### **Chapter 4: Discovering New Powers**
The next morning, Kai awakens in a small, rustic guest room in the village of Elmyr. The events of the previous day still swirl in his mind — the mysterious portal, the strange new world, the encounter with Eira, and the frightening discovery of his powers. He sits up, feeling both nervous and excited. If he truly has magic within him, he needs to learn how to control it.
Eira arrives at his door with a serious expression. "If we're going to figure out what's going on with you, we need to leave for the capital today," she says. "But before that, you should try to get a handle on whatever it is you did in the forest. We can't have you accidentally blowing up trees on the way there." Kai laughs nervously, realizing she’s only half-joking.
Eira takes him to a clearing just outside the village, a place used by hunters to practice their skills. She sets up some makeshift targets — wooden logs and straw dummies — and steps back. "Okay, show me what you did yesterday," she instructs, crossing her arms.
Kai focuses, trying to remember the feeling from the day before, the rush of energy he felt in his chest and the tingling in his fingers. He takes a deep breath, raises his hands, and tries to imagine the same gust of wind he conjured before. At first, nothing happens, and he feels a bit foolish.
Eira watches with a critical eye. "Stop overthinking," she says. "Magic here isn't just about thinking; it's about feeling. It's a part of you. Trust it."
Taking her advice, Kai closes his eyes and lets himself relax. He thinks about the feeling of the wind, how it moves, how it flows around objects. Suddenly, he feels that same warmth inside him again, and this time, when he opens his eyes, a small but distinct breeze swirls around his hands. Encouraged, he pushes harder, and the breeze grows stronger until it turns into a powerful gust that knocks over a few of the dummies.
Kai’s face lights up with a mix of relief and excitement. “I did it!” he exclaims, but his celebration is short-lived. The gust suddenly intensifies beyond his control, sending dirt, leaves, and debris flying wildly around the clearing. Eira yells at him to stop, but Kai panics, unable to reign in the energy. The wind grows into a small whirlwind, and the logs and dummies are thrown into the air.
Realizing he has no control, Kai feels the energy inside him shift unpredictably, and then a burst of heat flares from his hands. A jet of fire shoots out, setting a nearby tree ablaze. Kai stumbles back, terrified. Eira quickly moves into action, drawing water from a nearby stream using her own elemental affinity and dousing the flames.
Once the fire is out, Eira turns to Kai, a mix of concern and amazement in her eyes. “You’re not just an elemental mage,” she says, stunned. “You can wield more than one element… That’s rare, incredibly rare.”
Kai is shaken, his confidence rattled. “I don’t know what I’m doing,” he admits, panting. “I didn’t even know magic existed until yesterday!”
Eira puts a reassuring hand on his shoulder. “It’s okay. That’s why we need to see Maelis. If anyone can help you figure this out, it’s her. She’s one of the most knowledgeable mages in Aetheria.”
As they prepare to leave for the capital, Eira explains that most elemental mages in Aetheria can only control one element — earth, water, fire, or air. The fact that Kai has demonstrated control over both wind and fire suggests he might be something far more powerful and dangerous. She warns him to be careful; if others learn of his abilities, they may see him as a threat.
Before they depart, Elder Thorne gives Kai a small charm, a necklace with a glowing blue crystal. He explains that it will help focus his magic and protect him from external magical influences. "This journey will test you," the elder says solemnly. "But remember, your power is a gift. How you choose to use it will define your fate."
Feeling a mix of fear and determination, Kai joins Eira as they set off down the winding path that leads to the capital city of *Valaris*. He knows he has a lot to learn, but for the first time, he feels a sense of purpose. With Eira by his side, he steps forward, ready to face whatever challenges lie ahead in this strange new world.
Unbeknownst to Kai, however, shadows begin to stir in the distance, watching his every move. News of his arrival and his unique abilities is spreading quickly — and not just to those who wish to help him.
