CHAPTER 1: THE YEARS BETWEEN
The graduation hall smelled of old wood and cheap perfume. Elara Whitmore stood at the podium, her hands steady on the lectern, her voice clear as she delivered her valedictorian speech. Three hundred faces stared back. She only saw one. Callan Westbrook sat in the third row, his eyes fixed on her like she was the only person in the room. His mother had left halfway through the ceremony, face tight with disapproval. Callan didn't flinch when she walked out. He kept watching Elara. She spoke about dreams and hard work and the future. Words she'd rehearsed a hundred times. But her mind drifted to the rooftop three nights ago, his hand on her cheek, his voice rough with promise. "I'll come back for you." She'd believed him. The ceremony ended with applause. Families rushed forward with flowers and cameras. Elara stepped off the stage, searching through the crowd. Then Callan was there, pulling her aside, away from the noise. "Congratulations, valedictorian." His thumb traced her knuckles. "You were incredible." "Callan, what happens now?" He glanced back at the empty seat where his mother had been. "I'm going to my father's company. I'll take over. Change everything." His jaw tightened. "And when I'm ready, I'll come for you. I promise." Before she could answer, someone stepped between them. Alden Sterling smiled. It didn't reach his eyes. "You won't come for anyone, Callan." He straightened Callan's tie like he was a child. "You'll be too busy ruining everything you touch." "Stay out of this, Alden." The older man turned to Elara. "But you'll learn that soon enough." Callan grabbed her hand and walked her out. At the entrance, he kissed her forehead, quick and fierce. Then he walked away, disappearing into a black car. Elara stood alone, her gown heavy, her heart heavier. "I'll wait too," she whispered. "But how long before hope becomes foolish?" Three years changed everything. Elara sat at her desk outside the corner office, typing reports she'd typed a thousand times. Westbrook Industries towered above the city, all glass and steel and cold ambition. She'd worked here for two years now. Scholarship girl turned assistant. Dreamer turned ghost. She watched him through the glass. Callan Westbrook stood by the window, phone pressed to his ear, his voice flat and cutting. Some manager on the line. Something about quarterly losses. Something about being replaced if he couldn't deliver. "Fix it or pack your desk," Callan said. He ended the call without waiting for a response. Elara looked down at her keyboard. This was the man she'd waited for. The boy who'd kissed her on the rooftop. Who'd promised to change everything. Now he changed quarterly reports and fired people before lunch. He turned from the window and caught her watching. His eyes flickered—recognition, maybe. Or just annoyance. "Whitmore, get me the quarterly reports. Now." "Yes, Mr. Westbrook." She rose and walked to the filing cabinet. Three years of waiting. Three years of hoping. Three years of learning that the man she loved had become the man he swore he'd never be. Ronan Beckett passed her desk, coffee in hand. He paused. "You okay?" "Fine." "You look like you're somewhere else." She forced a smile. "Just tired, Ronan." He didn't believe her. But he didn't push. He never did. Ronan always knew more than he said. Elara pulled the reports from the drawer and walked toward the office. Through the glass, she saw Callan check his phone. Scroll past something. His face didn't change. She knocked. "Enter." She placed the reports on his desk. He didn't look up. "Is that all, Mr. Westbrook?" "Leave the door open on your way out." She left it open. She returned to her desk and sat in the chair that had molded to her shape over two years. Two years of watching him. Two years of waiting for a flicker. A glance. A sign that he remembered anything. She saw glimpses sometimes. In the way he hesitated before firing someone. The way he rubbed his temples after board meetings. The way he stood on the rooftop of this very building, staring at the sky. But those glimpses were buried deep. And he never looked at her. Elara stayed late that night. She always stayed late. It was easier than going home to an empty apartment. Easier than staring at the ceiling and wondering what she'd done wrong. The office was quiet. Lights dimmed. Cleaning crew moved through the lower floors. She sat at her desk, scrolling through old photos on her phone. Graduation. Callan in his gown, laughing at something she'd said. Their first date. Coffee at a small shop where he'd held her hand across the table. Then the rooftop. She closed the photo app. Put the phone face-down. "You're still here." She looked up. Callan stood in his office doorway, jacket off, sleeves rolled. He looked tired. Human. "Just finishing some paperwork, Mr. Westbrook." He walked toward her, slow and deliberate. Stopped at her desk. Looked down at her like she was a stranger. "Go home, Whitmore. You work too much." The words were kind. His tone was empty. "Three years," she said. He frowned. "Excuse me?" She stood. Her heart pounded. Three years of silence. Three years of hoping he'd remember. Three years of watching him destroy everything they'd promised. "The rooftop. Graduation. You told me you'd come for me." Callan's jaw tightened. His eyes shifted away. Then back. Harder this time. "I remember." She froze. "Then why—" "Because it was a mistake." His voice was flat. Controlled. "We were kids, Elara. You were a scholarship student. I was drowning in family pressure. Neither of us knew what we wanted." "You promised me." "I was trying to be someone I wasn't." He stepped closer. Too close. His voice dropped. "I hired you because you were the best person for the job. Not because of some rooftop confession." "Don't do this," she whispered. "Don't pretend it meant nothing." "It meant something then." He rubbed the back of his neck. Exhaustion bleeding through. "But I'm not that boy anymore. And you're not that girl. I thought if I brought you here, if I gave you a career, a future, you'd move on." "You thought hiring me would make me forget?" "I thought it would help you. Help us both." His eyes met hers. Pain flickered there, quick as lightning. "I'm trying to protect you from who I've become." "I don't want protection. I want.." "I know what you want." He cut her off. "But I can't give it to you. So let it go, Elara. Please." He walked back to his office. Paused at the door. "Go home. We'll talk in the morning. About work." The door clicked shut. Elara stood frozen. Tears burned her eyes but she blinked them back. He remembered. He hired her. He gave her a career. But he'd convinced himself forgetting was better. She gathered her things. Purse. Keys. Phone. The photo she kept in her drawer—the one of them at graduation. She tucked it in her bag. As she walked toward the elevator, she passed Ronan's office. The light was on. He sat at his desk, watching her through the glass. She didn't stop. She stepped into the elevator. The doors closed. And she finally let herself cry. Three years of waiting. Three years of hoping. Three years of learning that the man she loved had chosen to become a stranger. And he'd made that choice on purpose.
