Chapter 1: Vow

404 Words
Selena sat on the edge of their king-size bed, staring at the ceiling as the morning sunlight peeked through the blinds. The house was silent except for the occasional hum of the air conditioner. She hugged her knees close to her chest, trying to calm the storm of thoughts in her mind. Greco, her husband, walked past the bedroom without even a glance. His crisp white shirt and perfectly tailored trousers made him look untouchable, like a man who belonged to the world and not to her. “Good morning, Selena,” she tried, her voice soft but hopeful. He didn’t answer. Not even a word. Just a nod as he headed straight for the study, leaving the breakfast untouched on the table. Selena felt the familiar sting in her chest. It wasn’t the first time she felt invisible in her own home. She took a deep breath, telling herself to be strong. She had to. Days turned into weeks, and weeks into months, yet nothing seemed to change. Greco’s love—or what used to be love—was buried under his busy schedule and unspoken frustrations. Selena tried to remind herself of the man she fell in love with, the one who used to whisper sweet nothings in her ear and hold her hand during late-night walks. But lately, those memories felt like echoes from a different lifetime. That evening, she found him in the living room, staring at his laptop screen. She approached him slowly, her heart beating faster than she wanted to admit. “Greco… can we talk?” she asked, her voice trembling. He didn’t look up. “I’m busy,” he muttered without emotion. The words cut deeper than she expected. Busy. That was his constant excuse. Busy at work, busy with meetings, busy with everything except her. Selena’s hands shook as she turned away. “Busy, huh? When was the last time you were busy loving me?” she whispered to herself, tears threatening to fall. That night, she cried silently on their bed, feeling the weight of a love that had once been alive but was now suffocating. She wondered how it came to this—how a life built on promises and dreams could feel so empty. As she drifted to a restless sleep, she made a quiet vow to herself: she would find her happiness again. Even if it meant discovering it without him.
