Chapter 1 The Contract is Complete
The financial projection froze on the ballroom screen, its last column still showing the cost of delay.
I was halfway through the plan that could save Nelson Holdings from a hostile takeover when Liam cut me off.
“That’s enough, Ivy.”
Whispers spread through the hundreds of investors and socialites. Several had flown in because I promised them a rescue plan.
I lowered the microphone while Liam crossed the stage without looking at me, a dark velvet box in his hand.
My box.
It held the Nelson Star, the oversized diamond passed down to the family’s matriarchs for generations. Eleanor had shown it to the press that afternoon and told them it would go on my finger.
But he walked right past me.
He stopped in front of Chloe Vance, his first love, in the front row. He dropped to one knee. The spotlight swung onto him, and gasps rose around the room.
I checked the ballroom clock.
*Thirty seconds left on the clock.*
“Chloe,” Liam said into the microphone. “I was a fool to let you go. This ring was always meant for you.”
He opened the box. The Nelson Star caught the lights as Chloe covered her mouth and waited just long enough for the nearest cameras to focus. Then she offered him her hand.
Applause broke out before the ring reached her knuckle, and half the room turned toward me to catch the humiliation.
Liam finally looked at me. “Ivy, I’m not a monster. I know this is difficult.” His softer voice still carried through the speakers.
He crooked two fingers, calling me closer.
“You’ve been loyal, in your own way, so I have an offer. The official engagement is over.”
His two fingers stayed raised. “You can stay as Chloe’s assistant and support her quietly. If you behave, our private arrangement can continue.”
Chloe kept her hand raised to admire the ring. When she glanced at me, she smiled and shifted her purse off the empty chair beside her, leaving it available for her new assistant.
The second hand moved again.
*Five. Four. Three.*
Three years of smiles, rehearsed concern, and late-night strategy sessions came down to one final second on a ballroom clock.
*Two. One.*
The last second belonged to me.
*Zero.*
The contract was complete.
I unclipped my magnetic name badge. In the silence after his offer, the click carried to the front row.
The badge read: *Ivy Stewart, Special Advisor to the CEO*. Eleanor had kept my real authority off the company chart.
I placed the badge on the lectern.
“Mr. Nelson, my services are no longer required.”
I left the stage at an ordinary walking pace. People moved aside, still waiting for tears or a scene, and a dozen phones followed me all the way to the ballroom doors.
Outside the ballroom, cold air cut through the heat left by the stage lights.
I opened an email draft prepared weeks earlier and checked the time once more. It was addressed to Liam’s mother, Eleanor Nelson.
The message was brief.
*Subject: Contractual Obligation Fulfilled.*
*Dear Mrs. Nelson,*
*As of 9:00 PM tonight, my three-year term under our agreement is complete. Please initiate the final payment of fifty million dollars to the designated Swiss account.*
*Sincerely,*
*Ivy Stewart*
I hit send.
At the curb, my phone vibrated with a secure message from a private Swiss bank.
*Transfer complete. Balance: $50,000,000.00.*
This time I smiled.
I removed the untraceable SIM card reserved for Liam, the only number he had used when he wanted me available without a company record.
I snapped it between my fingers and dropped both pieces into a storm drain.
His number went with them.
