I got to school rather early today and I’m at my locker, fixing my things into it when Charlotte swayed her hips to my side. “Hey! Whatcha you up to?”
She chirped, the glow of a great day tainting her face and I eyed it for a second before diverting my gaze back to selecting the notebook for first period. I smirked a bit. “Why do I feel like that question is for you?”
She smiled, resting her backs against the locker next to mine. “Now, what do you mean?”
“Miles”
I inputted and she blinked back a blush. I worsened it. “You literally chased me away yesterday.” Then groaned, a flashback surging into my memory without asking. “Remind me never to catch the sight of you and miles kissing”
I closed my lockers shut. “Ever”
I gushed while she was laughing herself out. “Innocent, are you?”
She winked, uttering matter-of-factly. “You’re exaggerating”
A sore smile made their way to my lips. “Of cause I am”
She chuckled, nudging me a bit. “Okay. Enough about me. How is it going?”
I frowned. “What? The rush-girl nonsense”
“Well—” Her lit up face formed a little crease as though just remembering that. “I didn’t mean that, but I’m all ears. If there’s anything new, of cause”
She diverted and I shook my head at her. “Nothing new, okay?”
“What?”
She flipped her red-hair in some attractive way as she whispered. “Was on a need-to-know. I mean, not everyone has three princes at their back and call”
“Three idiots”
I corrected and she smirked. “If they are hot, then same thing, honey”
“Oh…god”
I groaned and she’s laughing again. I was mentally trying to be time conscious. I didn’t want to be late for the first period while I was chatting away as sometimes I could forget myself when talking with Charlotte. “Okay. Okay”
She sobered. “Back to whatever”
She wiggled her brows and to say that I was lost would be an understatement. “What again?”
“The party of cause”
“You didn’t even tell me about it”
Her tone was almost offended and I was even more confused. “What party?”
“Birthday… party”
She said slowly reading off the expressions on my face after a while, she was scuffing and unbelievably. “I see you have no idea”
“Betty posted the invitation to your massive birthday party on her i********: early this morning. The whole school wouldn’t stop talking about it”
I blinked and she seemed a little hesitant to spill further but after a few seconds she was uttering. “Weird thing. The invitation poster is covered with your picture, Kathy”
My jaw almost drop. “What?”
“Me?”
Charlotte shrugged before uttering. “I don’t know. I mean, no one ever understands Betty”
Trust me, I totally agreed with her. Charlotte was friends with practically almost everyone in school. She was the popular cool kid which was loved by virtually everyone, students and including teachers. Yet—, there seemed to be an obvious strained relationship between Charlotte and betty.
I turned to the side a little, catching sight of betty in the mist of her minions. She had her hands stylishly posed with her purse in her fingers. Accentuated blood-red lipsticks, short skirts, heels and a regular b***h-face. For a moment, I wondered what she was telling her minions in such a serious face.
I looked away from the sight only to see Charlotte staring at it too. She whispered. “I heard Luke broke up with her”
“They weren’t ever dating”
I uttered without thinking before what she said actually registered. “Wait what—”
Charlotte nodded. “Yeah”
“and what do you mean by they weren’t ever dating?”
I blinked, coughing lightly and lying smoothly, not thinking I wanted to expose that yet. “Nothing”
“She doesn’t look heartbroken to me”
Charlotte uttered a while and I was nodding in a frown, wondering how she was felt. Luke was such an i***t. This wasn’t what I asked him to do and didn’t he say that there weren’t any emotions involved in whatever he was doing with Betty.
I hated her but after all she was still my sister. If she was hurt, I’ll be so mad at him. I sighed, resisting the urge to massage my templates as I uttered all of a sudden. “The poster…”
“Let me guess. I look like a maniac in it, right?”
Charlotte eyes made a glint of something. “Did you really wear diapers at fifteen?”
My eyes widened. Crap.
Double crap. What did Betty do?
***
The siren rang for the first period and Charlotte and I were briefly making our way to our different classes. My first subject was math or torture whatever way you’d like to put it. I spent half the while, trying to convince myself to stay awake and at least, scribble down something. I lost my vigour two minutes into the period, and giving into the crave to get a short nap but the short nap lasted for the entire period, by the time I was waking the siren was ringing and the teacher was making his way out the door, just within seconds, the class was emptied out. I was still in the process of gathering my things when a familiar voice uttered into the silence. “Sleeping beauty”
“How was your nap?”
I looked up. It was Cade and behind my head I wondered where he suddenly appeared from. I didn’t spot him earlier. “Great”
“And you?”
I muttered and he was chuckling. “Sadly, I was busy listening to the lecture. I guessed I missed out”
I hummed at him and arching my brows. “I see”
“Didn’t you just enter the class?”
His chuckle widened. “You only think bad things about me”
He noted, not a question. He seemed convinced about it and I wasn’t going to lie to him. “You don’t exactly have the best reputation, you know?”
His dark eyes walked over me in a way that made my stomach clench a little. In a confusing way. “And what have you been hearing uh?”
I shrugged. “A thin line between you being a serial killer or a gang leader”
He smirked, though not denying anything exactly. I frowned, wondering for a split second if the rumours were actually true. I recalled Charlotte telling me about hearing that he was in a gang and to compound things. He always had this black aesthetic crap. Of cause. He wasn’t a serial killer. That was obviously made up but could he..?
A crease came into my brows as I looked at his smug figure. The way he lazily swung his hands into his leader Jackets, his dangerously thick features. Dark curls, deep black eyes, toxic cologne and his lips—Everything screamed danger.
I was jerked out of my daze once I felt cade’s hands tugging my hair behind my ears. I glanced up in a jiffy. There was a glint of something in his eyes as he muttered. “Then you should stop listening to gossip”
I blinked, watching him straightened himself up and I repeatedly kept reminding myself that he was only flirting with me because of the stupid bet. Which meant that i’ll be stupid to fall for anything.
I instantly sprung to my feet, gathering my books and casting him a tight smile. “I think I should..Err.. get going”
His eyes flew to the clock at the other end. “We don’t have class until—”
I cut him because there was no way in hell that I was spending anymore second here with him. “I need to use the restroom”
“Oh”
He said in squinted eyes and I nodded in very a rehearsed way. As I was making my way toward the door he uttered all of a sudden, cutting through the silence. “The birthday poster…”
My eyes widened on an instant, heart racing as a flashback of a known picture came crashing on my memory. I didn’t miss the muse behind his words. He coughed. “I mean, happy birthday in advance”
I blinked, hands paused on the doorknobs, I couldn’t say the appropriate words under such conditions. I gritted instead. “Crap”
Pulling the door open. I didn’t need to look behind to know that he was smiling himself away. Double crap.
I think it was high time that I found my ‘dear’ sister.
Betty.
