10 The roof of The Thinking Bean was a flat industrial space. A huge square air conditioning unit covered in sheets of plastic tarp jutted up out of the roof near the back. Various pipes and vents stuck up in small groups at different degrees of height, billowing steam into the night. Weather beaten wood planks were built into a shoddy looking shed structure whose exact role was a mystery. A hip high brick wall bordered the edge of the entire roof, which discouraged anyone from stepping off and dropping to the sidewalk below. The top of the fire escape they had used to climb up was still visible on the other side of that brick wall from where they now stood, but just barely. All of the charm and character of the old building that was present inside was non-existent on the roof. In fact,
