the orphan girl
It was Monday morning.
I was still sleeping peacefully when the sound of my alarm woke me up.
Checking the time, I saw that it was five o'clock in the morning.
I quickly knelt beside my bed and said a brief prayer, which had always been part of my daily routine.
Today was the day I would be starting at my new school, and I didn't want to be late or keep Uncle Desmond waiting.
I went into the kitchen, washed the dishes, and arranged everything neatly before checking the meal timetable.
Today's breakfast was toast and scrambled eggs.
I quickly prepared the meal and set the dining table.
After cleaning the entire house, I checked the time again.
It was almost half past six.
"Oops! Time is really flying today," I muttered as I hurried to my room to take my bath.
After bathing, I applied my body cream and wore my new school uniform—a white shirt and a high-waisted skirt. It fit me perfectly.
"What time did you wake up today?" Uncle Desmond asked as I came downstairs.
"Good morning, Sir. How was your night?" I greeted respectfully, kneeling.
"It was fine. Don't you think you're overworking yourself?"
"How, Sir?"
"For you to have cleaned the whole house already, you must have woken up much earlier than usual."
"I didn't want to be late for school."
"Just be careful not to overwork yourself."
"I will, Sir. Where's Aunty?"
"She's already left for work. She called you several times, but you didn't answer."
"Oh! I was in the bathroom then."you
"Have your breakfast quickly so we can leave."
"What about you, Sir?"
"I've already packed mine. I'll eat when I get to the office," he replied, showing me his packed lunch.
"Okay, Sir."
I finished my breakfast in less than ten minutes.
"That was fast," he remarked.
"I don't want to be late for school."
Since I had packed my school bag the previous day, I simply picked it up and followed him outside.
"Let's go," Uncle Desmond said.
We got into the car, and the driver drove out of the compound.
Less than ten minutes later, we arrived at Campbell International School.
The school was even more beautiful than my former one.
After getting out of the car, Uncle Desmond led me to the proprietor's office.
"Good morning, Desmond," a young man around Uncle Desmond's age greeted.
"Hi, Dennis. This is the little sister I told you about—Mide."
"Oh! Mide, how are you?"
"I'm fine, Sir."
"Mide, this is the proprietor of the school and also my friend. If you need anything, feel free to meet him."
"Okay, Sir."
"Are you ready for the entrance examination?" Mr. Dennis asked.
"Yes, Sir."
"Alright. Just a second."
He picked up the intercom.
"Please come to my office."
Less than a minute later, a middle-aged man entered.
"Good morning, Sir."
"Good morning, Mr. Habib. This is our new student, Mide. Please take her for the entrance examination."
"Yes, Sir. Please come with me."
I quickly followed him.
We entered a large examination hall where ten other students were already seated.
There were four boys and six girls, all waiting to write the entrance examination.
We were directed to different seats, and mine happened to be close to a girl.
She smiled at me briefly, and I smiled back.
Soon, the question papers were distributed.
To me, the questions were quite easy.
Within twenty minutes, I had finished.
After checking my answers carefully, I submitted my script.
While I waited outside, the girl who had sat near me came over.
"How was the exam? Are you new here? You finished so quickly. You must be a genius."
"I'm new here. The questions were quite simple."
"I'm Tessy. That's my English name. My dad is Nigerian, while my mum is British. Dad was transferred back to Nigeria, and I decided to come with him because we're very close."
I smiled.
"She's quite talkative," I thought.
"You haven't told me your name."v
"Oh, I'm Mide..."
"Mide, let's go. Your result is out," Mr. Habib interrupted.
I smiled at Tessy before following him.
When we entered the office, I was surprised to see Uncle Desmond still there.
"We're done with the examination, Sir," Mr. Habib said as he handed a sheet of paper to Mr. Dennis.
Mr. Dennis carefully looked through it before smiling broadly.
"Excellent!"
"How did she perform?" Uncle Desmond asked.
"Exceptionally well. This is the first time anyone has scored one hundred percent in our entrance examination."
"One hundred percent?"
"Exactly."
"Wonderful. Keep this up and continue making me proud."
"I won't disappoint you, Sir."
"With this result, she'll be placed directly into Class Two."
"Perfect."
Uncle Desmond stood up.
"I'll leave her in your care. If she needs anything, please let me know."
"Of course."
"I'm getting late for work. Enjoy your first day at school, Mide."
"Thank you, Sir."
Mr. Dennis handed me a document.
"Take this to the secretary. She'll give you everything you'll need."
"Thank you, Sir."
Go
I knocked on the secretary's office door.
A beautiful lady welcomed me inside.
"Good morning, Ma. Mr. Dennis asked me to give you this."
She collected the paper and smiled.
"So you're our new genius."
She walked to a cupboard and brought out a small TV suitcase.
"Everything you'll need is inside. Follow me."
I followed her to Class Two.
The teacher was already teaching.
"Excuse me."
"Yes, Ma?"
"We have a new student."
"A new student again?" a boy at the back muttered before immediately becoming quiet.
"This is your new classmate. I hope you'll all make her feel welcome."
"Yes, Ma," the class chorused.
"Introduce yourself."
"Hello, everyone. My name is Ademide Adams, but you can call me Ade or Mide."
"You may sit beside that girl in the third row."
As I sat down, I heard a familiar voice.
"Hi... we meet again."
It was Tessy.
I smiled.
After the secretary left, Miss Rhoda continued her lesson.
I enjoyed every bit of it.
When she asked questions, I answered most of them correctly, which impressed her.
The next period was Mathematics—my favourite subject.
Mr. Mark's lesson on algebraic expressions was so interesting that I wished it wouldn't end.
After two more subjects, it was finally break time.
"Finally! My back aches," Tessy complained.
I simply smiled and continued reading my notes.
"Don't you ever get tired of reading?" she asked, snatching my notebook.
"No. Please give it back."
"No! Don't be such a bookworm."
"A bookworm?"
"Yes. You read too much."
V
"And that's my problem," I laughed.
"It's break time. Let's explore the school."
"I brought snacks."
"So did I. But since it's our first day, let's walk around."
"Alright."
As we walked, Tessy told me funny stories about her life abroad.
"Hi, newbies!"
Two girls from our class approached us.
"I'm Kemi, and this is Taiwo."
"I'm Tessy, and this is my friend, Mide."
"It's nice meeting you. We admired how active you both were in class, and we'd like to be your friends."
"You're welcome," I smiled.
"Would you mind showing us around the school?"
"We'd love to."
Soon, the four of us were chatting happily.
I couldn't believe I had made three friends on my very first day.
Before long, break was over, and classes continued until closing time.
We all said goodbye as our drivers arrived.
Tessy offered me a ride, but I politely declined since Uncle Desmond's driver was coming for me.
After waiting about five minutes, he arrived.
"Good afternoon, Sir."
"How are you, lucky girl?"be
"I'm fine, Sir. But why do you call me lucky girl?"
"Because opportunities like this don't come often."
"You're right. I just pray I never disappoint them."
"Not only that. Pray you never get on Madam's bad side."
"What do you mean?"
"Nothing. You'll understand with time."
I kept thinking about his words throughout the journey home.
After getting home, I changed my clothes, took a shower, ate some Golden Morn for lunch, tidied the house, and started preparing dinner.
"Finally," I sighed, looking at my wristwatch.
"It'll soon be seven."
"Uncle and Aunty should be home soon."
I decided to rest for a while before doing my assignment.
Before I knew it, I had fallen into a light sleep.
"Mide... be careful. Whatever you see here, don't tell anyone," a mysterious voice whispered in my dream.
I immediately sprang up and looked around.
There was no one.
"Another strange dream..." I whispered.
"What could it possibly mean?"
