“because those are the colors of your eyes. Honey brown and grey. That’s what I think it’s going to be.” I tell him again. All smiles.
“okay. What color do you think I am going to be?” I ask him.
“i think you might just defile the odds and be a white wolf.” he says looking at my hair.
“well, we both know that’s never going to happen.” I say.
“what do you mean by that? How can you say it is never going to happen?” he says.
“you know what the oracle sad. I am never going to fully shift into my wolf. My wolf is dormant and docile. She is not strong enough to break through the barrier of what separates the beast from the human.” I tell him.
“i know what the priest said I also know that he doesn’t know what he is saying or at least it cannot be entirely true. Remember last spring when he predicted snow and it rained all week?? how about that?” he says.
That makes me roll my eyes and smile. Sometimes I wonder why I put up with his goofy ass.
“okay I get your point but they are not the same things. That was the weather and this is deeper and more spiritual stuff. I am different. Look at me. My eyes are blue… I am the only one in the pack with blue eyes and white hair. Even the old ones among us don’t have white hair and we know the white hair is the curse of the gods.” I tell him.
“curse or no curse it is time you stop letting the predictions of other ruin your life or dictate stuffs. Look at you, you are beautiful...” he says. My face burns hot with the fierce blush that overcomes me.
“and you’re brave.. “ he says again and I blush even deeper from the top of my head to my neck is red with heat.
“so take a good look around, the whole pack can’t stand you because no matter what they do or say you come back harder, you stand taller and you don’t let them break you. That takes someone that is brave to wake up each morning and brave the world that condemns their existence.” he says.
I look at him and my heart nearly bursts open out of love and gratitude for his kind words.
I scoot closer to him and grab his hand in mine. Pressing my lips against his warm cheek and feeling his pulse from my hold on his hand, our pulse now start to beat in sync.
He looks back at me and smiles. A see a red hue creep up his face to his neck.
“thank you Jeremy.” I tell him softly.
“no, you don’t have to thank me.” he shakes his head.
“oh please stop being so humble and accept the goddamn thanks.” I growl playfully at him.
“yes ma’am.” he says as he smiles.
“yeah.” I smile and lean my head on his shoulder.
“tell me, how does it feel being the new captain of the football team?” I ask him.
“how do you know about that?” he asks in surprise.
“you know me...” I lift my chin up dramatically.
“okayyy… I don’t.” he says deadpan.
“yeah, so, I was walking bye Mr Landon in the hallway and I overheard him talking to principal. He said he has picked you out to the be the next captain.” I tell him.
“how come you didn’t tell me?’ I ask him.
“that’s because I didn’t know about it till this morning. He called me into the office and told me about and asked me if I was up for the task and if I could cope with the extra work and the training we have been taking. I told him I’ll think about it. I have not yet accepted.” he says.
“well, do you want to take it?” I ask softly.
