My legs gave out halfway through the forest.
One moment I was walking, forcing one foot in front of the other with sheer stubbornness, and the next I was falling. Kael caught me before I hit the ground, his arm hooking around my waist with practiced ease.
"I can walk," I said, but I didn't believe it. My voice came out breathless and weak.
"No, you can't." His tone left no room for argument. Before I could protest further, he swept me up into his arms like I weighed nothing. "Stop being stubborn."
"I'm not being…" I started, but the look he gave me made the words die in my throat.
