CHAPTER 4 - RUDE SHOCK
JAMIE’S POV
Jamie walked into the boardroom on the second day of his resumption to see different expressions on different faces.
He already knew some of them had different opinions about him, especially since the son of the chairman of the company was part of the people who applied to be the CEO. He was declined.
The same chairman's son and all their other competitors were all sitting amidst them.
What is this? This is not a board meeting?
"Mr Harris. Good of you to join us." Mr. Bennett said.
"Did I miss the time? Because here it says 2pm." Jamie said before he lowered himself to his seat.
"Oh, it must have been a mistake. It's actually 12 pm. You know 12 pm and 2 pm are not that far in pronunciation."
It was not a mistake, especially since all my competitors were also staring at me, they are trying to gang up on me.
"You have been called here to inform you of the new requirement to retain your position."
"To retain my position? What do you mean?" Jamie was genuinely confused.
He saw the conspiracy when the chairman's son and the man on his right side smirked at him.
Great!
"You have to be married, or at least get married before two weeks." Another man, Mr. Zilch, said. He had his own company, but he bought a substantial amount of share in their company.
Jamie wondered why he was willing to play wild cards with his shares.
Jamie laughed. "Why does marriage have to be the requirement? Is the chairman aware of this? Does being married show how competent you are?"
"Well," Mr. Zilch began. "If you are married, you will know what responsibility means, and to carry a lot of people, some of them who also have responsibilities and their differences mean you have to at least understand your wife first."
What is he talking about?
"If you don't get married in two weeks, I will be happy to throw your things out. I will see how you will manage that."
****
A week later,
There was relative silence in the room; only flipping of papers and clicking of the mouse's sound could be heard.
Jamie sat at his desk working on catching up with the company's work pace meticulously; he might have in fact added more pace.
Kimberly, on the other hand, was checking the insufficient work the marketing department of the company was putting in.
She shook her head as she looked on.
"You see what I mean now? I'm going to be letting go of a lot of people in this company, some, however, are going to cool their heads in the prison."
Kimberly didn't argue; she only replied with a subtle nod of her head.
"I'm speechless, Mr. Harris." Kimberly replied.
Of course, she was speechless. The only reason she was sitting in front of me was because I have investigated her and I've found her relatively innocent.
Jamie's phone rang. "Mother."
"Where are you? You've been keeping me waiting!"
"I'm still at work. I didn't want to go there and start waiting for you. You say you are always fashionably late."
"Not this time. Come now." His mother replied and hung up on him.
He stood up, grabbing his suit. To Kimberly he said,
"This department is going to be reporting directly to you, henceforth, and you will tell me what you think before I go through them. You have the power to reject terrible projects too."
He walked around his desk towards her.
"Oh, I..." Kimberly began, but Jamie could already see the doubt in her eyes.
"What? You can't do it?" He walked closer to her.
"I mean..." She tried again.
"Kimberly, one thing you should know about working with me is that you will have to test your boundaries. You will do this, and you will do it well."
"Yes, Mr. Harris." She replied.
"Good. I'm going out to lunch for a bit; I want you to have finished documenting the first exhibit by the time I return."
He walked to the door first before he could gather the courage. He walked back to his desk and dropped a folder on the coffee table in front of Kimberly.
"I need your help; check this out and let me know what you think. I'm ready to change your mind, if the need be."
He turned on his heel and left the confused woman peeking at the folder behind.
Yes, I ran away!
"Why didn't I ask her to her face? I had to leave the contract and rushed away like fire was on my heel." Jamie muttered to himself in embarrassment as his driver drove them to the hotel.
He walked into the luxury hotel food court, asking for a reservation under the name Charlotte Harris. He was directed to the table.
"I'm sorry, I think you are mistaken. The seat is occupied." He said to the hostess.
"Oh, no, no. She is here under the same reservation, Mr. Harris." The hostess replied.
"What?" Jamie frowned and approached the woman.
"Hi, my name is Candy Lucas; you must be Jamie Harris." She said with a broad smile; she stretched her hand to shake his.
Who names their child Candy?
Jamie cringed when he saw that her red lipstick had stained her teeth. He shook her hands firmly and noted that he didn't have a strong grip.
"I'm Jamie Harris. I'm confused. I'm supposed to be meeting my mother right about now."
"No, you are supposed to meet me here. It's a blind date set up by our mothers," Candy said.
Jamie couldn't believe she could smile even wider, but she did. It looked fake.
"I see. Well then, please order anything you want and put it on my tab. I made time to come here, swamped with work." Jamie said as he walked back the way he came.
"What?" Her face scrunched up in humiliation and anger. "How can you do this to me? You didn't even sit!"
"Oh, and you should also know that I'm engaged and I will be married within the week."
Which you are not very sure of
But getting married could put an end to all his trouble, especially if it's to a woman he could see himself falling in love with.
