Chapter 1: Charlotte POV
I watch the other kids run and play. I don’t understand why dad made me come here. I feel so out of place, they all hate me for being different. I sigh when I hear her laughter come from behind me. For thirteen year olds these kids were cruel especially him. “Look she can’t even be normal and sit on the chair she chooses to sit in the dirt.” Amanda’s voice was like cat nails on a calk board. I shake my head not giving her the attention she wanted. I had just been sitting like my mother use to when she wore dresses with knees together bend to the side, nothing abnormal. I quickly grab my bag and try to get away from her and her friend group. I don’t know what I ever did to make them bother me. I gasp more focused on putting my stuff away that I slam into a chest. I look up and meet a pair deep blue grey eyes, I gulp and words caught in my throat. Some stupid part of me thinks he will make Amanda leave as everyone seemed to idol you and listen regardless of what it was. He had been my only friend when I moved to this place four years ago until 2 summers ago until he just cut me out of his life. “Stop, give it back,”I say seriously as he rip my bag away and pull a small wolf pure white plushy out, that was mostly grey now. My heart drops, it was the only thing of my mother’s I was allowed to keep. “Vincent, give it back.” I plead softly trying to reach it as he holds it above his head using his height to my disadvantage. Everyone laughs as he mock me before he tears it apart. Everything vanishes as I curl my fingers into a fist while my other hand makes contact with his cheek. The slap echoes around us as everyone stares in shock. I have no urge to break eye contact as he stares down at me his eyes darkening before he shoves me back into the rocks lining the sidewalk. I bite my lip stifling my cry of pain as a cut manages to cut my palm. I snap my head up as he growls stomping away no one has ever had the audacity to do such a thing to him. I shake my head quickly as the memory quickly vanishes as him growling happily towards Amanda makes the memory vanish. I sigh softly grabbing my book bag out of my locker before making my way to class. As I’m passing them she purposely makes eye contact with me while shoving her tongue down her throat. I pretend to gag, knowing she was egging me on wanting me to do something with that boldness I had five years ago when I slapped him. I was determined not to give into that impulse even when the guys in this place found it sport to flirt with me since I had no interests in any of them. I made sure not to get close to anyone after him. I roll my eyes as one of the frequently fliers strides up next to me, “Charlie, are you going to join me at Vincent’s party tonight? It’ll be fun I promise?” He smirks at me rolling my eyes. “I wouldn’t be caught dead at his party.” I can’t help but glance back towards him and Amanda basically have s** down the hallway. His party’s were everything in this town and this one was the biggest as it was his 18th at midnight. There had been one point we would’ve spent it together but he turned into the cruelest tormenter. “Why don’t you ask someone who’s desperate for your attention Miles,” I grumble focusing on the wall to class. I avoid as many altercations as I possible can before the days up, I sigh softly as there’s a note in my locker. ‘Meet me at the party. We need to talk’ Vincent. I frown looking at it but the hallways empty as everyone cleared out after class. I shove it back in my pocket before walking home. I sigh softly laying my book bag on the plain bed before biting my lip glancing in the mirror. This doesn’t make any sense he hadn’t pay any attention to me besides indulging with Amanda on her harassment. I stare at my reflection Amanda’s words creeping in the back of my head, ‘plain, boring, unattractive, friendless, worthless’ the words repeat as I stare at my plain blonde hair with freckles decorating my t zone and on my cheeks. The only mildly interesting thing was my emerald green eyes; starting to dismiss the whole idea my phone dings with a text. ‘Hey, it’s Miles I’ve been assigned as your party escort. Picking you up at 10, dress up doll.’ I can’t help but roll my eyes. That feeling in my gut screams this is a bad idea but the other part growls wanting to be bold. My fingers automatically sent the same text letting my dad know id be at home like usual. Not like he’d care since he was always out doing things at night. I watch my reflection as I curled my pin straight hair, the ends brush against the end of my shoulder blades in this spaghetti strapped dusty sundress. I smear the dark brown shadow on my lids making my eyes pop even more with the pale lip color I chose. I could look so much like my mother when I chose to but something made me hate wearing the makeup that made me look so much like her. I roll my eyes starting to doubt Miles was actually gonna show as the clock ticks closer to 10. I jump as I hear a car horn beeping letting me know his arrival. “What could go wrong?” I mumble to myself locking the front door before joining Miles.
