CHAPTER 5 - MARRIAGE CONTRACT KIMBERLY’S POV Kimberly stared at the stapled papers in her hand. "What in the world is this? A marriage contract?" Is he getting married? Why do I even have the file with me? She couldn't believe she was jealous of who he was about to get married to. She wondered why her heart was burning. "This is ridiculous." She muttered. "Be still, my heart." What will happen with JJ now? Curiosity to check the contract out gripped her. She searched for the bride's name. Party A: Jamie Harris. Party B: Kimberly Orton. What?! Is this a joke? Then she checked out the ridiculous amount of money he was going to pay her monthly for the duration of five years. Five years! "What is this nonsense?" She thought of taking a picture of it when she saw the NDA form there. "What is going on here?" She asked herself. She decided she would wait till he returned. He didn't take long at all. "You are still here." He said when he arrived. "I was hoping to meet you here." "What is this?" Kimberly went straight to the point. "Is this how you ask for help?" "Kimberly, calm down, okay? Just sit first." Now, he is calling me by first name? Kimberly glared at the seat instead. "Sit, Kimberly." She obliged. "Working in Kit Tech is for experience, and I want to show my family how many things I can do , how I can manage to survive on my own without a dime from them." Oh, well, this means something to him. "I don't know what I'm supposed to do with that information. I don't have parents, but I have two sisters and... friends." She trailed off. "I need you to help retain my post as the CEO, and you will be able to talk to your family and help them vastly without much struggle." Kimberly needed the money. Vanessa was at the hospital, bedridden with cancer. Derrick helped, and with a number of donations, she had managed to stay atop Cancer every day. JJ loved his aunt, but he wasn't allowed to see her. "But five years?" Kimberly asked. Are you seriously considering this? "But where will you put JJ? This is a good opportunity to bring JJ up." She muttered under her breath. "Yes. I have two years left for me to return to my father's company, and for those three years, you can do what you want; I just don't want my parents to ask me about marriage every time." He has a point. I don't have parents to do that for me, but Vanessa... "I have something to tell you." Kimberly began. He looked curious, and gave an approval nod. "Go on." Kimberly opened her mouth and closed it. She glanced around and twisted her hand. But no words would come out of her throat. "Can I think about it?" "Till when?" he asked. "Around next week or so." She replied He smiled. "Next week will be too late. I will get your reply this evening." He walked to his seat and began to remove his suit. He sat in his chair. Kimberly stood still, staring at his movements. "Are you through auditing?" Have you made duplicate papers for the keeps?" Jamie asked. That shook Kimberly out from the reverie she had fallen into. "No, I haven't, Mr. Harris." "Well, then get to work, and the duplicate should be printed in secret, okay? No one should see it," he said. "Of course, sir." Kimberly endured the day without bursting. She decided that she was going to her friend Lola about it. NDA or not. All she had to do was not react like she knew. After Kimberly had said 'hi' to her son, she dragged her friend to one of their guest rooms while JJ continued his art lessons with his uncle Derrick. She threw the folder on the table. "He asked me to marry him." "What?" Lola screeched and jumped out of her chair. "You told him?" "Of course not! Shut up and sit down." Lola did as she was told. "The board members of Kit Technologies want him to get married; his parents too." "So, how did you come in?" Lola asked. "Honestly, I don't know. He said there was some conspiracy going on at work; he is working hard to unravel that. Frankly, he was a workaholic and a rich spoilt brat who knew his stuff." "Don't do this. Especially since you have decided to hide a secret for him." "But I need the money. Vanessa, and no one says I can't enjoy a little luxury in my life." Kimberly said. "So, are you going to hide JJ here? Forever?" Lola asked. Kimberly laughed. "You know I can't hide my son; he will eventually get to know." "Then how do you want to go about it?" "I include a few phrases and terms of my own; we both agree, and we move on with our lives." Kimberly was feeling proud that she thought up something like that. "Is it always that easy?" Kimberly could tell Lola was worried about her. "Don't worry, babe. Just wait and see, okay?" Lola nodded. "I went to the doctor today." Kimberly felt like the terrible person—she was—jumping to her feet. Lola's doctor's appointment was that day, but she had been so preoccupied she forgot, and then she came with her own problem instead of asking her how her day went. "So, what happens now?" Kimberly asked. "Nothing. I've been put on another medication." Kimberly closed the distance between them and hugged her friend tightly. "I'm sorry. It's going to be fine, okay?" Kimberly rubbed her friend's back. "No, it's not. Derrick loves children; what's happening to me? Why can't I give him what he wants best to repay all his love for me?" "He loves you like that, Lo, and he is going to wait with you. The baby will be your little miracle." "I'm going for another IVF." Lola declared, determination in her voice. Kimberly didn't think twice when she said a definite 'No!' Lola had gone through a lot of heartbreaks because of IVF, and Kimberly wasn't going to let her go through it again.
