which had become even louder between periods Students rushed past but Amara took a moment to stand still and observe. The school did not feel as overwhelming now The map in her hand seemed less like a lifeline and more like a simple guide she could handle As she moved toward her next class, she noticed Elijah again this time talking with a friend near the stairwell He did not look her way immediately but when he did, he gave a small nod of recognition A simple gesture, yet it warmed her more than she expected. Amara continued on her way, feeling steadier than she had that morning Maybe Rosewood would not be so bad. Maybe being the new girl was not the worst thing. And maybe though she was not ready to say it out loud the day she got lost in the hallway would be the moment she looked back on someday as the beginning of something important
