CHAPTER 1: THE QUEEN HE STOLE
The party was a glittering cage of silk, champagne, and false smiles. Crystal chandeliers spilled golden light across the marble ballroom of the Moretti estate, where the city’s most powerful families gathered under the thin disguise of celebration.
Laughter rose and fell like waves. Soft classical music drifted through the room. No one spoke of the blood that usually stained these men’s hands. Tonight, they pretended to be civilized.
Damiano Ricci did not pretend.
He stood near the tall windows with a glass of untouched whiskey in his hand. His black suit stood out like a dark shadow moving through the crowd. At thirty-four, he already ruled the eastern half of the city with calm, deadly precision.
Men feared his silence more than most feared gunfire. He rarely attended these gatherings, he preferred the shadows. But tonight, something had pulled him here.
Then he saw her.
She stood alone near the wall with a glass of red wine held loosely in her fingers. Dark hair fell in soft waves past her shoulders. Her dress was simple—deep emerald silk that hugged her body without trying too hard. No diamonds, no heavy jewelry, just a thin gold chain resting against her collarbone.
She looked out of place among the perfectly styled faces and loud voices, as if she had wandered into the wrong world and was already planning her exit.
Damiano’s fingers tightened around the glass.
He had never seen her before. A face like hers was not one he would forget.
She turned slightly, and their eyes met across the room. For a single second, the noise of the party faded. Her gaze was steady, curious, unafraid. Not the usual careful glance people gave him. Something inside Damiano, something cold and tightly controlled, shifted.
He set the glass down without looking away and a moment later he was moving through the crowd. People parted for him without being asked. Conversations died as he passed. He stopped a few feet from her.
“You don’t belong here,” he said, in a low voice.
Elena raised one eyebrow. “Neither do you, from the way people are staring.
A faint smile tugged at the corner of his lips. "Your name.”
She hesitated, then answered, “Elena.”
“Just Elena?” he asked
Damiano studied her face. There was fire under her calmness and he could already feel it. “I’m Damiano Ricci.”
Recognition flickered in her eyes but she didn't flinch. That alone made her different from everyone else in the room.
“I’ve heard the name,” she said calmly.
“Most people have.” He tilted his head. “Who are you here with tonight"
“No one important enough for you to know and I was already on my way out.”
“No,” he said simply. “You’re not.”
Elena’s fingers tightened on the stem of her glass. “Excuse me?”
Damiano stepped closer and the scent of her, something clean and soft, reached him. “You’re coming with me.”
She laughed once, unable to believe his words. “I don’t think so.”
His voice was quiet, but his meaning was clear. “It wasn’t a request.”
For a moment she stared at him, searching for the joke. When she found none, her expression hardened. “You can’t just decide to take me with you"
“I already have.”
Before she could answer, he took the glass from her hand and set it on a nearby table. Their hands touched for only a second, but the moment felt charged. Elena withdrew immediately. “I’m leaving,” she said, turning away.
Damiano’s hand closed gently but firmly around her wrist. Not painful but unbreakable.
“Walk with me,” he said. “Quietly. If you make a scene, it will only make things more difficult for you in this room.”
She looked at his hand, then up at his face. Something in his eyes told her he was not bluffing. After a long second, she gave a single, stiff nod.
They walked out of the ballroom together. No one stopped them. No one dared.
Outside, the night air was cool. A black car waited at the bottom of the steps with engine running. Damiano opened the rear door but Elena hesitated on the last step.
“Where are you taking me?”
“Home,” he answered.
“Your home?”
“Yes.”
She could have screamed, she could have run, but she didn't dare, instead she slid into the car with a straight composure. Damiano followed behind, shutting the door as the car pulled away from the estate without a word from the driver.
A heavy silence settled between them, streetlights slid across Elena’s face as the car moved through the night. She stared outside the window, refusing to look at him.
“You’re making a mistake,” she said finally.
“No,” Damiano replied. “I’m correcting one. You should never have been at that party.”
“And now what, I’m your prisoner?”
He turned his head, the dim light only made his stare more powerful. “You’re mine.”
Elena’s eyes widened, but she forced her voice to stay steady. “You can’t own people.”
“Yes I can darling.”
The rest of the drive passed in silence. When the car finally slowed, tall iron gates opened onto a long driveway. The villa stood ahead, beautiful and grand, with soft lights shining through the windows.
Damiano stepped out first and offered his hand but Elena ignored it and climbed out alone. He did not seem offended and simply walked beside her up the wide steps and into the entrance hall as the doors closed behind them with a heavy sound.
Elena turned to face him with arms crossed. “So what now? You lock me in a room and throw away the key?”
He took a moment to read her expression. The anger in her eyes only intensified his interest in her.
“You’ll have a room,” he said. “You’ll have clothes, food, anything you need. But you will not leave here without me or without my consent. Not until I say otherwise.”
“And if I refuse?”
He stepped closer until only inches separated them. His voice dropped in a soft and dangerous tone
"Then I'll remind you who calls the shots."
Elena’s pulse raced, but she refused to look away. “You can’t keep me forever.”
Damiano’s gaze moved over her face, slow and possessive, as if he was tracing every feature with his eyes
“I don’t need forever,” he said. “I only need time, and I have all the time in the world.”
He pointed toward the grand staircase. “Your room is upstairs. Second door on the left. Someone will bring you clothes.”
Elena hesitated, then walked past him without another word. Her footsteps echoed on the marble as she climbed the stairs. At the top she paused and looked back once.
Damiano was still standing in the hall, watching her like a man who had just claimed something he had no intention of ever releasing.
She turned and disappeared down the hallway, only then did he release the breath he had been holding. The queen he had stolen was already within his walls and he had no plans of ever letting her go.
