Chapter 1: The First Day
William Wonavilla Hostel, one of the most prominent and old hostel in United Kingdom greeted a stoic faced figure as he stood gazing at its inside . Despite his attempts to avoid unnecessary attention right now , he had already caught eyes of quite a few .
It was only to be expected of course . After all , no one else had silver hair like him. He shoved his hands in pocket exhaling as he proceeded to wait in line outside the junior dormitory like several others .
"Next " A women's voice vibrated through air as all held their ears to block the abrasive voice . She quickly worked towards issuing IDs as the line kept moving .
"Sheesh..! Can she speak any louder ?" A boy standing behind him remarked .
"Of course she can ! From the looks of it , the voice appears quite natural to her so to answer your question , yes." Another knitted jaw guy chuckled.
He narrowed his eyes at individual questioning whether it was a humour or the guy genuinely didn't comprehend that it was completely rhetorical . But then again, it had nothing to do with him so he decided to turn back .
All of sudden he saw that a girl was admitted without even joining the line.
"What ?" He exclaimed before he even realized it .
"Surprised , are you ? " The boy behind him tapped him on shoulder .
"Yes !" He spoke at last after much conflict over whether he should initiate a conversation or not .
"My name is Axel . You see ! Kate , that girl is Ambassador's daughter so .." Axel said in manner of explanation.
"Is that supposed to be an explanation ?" He stared at him at which Axel just chuckled.
"So you really don't know how this hostel works , do you ?"
"I have just arrived here .I see no rational reason as to why anyone would assume that I should know anything concerning this place !" His face wore a bitter smile as if he had already started to hate the place .
"My apologises then , mate ! So let me tell you all about this place . But before that ,.." He smiled. "Tell me your name !"
"Max Ryder!"
..
A month lapsed like dust in whirlwind . His hand embraced thick cover of an old book as he skimmed through it and then with a deep sigh, he put it down "Again! Too much fiction ."
"Seriously! Not even this. You didn't even like Twilight and..." Axel raised his eyebrows.
"Don't bring thay book unless you like to read a story full of inconsistencies and plot holes ! " Max retorted.
"Fine ! Fine ! You know I heard that from tomorrow our school is starting the race ." Axel turned towards him.
"Oh! Good for you . Have fun then ! Too dreary for me"
"It is horse racing actually!" Max quickly perked up his ears but he quickly restrained his excitement from showing up .
"Well then again such things are dreary for you right ? What a shame! I suppose Brian will have to do for now .."Axel rose up mumbling .
Max narrowed his eyes at him. It was quite clear that Axel was trying to abet him to come out yet he saw no reason to keep the pretense too as he knew quite well that this was probably the most interesting thing to happen in Wonavilla so far .
On his first day , the only thing going on in his mind was to avoid being drawn into any social network and he was quite assured of its accomplishment until he was confronted by none other than Kate , the privelleged girl who had more liberties than any other junior year .
"What is your deal , kid? Why are you always wrapped around your book? If you are trying to go for a loser look , you are certainly nailing it " She mocked him.
"Your point." He raised my eyebrows calmly.
"My point! You ask my point. Well! people like you spoil the atmosphere we contrive. So either start engaging as you are offered so kindly by others or leave . You don't deserve to be here ." She smirked.
"My humble apologises , miss" He bowed and then burst into laughter as she glared at him.
"Were you expecting that response ! Oh my ! Then let me bring you back to reality .I couldn't care less about you or anyone here . I would certainly agree to one thing though . I most definitely shouldn't be in this damn boorish place locked with apes like you ." He smiled walking right past her aghast face .
That was the only intense incident that took place for which he was quite thankful since he was quite aware that being involved in events like these on recurring basis would only bring unwanted attention on him and he was most definitely not looking for a fight . Even if this was a boring and dismal place, he would rather spend his days in peace and isolation than being involved in futile arguments.
But it seemed like Axel , the very first guy and the only person with whom he had interacted since arrival seemed to longing for a friendship so after much persuasion, he heeded . Even though he couldn't wait to get out of this hostel, he was still a bit glad to have a companion, as terrible as his taste in books and music was.

................................................................
A large flock of teenagers streched around like an outlying curve in central stadium eagerly awaiting the race that was about to take place.
"Finally ! You know how hard it was to keep this seat reserved!" Axel held his hand on waist looking at Max who sat down in it carefree.
"Must have sucked I suppose!" He facepalmed himself.
"You aren't even sorry , are you ?" Axel complained.
Each term , horse races took place almost as long passed down tradition within Wonavilla in which seats were reserved for day scholars (students coming from outside) , something which boarding students didn't have except for few cases like Kate .
"The whole concept doesn't make sense. Logically if I am paying more fees, then I should have my seat reserved instead of them who aren't even living here ! So of course I came here without any expectation of getting a seat ." He crossed his arms gazing at jockeys which were getting ready.
"You really love to think logically all the time , don't you Max ? Well ! Consider this . School considers the factor that since horse races are conducted on Saturdays , which is an off day so it would be hard for students coming from outside to get here before us since we are already in proximity " Axel pushed up his glasses .
"School board would love to hire you one day! I can most definitely see that ." He smirked at which Axel sighed " Well ! We better keep our eyed glued there . Race is about to start ."
"Right! " That was the only reason he had come here so early as 7: 00 am on holiday. There was simply no way he wasn't going to use his skills to predict the winner and enjoy that thrill.
The race began with red flare in sky as there was a loud cheer from all three sides of stadium surrounding the track.
"I can bet Jefferson is going to take this one ." Christopher smirked .
"Based on what assumption?" Max glanced at him.
"Based on his skill ! What else ." As expected, an arbitrary response . He calmly noted down the movements of each rider before they disappeared into tunnel , as his mind raced to analyse every bit of clue.
"It is going to be the yellow rider! That is my bet ." He rose up from his seat ignoring yelling noises of people behind him who struggled to watch the race .
"5 pounds then." Christopher raised his eyebrows.
"Sounds good !"
"Are you sure about this, Max? You are going to lose 5 pounds unnecessarily if you are wrong ." Axel turned to him.
"Yeah ! See ! He is the first one out ." He pointed his hand towards the yellow rider chased by others as Axel and Christopher rubbed their eyes in disbelief at increasing pace of yellow rider leaving others in dust .
"Told you ! Everything is deducible . Everything is predictable given enough data in this universe ." Max closed his eyes shoving his hands in pocket proudly.
"Ya ! About that , your guy fell down just now from horse , Max ." Axel shook him at which Max opened his eyes nonplussed.
"Everything is predictable given enough data . ..Oh ! How do you come up with this crap? Hand over money " Christopher and his friends giggled .
Max remained still for a moment as if unable to comprehend what had just taken place.
"Max ! Max !" Axel waved his hands in front of his friend .
"Oh sorry! Here is your five pound , Christy ! " He quickly threw a coin at his head as Christopher fell down stumbling on chairs .
"Why you ...."
"No time to talk ! I will see you whenever, Axel . "Max scampered rushing through thr crowd like a skitty cat .
"What was that about? " Axel wondered as he tried to assuage the mad Christopher while trying to contain his laughter at what just happened.
....
A bleak ambience wreathed him as his eyes gazed at ground . Unable to analyse, he crouched down to see the dust strewed on edges , proportions falling in scrap one by one from the rock wall.
"There is no direct evidence of course .The only apparent odour is of sand left by horse's hoof . The yellow rider was on track near the edge exactly where sand could have been easily put diffused with any material. But then .." Max rose up brushing dust from his pants .
"That could have taken care of only one rider and wouldn't betting on the possibility that targeted rider to have track set near edge be too convenient situation especially for someone who is probably trying to fix horse races ! I suppose I would need to test it in lab in order to be sure .. " He checked his pocket realising that he didn't have any sort of test tube to collect the sand .
Stupid move! How could he forget such a simple detail ? In all his excitement to prove himself correct on the possibility that someone has fixed this race , he didn't even consider the essential requirements to accomplish that goal itself .
"Well ! I suppose I would have to just wait for dusk." It wasn't that he couldn't find tube right now but the possibility of being caught . After all , it was prohibited area except for janitors so he knew quite well that it would be best to wait for evening when they will be engaged in classroom cleaning, far away from the spot . Since the race was finished just now , the possibility of encountering them coming inside tunnel was quite high, either for cleaning or simply for collecting track material .
One of the essential aspects of smooth investigation is to remain secret from authorities and , he had full intention to oblige to that principle . At least until he finds the Fixer !
Soon as he emerged from tunnel, warm sunlight greeted his face as silver hair brushed against his eyes blinding him for a second .
"It is only the start of May and you are already so bright so early ." He facepalmed himself turning his eyes away from sky .
"So what were you doing in that tunnel, Max Ryder?" A voice greeted him as his eyed widened grimacing his reality . Out of all people to discover him, it had be her.
Kate Summer!
