Chapter1
Sophia Patel wiped her forehead as she focused on her new artwork, a colorful painting depicting the skyline of New York City. Her tiny studio flat was filled with paintings, brushes, and incomplete works. In the midst of all the disorder, Sophia found tranquility, enveloped in her imaginative realm. Right as Sophia was putting the finishing touches on her painting, her phone started ringing. She paused, aware that it could be another debt collector. However, she answered, hoping for a sign of positive developments. "Sophia, this is Angela calling from the gallery. I have some unfortunate news. We are unable to provide the solo exhibition we talked about. The proprietor desires an artist with more recognition." Sophia felt a heavy weight in her chest. This marked her third refusal in the current month. While she wanted to quit, her love for art fueled her determination to continue. After ending the call, Sophia noticed the pile of bills that were left unpaid on her kitchen counter. She needed a quick solution. That was when she noticed the advertisement: "Rich businessman seeking companionship. Ample recompense. Confidentiality guaranteed." Sophia paused for a moment, but ultimately her financial difficulties triumphed. Submitting her application, she was hoping for a miracle. Unaware, she was on the brink of a life-altering transformation. Sophia's concentration was interrupted once more by the ringing of her phone. She paused, debating whether to respond or not. However, she felt compelled to grab it. "Is your name Sophia Patel?" inquired a calm, deep voice. "Yes, I am," Sophia answered, feeling her heart beating fast. This is Lucas Ross. I have received the application you submitted for the companion role. Your creativity has caught my attention, I must admit. Sophia's thoughts were running wild. Is that Lucas Ross? The billionaire? Although she was familiar with him, she never expected to engage in conversation with him. Sophia thanked Mr. Ross, attempting to sound professional. "I'd prefer if you could address me as Lucas. I would love to see you face to face. Tomorrow evening, at 7 o'clock, come to my penthouse. We will go over the specifics." Sophia's instincts were warning her, but she ultimately prioritized her financial struggles. She consented to interacting with him. After ending the call, Sophia felt a chill run down her back. What had she just gotten involved in? The following night, Sophia stood outside Lucas's penthouse, her heart racing. After inhaling deeply, she entered the room. She was amazed by the lavish interior. Lucas Ross, even to a greater extent. Tall, dark, and handsome, with striking blue eyes that appeared to look straight into her soul. "Hello, Sophia," greeted Lucas with a calm, velvety tone. I have to admit, you look even more stunning in person than in your photos. Sophia blushed, sensing a flutter in her chest. She attempted to dismiss it as just a crush, but in her heart, she recognized it was something deeper Lucas indicated the elegant dining table adorned with exquisite fine china and sparkling crystal glasses. "What do you want, Sophia?" "Want to grab dinner and drinks?" Sophia paused, sensing she was a bit out of her depth. "Only water, thank you." Lucas lifted one eyebrow. H2O? "Is that all?" Sophia nodded, attempting to look casual. "Yes, that's everything I require." Lucas grinned, the corners of his eyes creasing. "All right then. It is water." While he filled her glass, Sophia looked around the penthouse. It was even grander than she had pictured. "Should we start focusing on work?" Lucas inquired, speaking softly and calmly. Sophia agreed with a little nod and sipped her water. "Yes, sure." Lucas gave her a folder that had the contract inside. Sophia looked over the contract, her eyes widening as she understood the scope of the agreement. "One month? I am unsure if I am capable of doing that. I am committed to my family obligations..." Lucas's face showed determination. I have looked at other possibilities, but after seeing you, my heart has picked you, Sophia. Sophia shivered as his intense gaze sent chills down her spine. "Sure... Can I please make a few phone calls?" Lucas gave a nod and requested, "Please make them right here, right now." Sophia paused, experiencing a feeling of discomfort coming over her. "Is it possible for me to have a little privacy?" Lucas lifted one eyebrow. "Okay, I'll take my leave. But do it quickly." He spun around to depart, his broad shoulders fading out of sight. Sophia breathed out heavily, experiencing a combination of comfort and anxiety. She promptly called her concerned parents and her friend, Rachel, who had assisted her in locating the companion ad, to calm their fears. Hello, Rach. It's me. "I'm in a tight spot," Sophia whispered urgently. I wasn't aware that it had been an entire month... I am unsure if I can accomplish this. Rachel's voice provided comfort over the phone. "Everything will be okay, Soph. Just keep in mind that it's just for the time being. And you might come across some motivation for your creativity too." Sophia grinned slightly, feeling a little improved. "Perhaps you are correct." "Thank you, Rach." After she ended the call, Lucas returned, making his presence impossible to ignore. "Are you pleased?" Sophia gave a nod, still feeling a little flustered. "Yes, I appreciate it.” Lucas nodded slightly, softening his facial expression a bit. "Hmm. I will show you to the guest room where you will be staying for the night," he stated. Sophia followed him, still feeling a bit shocked by the sudden turn of events. The opulent guest room featured a cozy bed and a marble bathroom. Sophia experienced a small sense of discomfort with the excessive luxury surrounding her. The next day, Sophia woke up feeling uneasy. She had difficulty sleeping as she couldn't stop thinking about what she just got herself into. After getting dressed, Sophia visited Lucas in his private sitting room where she found him enjoying coffee and reading the newspaper. He greeted her with a "Good morning" while lifting his gaze towards her. "Did you sleep well?" he asked. Sophia paused, uncertain of how to reply. Before she could respond, Lucas inquired, "What is going on with your mother?" Surprise made Sophia's eyes widen. "What do you mean....? Lucas's face took on an apologetic look. "I apologize for eavesdropping on your phone call yesterday evening. I didn't intend to eavesdrop." Sophia experienced a combination of feelings: surprise, puzzlement, and a touch of apprehension. However, Lucas's soft tone made her feel relaxed. "It's fine," she stated, inhaling deeply. "My mother suffers from a long-term medical condition. She requires daily medication and a surgical procedure to control her condition." Lucas's demeanor became grave. "I apologize, Sophia. I was completely unaware." After a short break, he said, "I will handle your mother's expenses once I return from my journey. And here, hold onto this for the time being." He gave her a bulky envelope stuffed with money. "Purchase the medication that she requires." Tears filled Sophia's eyes as she reached for the envelope. Her family had never received such an offer of assistance before. A flicker of hope sparked within her.
