8: Meet Mr. Maninway
CALLAGHAN came down the wide staircase. He was whistling softly to himself. The tune was still "It Was Good While It Lasted." Callaghan, who did not know the words that went with the tune, wondered what was good while what lasted. He made up his mind to find out— when he had time.
The main doors of the house were open. Across the broad hallway Callaghan could see the April sun shining on the lawn, tinting the rhododendron bushes. The sight was cheerful. He wondered why people lived in cities, then concluded that the people who lived in the country were probably bored with it. He thought it was an easy matter to become bored with anything. He thought he was bored with Lionel. He wondered if it would be possible to become bored with Leonore. The thought intrigued him.
