### **Chapter 3: Into Aetheria** The monstrous wolf-like creature, a *Shadow Hound*, lunges toward them with a snarl, its red eyes blazing. Eira releases an arrow, striking the creature in its shoulder, but it barely slows down. Kai, feeling utterly helpless, watches as the beast closes in. Suddenly, a strange sensation pulses through his body — a rush of warmth surging from deep within him. His heart pounds in his chest, and he feels a tingling in his fingertips, almost like electricity crackling beneath his skin. Without understanding how or why, Kai instinctively raises his hands. To his shock, a gust of wind bursts forth, slamming into the creature and sending it tumbling backward. Kai stares at his hands, bewildered and frightened by what he just did. Eira looks at him with a mixture of surprise and suspicion but doesn’t have time to question him as the Shadow Hound quickly recovers and prepares to attack again. Eira shouts for Kai to stay behind her, and with impressive agility, she draws two more arrows, releasing them in rapid succession. This time, her aim is true — the arrows pierce the creature’s heart, and it collapses with a final, pained howl before dissolving into a dark mist that fades away into the forest. Eira turns to Kai, her expression a mix of concern and curiosity. “What was that?” she demands, eyeing him cautiously. Kai is equally baffled. “I… I don’t know. I just felt something inside me, and it happened,” he replies, still trying to process what he just did. Eira seems unconvinced but realizes this is not the time or place to press further. “We need to get out of here,” she says, more urgently. “The presence of a Shadow Hound means there could be more nearby. These creatures are not supposed to roam this close to the village.” They make their way through the forest more quickly now, Eira leading the way with her bow drawn, her senses alert for any signs of danger. Kai follows closely, his mind racing with questions. How did he manage to summon that wind? Is this some kind of magic? And if so, what does it mean for him? After what feels like an eternity, they finally emerge from the dense forest into a small clearing. Before them lies the village of *Elmyr*, a quaint settlement with thatched-roof cottages, winding dirt paths, and villagers bustling about. The village is surrounded by a wooden palisade, and Kai can see fields of crops and grazing livestock in the distance. The villagers stop and stare as Eira and Kai approach, their expressions wary and curious. Kai feels their eyes on him and realizes just how out of place he looks in his modern clothes. Eira leads him to the center of the village, where an elderly man with a long white beard and a staff waits. This is *Elder Thorne*, the leader of Elmyr and a respected figure among the villagers. Eira quickly explains what happened in the forest, including the strange magic Kai seemed to wield. The elder listens intently, his eyes narrowing with intrigue. Elder Thorne approaches Kai, his gaze piercing but not unkind. “You are not from Aetheria, are you?” he asks. Kai hesitates but then admits that he doesn’t know how he got here or even where “here” is. The elder nods thoughtfully. “There have been rumors,” he murmurs, “of a prophecy that speaks of a Wanderer from another realm who would arrive in Aetheria… someone with great potential, but whose purpose is uncertain.” Kai feels a chill run down his spine. The prophecy — just like the old man in the bookstore had hinted. The elder continues, “You may have a role to play in the events to come, young man. But whether you are a blessing or a curse to our world remains to be seen.” Unsure of what to think, Kai agrees to stay in the village for a while to learn more about this world and his newfound abilities. Elder Thorne advises Kai to seek out *Maelis*, a powerful mage in the capital city who may have answers about his magic and why he was brought to Aetheria. As the villagers return to their daily routines, Eira offers to help Kai find Maelis, sensing that his arrival might be more significant than anyone realizes. Kai reluctantly agrees, knowing he needs allies in this strange new world. For the first time, he feels a spark of excitement amidst his fear. Kai is no longer just an ordinary college student; he is now a stranger in a magical land, with powers he doesn’t understand and a destiny that could change Aetheria forever.
