CHAPTER 1
Eva Thorne's POV Early morning's thick fog enveloped Silver Hollow in an enigmatic cloak. I inhaled deeply, relishing the earthy aroma of dew-kissed leaves, then left my little hut. The town was still asleep, and the calm provided was rare before the daily grind demanded. Silver Hollow was a site where the old world of werewolf customs coexisted peacefully with the modern day. Towering over cobblestone lanes, ancient trees appeared to speak the past on the breeze. Here was a particular place for my family—the Throne line. Being a great herbalist and healer, I had inherited the knowledge of many generations; the people loved my kindness and wisdom. I headed toward the brink of the woodland, where under my care a secret garden flourished. Every plant had a purpose and harbored hidden ability just waiting to be released. My mind drifted to Ryan Blackwood, the Alpha of the Blackwood Pack, as I cared for my herbs. We had a strong bond, but there was an unsaid barrier between us. Marcus, Ryan's father, was a powerful guy who constantly plotted and manipulated to increase his might. The gentle rustle of leaves cut off my thoughts. I turned to see Ryan standing on the brink of the garden, his sharp blue eyes ablaze with a force that always seemed to speed my pulse. His dark hair was messy, and the morning light created shadows across his sculpted face. Something in his eyes suggested unspoken words and secret strife. "Eva," he said, his voice a low rumbling that made me shudder. "We should have a conversation." My heart hammering in my chest, I nodded. We moved silently together, the weight of his presence both consoling and unnerving. Ryan turned to face me as we arrived at a remote clearing, his countenance dubious. " Marcus is pressing me again," he said, clearly annoyed. "He wants me to validate a partnership with Selena Crowe." The name set out a flash of resentment in me. Daughter of a competing pack leader, Selena Crowe was clever but also merciless. My fury boiled at the thought of Ryan being hooked to her for geopolitical considerations. 'What about us?' My voice just above a whisper, I asked. Ryan's mouth tightened as he stepped forward, his fingers extending to sweep a hair strand from my cheek. "I don't want to lose Eva. Marcus, nevertheless, would not accept no as an option." A great rustling in the bushes scared us before I could reply. Ryan sensed protection and positioned himself between me and the possible hazard. A moment later, Lila, my younger sister, came out of the shadows looking both excited and terrified. Eva! Ryan!! You have to arrive fast. She insisted, her voice shaking, that something had happened at the town square. We looked worriedly at one other and trailed Lila, our steps accelerating toward the center of Silver Hollow. Tension was high on the town plaza, the usually calm space now teeming with nervous murmurs and terrified looks. Marcus Blackwood, with his dominating presence demanding attention, was at the center of the disturbance. Selena Crowe, with her cold beauty emanating a deadly appeal, stood next to him. But the sight of a dead body laying on the ground chilled me down from the bottom. Lila said, "It's Peter," her voice almost audible above the crowd's whispers. This morning he was discovered dead. One of the most devoted Blackwood Pack members, Peter was a Beta who had always been mercilessly protective of Ryan. His death was a terrible blow with terrible ramifications. Marcus moved forward, his voice ringing across the assembly. "We will learn who is accountable for this horrible deed. No stone will not be turned over. Ryan and I looked knowingly as the throng scattered. Peter's passing was no haphazard act of violence. Before more lives were lost, we had to find the truth since something considerably darker was under influence. Later that evening, seated in my cottage, the events of the day kept playing back in my head. The door cracked open, Ryan tensely crept in. His voice almost above a whisper, he added, "We need to talk." Knowing that whatever he said would transform everything, I nodded. "Peter's death wasn't an accident," Ryan said, staring fiercely. "I found this." He gave me a little, well crafted talisman with symbols of evil magic on its surface. I muttered, realizing the marks, "This is Crowe's work." Still, "but why would she kill Peter?" Ryan's teeth locked. "To make our pack less strong. To compel me into the alliance. and to transmit a message. My head whirled, trying to fit the jumble. Should Selena be ready to turn to murder, it is impossible to know what else she might do. Our opponent was a strong one that would stop at nothing to reach her objectives. "We need to be careful," I added, speaking deliberately. And we have to figure out how to safeguard our pack. Ryan nodded, his hand out to grab mine. "We will tackle this, Eva, together. Anywhere. Tension in Silver Hollow mounted throughout the next few days. The community suffered strange events: crops withering, animals vanished, and the air seemed infused with a sinister energy. Selena's influence was obviously spreading, and her strength was developing under Marcus's direction. One evening I was making a batch of healing potions when a loud tap on the door startled me. When I opened it, Selena was standing there staring coldly and deliberately. "Eva, we have to talk," she murmured, her voice laden with fake kindness. I moved aside letting her in. Her presence seemed to thicken the air, and I could sense terrible energy emanating from her. "I know you and Ryan are close," Selena said, her voice somewhat laid back. "But right now he belongs to me. Our partnership is unavoidable." I tightened my hands, fury seething inside me. "Ryan isn't a pawn you could exploit, Selena. He owns his own mind. Selena had a cold smile. " Eva, you undervalue the influence's strength. You also undervalue me." She turned to go, and I saw a flash. A pendant matching Ryan's talisman discovered next to Peter's body hung around her neck. She obviously participated in the bad magic afflicting our community with great frequency. Driven to find the truth, I started looking over Selena's background looking for any evidence of her betrayal. My search led me to an old, deserted library on Silver Hollow's fringes, where forbidden knowledge and ancient books were stashed. One evening, I was reading over a particularly old time when a noise startled me. I raised my head to see Ryan coming out of the shadows, his countenance a mixture of fear and will. "I had to find you," he continued, speaking quickly. "Selena has a major project underway. Our time is limited. We put the bits of data we had acquired together. Selena wanted to carry out a dark ceremony binding Ryan to her permanently, therefore confirming her authority and control over both packs. We have to stop her, I said, my voice firm. "We cannot let her succeed." Ryan nodded, his hand around me. "We will tackle this, Eva, together. Anyhow. The strain in Silver Hollow peaked as the night of the ceremony drew near. Knowing that our lives—as well as the destiny of our packs—hovered on the brink, Ryan and I got ready for the encounter. As we headed to the area where the ceremony was scheduled, the full moon gave the town a terrible glare. At the middle Selena stood, her fans flocked around her. Marcus was also there, his face one of twisted delight. Selena snipped as we walked, "You're too late." " The ritual has already started." But we weren't alone either. Led by Lila and other Blackwood Pack members, the town had come together for our cause. There was a great struggle in which the air smelled of snarls and fights. I confronted Selena in the turmoil, our powers fighting in a flash of intensity. Though her dark magic was strong, I found strength in the link I had with Ryan and in the will to guard our house. I broke Selena's pendant with a last power surge, therefore releasing her hold on the black magic. The rite was reversed, and the energy vanished into the evening. Marcus was arrested once the dust settled; his machinations came to light. Defaced and helpless, Selena was expelled from Silver Hollow; her threats were void. Ryan and I stood together later, our relationship stronger than ever. Ready to lead our packs into a fresh period of togetherness and hope, we had confronted the darkness and come out triumphant. And I realized our trip was just starting when the first light of dawn broke across Silver Hollow. Our hearts bonded by love and the unwavering spirit of our forebears, together we would meet any obstacles ahead.
