RELEASED
Shea had no idea what time it was when one of the COs opened the cell door and called her name.
“Stevens, Shea. Your bail’s been posted.” The CO looked like one of those brawny Russian women she’d seen in movies about the Cold War.
“Thank God.” She pivoted and plopped her butt into the rickety wheelchair. This time, at least, she wasn’t handcuffed.
The ache in her knee had subsided to a bearable level. The road rash still felt raw but wasn’t burning like it had been. Maybe she was on the mend after all. Thank goodness for small blessings. But until Annie was safely home, she couldn’t rest.
Dragon was waiting for her in the jail’s lobby. She held a small box with Shea’s personal effects, with the crutches tucked under one arm. “How you doing, sister?”
