The 'man' entrusted with the task of attempting to determine the source of the strain of haemorrhagic fever, as recommended by Giles Pearce, was in fact a woman. Doctor Lauren Baker was not only one the world's foremost experts on tropical diseases, but the American happened to be in the UK at the moment, conducting a lecture tour of the major university hospitals and research labs in the UK.
