CHAPTER ONE - SHADOWS OF THE PAST
The ballroom lights glittered like a thousand tiny suns, spilling gold across the marble floors and the sea of expensive suits drifting through the crowd. Everyone moved with an ease I’d never mastered:smooth, unbothered, as if wealth made them immune to gravity. My palms weren’t so lucky. They were damp, trembling slightly against the soft leather of the folder I clutched to my chest. Relax, Elena. You’re not here to impress them. You’re here to work. But even that reminder didn’t slow my heartbeat. Not tonight. The annual Prime Innovators Gala was one of those events people watched on livestreams and wished they were invited to. I’d never imagined I’d be inside it and even standing beneath crystal chandeliers, wearing a dress borrowed from my boss’s wife, and praying my voice wouldn’t shake when I met our new corporate partner. I inhaled, letting the scent of roses, champagne, and polished money settle in my lungs. My reflection in a mirror near the wall caught my eye, black curls pinned neatly, skin glowing under the warm light, eyes sharp enough to fake confidence. Just as I straightened my shoulders, my phone buzzed. Lily. Her tiny voice burst through the speaker before I even said hello. “Mommy, guess what? I showed Grandma my butterfly drawing and she said” My chest softened. “She said you’re an artist. And she’s absolutely right.” “I saved the picture for you,” Lily continued. “You can see it when you come home from the party place.” “The event, sweetheart,” I whispered, smiling. “I’ll be home soon. Be good for Grandma, okay?” “I love youuuu,” she sang, stretching the last syllable. “I love you more.” The moment the call ended, the room felt colder. Like real life had paused, and this glamorous world had swallowed me whole. I tucked my phone away, unaware that fate was already shifting beneath my feet. “Ms. Hart?” I turned and froze. Chloe, one of the event coordinators, offered a polite smile. “Your client will see you now. He just arrived.” “Great,” I said, though my stomach tightened. “Lead the way.” We weaved through the crowd, past executives with knowing smirks, women in gowns threaded with diamonds, servers balancing trays of champagne that cost more than my monthly rent. But the closer we got to the VIP lounge, the stronger the unease in my chest grew. A strange prickle at the base of my neck. A pull in the air. An intuition I couldn’t name. Chloe opened the door and stepped aside. “He’s right in” Her voice dissolved. Because my world had already stopped. Standing with his back to me, suit tailored sharp against broad shoulders, was a silhouette I’d tried to forget for five years. A silhouette that haunted photographs, dreams, and every attempt I made to rebuild myself. He turned slowly. And my heartbeat cracked itself against my ribs. Aiden Cross. He looked older. Harder. More dangerous. His jaw sharper, hair darker, eyes colder midnight blue behind a fortress of self-control. His expression didn’t shift. Not even a little. But something flickered behind his eyes, something fast and painful. “Elena.” Just my name. Spoken like a memory dragged back from a locked room. My throat closed. “Aiden.” Silence spread between us, thick enough to choke on. He was the last person I expected to see. The last person I wanted to see. The last person who should have had any power over me. But the universe has always been a bad comedian. I forced professionalism into my voice. “We’re here to finalize the brand concept. I have the drafts” “Not here,” he cut in softly, his voice smooth but unreadable. “We need to speak alone.” Chloe slipped out, closing the door behind her like she sensed the air could shatter. My grip tightened on the folder. “Aiden, we don’t need…” “Yes,” he said, stepping closer. “We do.” His cologne drifted to me…clean, subtle, expensive. A scent that dragged memories up from depths I’d avoided for years. The nights we stayed up studying. The stolen kisses under streetlights. The morning he vanished without a trace. The morning I realized he would never know about the child he left behind. My breath trembled. Aiden’s eyes narrowed, searching my face as if it held answers he’d lost. “You look… different.” “People usually do after five years.” A corner of his mouth twitched, not quite a smile. “Still sharp.” “And you’re still late,” I shot back, lifting my chin. Something flashed in his eyes..hurt? amusement? recognition? before he masked it again. “Come with me,” he said quietly. “I’m working.” “And I’m the client.” His tone snapped lightly against my pride. I hated that he was right. I hated more that my legs moved despite my anger. He led me to an empty terrace overlooking the city. Cold wind brushed my skin. The lights of Manhattan glittered like a thousand secrets below us. I crossed my arms. “Say whatever you need to say so we can move on.” Aiden didn’t look at me at first. He stared at the city. At something far away. At something not yet revealed. Then he turned and the expression in his eyes made my breath falter. “Why are you here, Elena?” he asked quietly. “Why now?” My pulse spiked. “I work here.” “No.” His voice deepened. “That’s not what I mean.” He stepped closer, shadows carving his face into something dangerous. “You shouldn’t be here,” he murmured. “Not… anywhere near me.” Something heavy slid down my spine. “And why is that?” I demanded. A cold, brittle silence separated us. Then he said it. Soft. Controlled. Terrifying. “Because there are things you still don’t know. Things I never wanted you dragged into.” The wind stilled. My breath caught. The city noise faded beneath the weight of his words. I stared at him, throat tight. “Aiden…” “What things?” His jaw clenched hard enough to c***k. He looked down at me then really looked like he was memorizing every line of my face before stepping into something irreversible. “I’ll explain,” he said, voice rough. “But not tonight.” “And why not?” His answer was a whisper. “Because you’re not safe here.” My heart stuttered in my chest. And before I could question him further, the terrace door swung open. Vivienne Kane stepped into the light, her smile angelic, her eyes poisonous. “Aiden,” she purred, “you’re needed inside.” She glanced at me. Up and down. Slow, assessing, cruel. “Oh. You brought… company.” Aiden’s jaw tightened. “Elena is here for business,” he said sharply. Vivienne’s smile widened. “Of course she is.” Her gaze sliced through me like glass. Stay away. That was the message hidden behind her eyes. Aiden exhaled tightly. “We’ll finish this later, Elena.” His voice dropped. “Don’t go far.” And with that, he followed Vivienne inside…his shoulders tense, his expression stormed over with something I didn’t understand. I stayed on the terrace, cold air biting my skin, hands trembling like someone had reached inside me and shaken everything loose. Safe? From what? From who? Aiden had returned to my world after five years. But the man who left me wasn’t the man standing in that ballroom now. This version was darker, sharper and hiding something dangerous. I pressed a hand against my chest, feeling the rapid thump of my pulse. He didn’t know Lily existed. He didn’t know the truth. And something deep inside me whispered that when those worlds collided… nothing in my life would stay the same.
