Chapter 4:The lost DOG

After briefly going through the odds of the mission, Ricardo and Astrid started their investigation. They were looking for a person who would match their description of a DOG inhiding: the person would live a concealed life andher neighbourhood wouldhave experienced a few religious crises due to an unleashing ofher powers. Theyhad found 22 people in a month who matched the depiction, but after further search, they found nothing on the suspect. This went on for months, far longer than any mission should have.

“Why does this keephappeningy It is so frustrating that every single research takes us back to base one. I am sure that shehas seen me, because a couple weeks back, I felt a presence searching me whilst I was taking a walk. If it is so easy to find me, why can‟t I findher?” Ricardo shouted in annoyance after heading to another dead end.

Astrid sat on the couch, looking at him pitifully. She sighed and tapped on the spot beside her, indicating Ricardo should sit next to her.

With heavy breaths,he crashed on the couch.

Surprisingly,he laid his head on her lap and in his calmest voice, he said:

“I know I'm behaving like a nervous wreck, but I‟ve never been on an operation that took me round like this. I don‟t know what to do anymore...”

“It's okay. Firstly , stop trying to do everything yourself. I'm here for you, so let me help! And secondly, stop stressing and start pondering. Since you‟ve felt a presence around you before, it could be her trying to read your mind. Maybe after getting the information she needed, she changed course. Now let‟s also change course. Let‟s look for someone who recently moved out of a religious-crisis inflicted area and is living an honest and open life. The person should also be a strong member of the church. That would be the perfect disguise for someone who knew about our plan,” Astrid said, stroking his head.

“What would I be without you by my side ?”he asked, sitting up, with his hand on her face.

“you would be a DOG without a mate and an FBI agent with no idea on how to track down Chinese spies” she replied.

He smiled for a while and then pecked her on the lips. They spent the night hanging out, taking a break from the work.

The next day, they started their new plan. Eventually, they found two women who fitted the description perfectly: Selena Daisy and Helen Fitzburg. They were both strong members of The Children of Christ Embassy in Michigan City. So, one of them had to be the lost DOG.

On the appointed day, Astrid and Ricardo arrived at Michigan and attended the church that they were to spy on. As they got there, they noticed that Selene and Helen started to behave weird. Before long, Helen ran out of the church as if she was trying to run away.

Immediately, Astrid and Ricardo went after her.They caught her outside, trying to escape through a spirit portal. They held her down until she Finally stopped fidgeting and promised to talk.

“Where do you want to go, Alisha ? Aren‟t you tired of running and hiding? Instead of facing your problems, you run away, leaving everything behind. you left Alex behind and everyday he yearns for you. At least, come back for his sake ” Ricardo said to her.

“I can‟t come back. It‟s not as easy as it seems. Only Alex understands why I cannot return” Alinah answered.

Abruptly, their conversation was interrupted by the sound of two swords clanging. They turned to see Astrid and Selene in combat. They had both transformed to their true form, exposing that Selene was a demon. Demons and DOGs always fought because the former saw the latter as traitors. Astrid overpowered Selene and in a flash, she diced her head off. She began to walk away confidently, thinking she had just killed her first demon, but the headless demon stood up and held Astrid‟s neck from behind, trying to snap it with her arm.

Ricardo ran towards her and separated her from Selene‟s grip. Alisha could have used this chance to run away but the inner DOG in her wouldn‟t let her. She stretched out her hand and a sword appeared. She vanished and quickly appeared behind the demon. She stabbed her in the spine, causing an instant death.

“That‟s how you kill a demon. By stabbing it in the spine,” Alisha said, looking over her shoulder.

“Thanks, but why would you save me when you had a chance to run away ?” Astrid asked, as confused as she was concerned.

“The way Ricardo looked whenhe saw you getting attacked touched my heart. My conscience wouldn‟t let me live if I abandoned you at your time of need. Besides, Ricardo has been your guardian angel for a while now, so I wanted to relive him of his duty today,” Alisha said with a smile.

“how did you know that ? Only Alexander and Lucianato know that I‟ve been stalking Astrid for a long time before we met,” Ricardo shrieked.

“Can we talk about this back at hQ ?” Astrid asked.

“Let's go” Alinah nodded.

They disappeared from that scene immediately.

Not long after they left, a group of gruesome looking demons flew in and rushed at the dead body of Selene, devouring it and ripping it with their teeth and claws. That would have been a horrid sight for humans but fortunately; they can‟t see it... or can they ?

“Alisha, you are a disgrace to what we stand for. Firstly , you tarnish the image of the DOGs on Earth by joining a secret cult and then you made things worse by running away. you didn‟t come back for a hundred years. you left Alex for a hundred years. What manner of sin did you commit that the rest of us haven‟t seen ? Why couldn‟t you come back and face your penalty ?” Commander Asphalt asked in all seriousness.
