This surreal scene didn’t last long because the water evaporated quickly; by the time I reached the animal and plant inspection post at the South Australian border the road was dry, and I hadn’t seen any animals for 40 or 50 kilometres. I had four apples with me, and since they had to be destroyed before crossing the border I put two into the bin and ate the other two leaning on the kangaroo bar fitted to the front of the ute.
