CHAPTER 1: The Unseen Threat
“Hurry up Kai, we are late, let's go!" Aurora yelled at Kai as she stood in front of the car waiting for Kai as he ran out of the front door with his uniform shirt partially unbuttoned and tie loose hanging around his neck. "Sorry" he said as he approached the car where Aurora and the driver were waiting. "Bye, Mom!" Aurora called out, waving to her mother, who smiled and waved back. "Have a great day, sweetie! Kai, take care of Aurora!" Aurora's mother reminded him. Kai nodded, "Will do, Mrs Lylah. They both entered the back seat of the car and Mr Hyde hurriedly drove them to school. Aurora turned to face Kai, who was struggling to arrange his tie, "Here, let me do that". When are you going to change Kai, you are never on time. She said as she finished fixing his tie. "Not yet, just a bit more patience. And thank you", Kai replied with a smile. "I swear, I'm trying. You know I hate mornings." Aurora playfully rolled her eyes, "That's no excuse, you're just lazy." As the car pulled up to the school entrance, Aurora smoothed out Kai's collar. "There, you're presentable now." Kai grinned, "Thanks, mom." Aurora chuckled and playfully pushed him. The car door opened, and they stepped out, joining the stream of students. "Have a good day, kids," Mr. Hyde said with a smile. "You too, Mr. Hyde," they chimed in unison. As they walked toward their classrooms, Aurora said, "See you at lunch, Kai?" Kai nodded, "Yeah, I'll meet you in the cafeteria." They parted ways, Aurora heading to her fifth-grade class and Kai to his sixth-grade class. With backpacks adjusted and smiles exchanged, they disappeared into their respective classrooms. Aurora and Kai were inseparable best friends as kids. Growing up in the same neighbourhood in Linda Vista, California. Aurora's family of five lived in a charming, two-story house with a small garden and a picket white fence. Her father, Asher Larkin, was a skilled chef in a reputable restaurant and, with her mother, Lylah Larkin, working as the house manager for the wealthy Reed family, ...the family managed to maintain a comfortable lifestyle. Aurora's elder brother, Dorian, was a responsible and studious 15-year-old, while Aurora herself was a bright and cheerful 11-year-old. Her younger sister, Sophie, was a playful and energetic 6-year-old, always full of curiosity and joy. The Reed family was a prominent and influential family in the community. Julian Reed was the owner of the famous billionaire energy company, Reed Aurum Energy (RAE. PLC). Victoria Reed, Kai's mother, was a renowned author, known for her bestselling novels. Rylan Reed, Kai's 16-year-old brother, was being groomed to take over the family business when he came of age, expected to step into a leadership role when Julian retired. Augustus, Kai's uncle, held a powerful position as the vice chairman of the company's board of directors, though his motives were often shrouded in mystery. Meanwhile, Kai, 12, and his little sister Amy, 3, enjoyed the privileges and responsibilities that came with being part of the wealthy Reed family. As they sat together in the cafeteria, Aurora and Kai reminisced about their favorite childhood memories. Aurora's eyes lit up as she pulled out a worn but endearing handmade doll from her backpack. Starlight, with her delicate lace dress and soft, golden curls, had a small inscription on the back of her dress that read "Forever Friends"- a message Kai had written when he gave her the doll. "My favorite doll, Starlight!" she exclaimed. Kai smiled, remembering the day he gave it to her. "You loved it so much," he said, chuckling. Aurora nodded, hugging the doll tightly. "You gave it to me on my birthday, and I've kept it ever since." Meanwhile, Kai's thoughts drifted to his own beloved pet, Luna, the beautiful brown, gray, and white cat who loved to snuggle. He couldn't wait to see her when he got home. The nostalgia was palpable as they both cherished these reminders of their special bond. In a luxurious office where the billionaire REED AURUM ENERGY (RAE. PLC) headquarters is located in Los Angeles, Mr. Augustus sat across from Julian Reed, his brother, during a tense meeting. Julian leaned back in his chair, confident in his vision for the company's future. "As you know, Augustus, I've been grooming Rylan to take over the empire when he's of age. He's got a natural talent for leadership and a keen eye for innovation." Mr. Augustus's expression darkened, his eyes narrowing with resentment. "Rylan?" he repeated, his voice dripping with disdain. "That boy's got a lot to learn before he can run this company." Julian smiled, unfazed. "I disagree, Augustus. Rylan's got potential, and I'm confident he'll do great things." Mr. Augustus's face twisted in anger, and he struggled to keep his composure. As the meeting adjourned, Mr. Augustus's anger simmered beneath the surface. He couldn't accept that his brother had chosen Rylan, his own nephew, to succeed him. Augustus believes he deserves more recognition and authority, and his brother's decision felt like a bitter slap in the face. The more he thought about it, the more he seethed with resentment. Kai and Aurora returned home from school, chatting excitedly about their day. As they approached the front door of Reed's mansion, Luna, Kai's beloved cat, spotted them from the window and began to meow eagerly. She darted to the door, tail twitching, and greeted them with a series of affectionate headbutts and purrs as they entered the house. Kai and Aurora spent the afternoon playing and doing their homework together, enjoying each other's company. As the evening drew to a close, Julian Reed, surrounded by his two bodyguards, packed up his things and prepared to head home. His bodyguards, Victor and Marcus, stood by the door, scanning the surroundings with a mix of professionalism and familiarity. That night, in Mr. In Augustus' dimly lit study, his thoughts turned to murder. He began to formulate a plan, his mind racing with ways to eliminate Julian and take control of the empire for himself. The darkness seemed to be closing in around him, fueling his ambition and hatred. With a calculating gaze, he picked up the phone and started making calls, setting his plan in motion using one of Julian's bodyguards, Victor. Unbeknownst to Julian, Victor had been secretly working with Mr. Augustus, feeding him information about Julian's schedule and security measures. Marcus, Julian's other bodyguard, was supposed to follow in a separate car, providing additional security. However, Victor had cleverly manipulated the schedule, suggesting that Marcus take a different route to check on some potential security threats in the area. Marcus, trusting Victor's judgment, agreed to take the detour, leaving Victor to drive Julian alone. The streets were quiet as they navigated the familiar road, the only sound being the soft hum of the car's engine. As Julian's car approached the predetermined spot, Victor, his trusted bodyguard and driver, slowed down, his eyes flicking to the rearview mirror. Mister Augustus emerged from the shadows, his eyes locked on the car. Victor's gaze met Augustus', a brief nod exchanged between them. "Almost there, sir," Victor said, his voice steady, as he veered the car onto a deserted side road. Julian, engrossed in his phone, didn't notice the change in route. "Victor, where's Marcus? I thought he was following us," Julian asked, looking up. Marcus took a detour to check on some potential security threats, sir. "He'll meet us at the house," Victor replied, his tone neutral. As the car pulled up to the predetermined spot, Julian looked out the window, frowning. "Victor, where are we? This isn't the house."
