Bailey’s POV
“The pregnancy test is positive, Luna Bailey.”
The words should have filled me with joy.
Instead, they shattered my world.
“I’m going to be a father.”
Jared–my mate and the Alpha of Grim Hallow, stood frozen in the consultation room, staring at the floor as the words sank in.
Shock flashed across his face.
Then joy followed.
Pure, unrestrained joy.
But that joy wasn’t directed at me.
He turned and pulled my twin sister, Hailey, into his arms.
“We’re going to be parents,” he said hoarsely. “The Grim Hallow legacy continues.”
My chest tightened painfully as I watched his lips crash against hers.
The kiss was messy. Hungry. Possessive.
Wet sounds filled the quiet room.
The pack doctor awkwardly turned away, pretending to review medical files, while I lowered my head and fought to breathe.
Tear them apart.
Straw–my wolf, snarled inside my mind.
He’s yours. Not hers.
I clenched my fists, forcing her down.
Straw… we agreed to this.
But she howled in agony.
I can’t take this anymore! Why are we letting this happen?
A lump the size of a stone lodged in my throat.
The sounds of their kiss echoed like mockery in my ears.
This nightmare had begun three moons ago.
On the night of my fifth mating anniversary.
I had spent seven hours preparing Jared’s favorite dishes for an intimate dinner. Every candle was perfectly placed, every plate arranged with care.
I wanted the night to be special.
Instead, it became the night everything began to fall apart.
Jared had barely touched his food.
He cut into his steak once, then set his knife and fork down with a quiet clink.
“Bailey,” he said calmly, “today marks five years since you became my mate.”
My heart fluttered nervously.
“I know,” I replied softly, smiling.
But his expression remained cold.
“Five years,” he continued, “and you still haven’t given me an heir to carry the Grim Hallow name.”
The smile froze on my face.
“I’m….”
“We need to consider other options.”
He didn’t even let me finish speaking.
My spoon slipped from my fingers and clinked against the plate.
“The way you’re saying that,” I said slowly, “it sounds like you’ve already thought of something.”
A flicker of hesitation crossed his eyes.
Then it disappeared.
“I have.”
The answer came quickly.
Too quickly.
And then he said the words that changed everything.
“Hailey will take your place.”
For a moment, I thought I had misheard him.
“What?”
“She’ll pose as you,” Jared explained calmly. “She will act as a surrogate. When the child is born, it will officially be recognized as ours.”
I stared at him in disbelief.
The candlelight flickered across the table, illuminating the meal I had spent hours preparing, now growing cold and untouched.
“I’m not sure this is a good idea,” I whispered. “We’d be lying to the pack and—”
“Would it be better to keep disappointing them?”
His voice turned sharp.
“But the pack doctor said there’s nothing wrong with me,” I protested weakly.
“Who cares what the doctor says?”
Jared slammed his hand onto the table.
The plates rattled violently.
“Five years, Bailey,” he said, his voice dripping with frustration. “Five years, and the only thing your womb has proven to be is defective.”
The word hit like a blade.
Defective.
Tears burned behind my eyes, but I forced them back.
A Luna could not break so easily.
“Just… give me more time,” I pleaded quietly.
“Bailey.” His voice was dangerously tight. “Can’t you hear the whispers?”
My fingers curled together.
Of course I could.
The pack members had stopped hiding their pity long ago.
Once, I had been their beloved Luna.
Now I was little more than a disappointment, a failure.
I could endure the humiliation, I could bear the shame. But the thought of Jared’s reputation suffering because of me was unbearable.
And so…
I agreed.
The plan began soon after. Hailey stepped into my place.
And she slipped into it effortlessly.
She moved into my bedroom and I moved into hers.
Every day, I watched them pretend to be a couple while I slept alone.
It hurt.
God, it hurt.
But I told myself it was temporary. Nine months. Just nine months.
Then she would give birth. The child would be mine.
Jared would return to me.
Everything would go back to the way it was.
Right?
I forced myself back to the present and lifted my head.
Rubbing my sweaty palms together, I put on a practiced smile.
“A pup,” I said brightly. “This is wonderful news.”
Everyone in the room looked at me strangely.
But no one said anything.
Their silent stares burned worse than words.
I was part of this.
Wasn’t I?
Hailey walked past me, rubbing slow circles over her stomach even though it was still flat.
She turned and beamed at me.
“Isn’t this amazing?” she said excitedly. “I’m going to be a mom!”
That sister of ours really doesn’t know when to stop, Straw snarled.
I kept my expression carefully neutral.
Too many people were watching.
I couldn’t correct her now.
Jared stepped beside her and wrapped an arm around her waist.
“My moonshine,” he murmured, his voice softer than I had heard in years. “We should celebrate tonight. Where would you like to go?”
Her smile widened instantly.
“Oh! There’s this restaurant—”
They continued chatting as if I didn’t exist.
Straw burned with jealousy inside me.
Separate them, she begged. He belongs to us.
I forced her into silence.
Don’t make a scene. They’re only pretending so the pack won’t suspect anything.
Straw scoffed.
Pretending? He never kissed you like that before.
The words struck like lightning.
Jared was known as the Ice Alpha.
Cold. Ruthless. Untouchable.
Even with me his fated mate, there had always been a distance I could never cross.
But with Hailey…
He looked at her like she was the moon itself.
I shook my head sharply, forcing those thoughts away.
No.
I was the one he chose.
Five years ago.
I still remembered the moment clearly.
Fate had tangled the three of us together that night.
But when the mate bond appeared, Jared had stepped forward and taken my hands.
Then he said the words that changed my life.
“You will be my mate.”
The memory echoed in my mind as I sat in the backseat of the car, listening to my mate and my sister laughing together in the front.
When we arrived at the packhouse, their glowing expressions immediately sparked whispers among the pack members.
I quietly slipped away.
Returning to Hailey’s room–my temporary room. I lay down on the hard mattress that felt more like a slab of stone.
Sleep was just beginning to claim me when a knock sounded on the door.
With a tired sigh, I opened it.
Hailey stood there.
One hand rested on her still-flat stomach.
Her expression was unreadable.
“Bailey,” she said softly.
“We need to talk.”
I’m
