Chapter 6 — The Trap Behind the Sterling Gates

1413 Words
Fifteen minutes later... Sterling Group Pavilion appeared The massive structure rose from the landscape like a monument built to display power and influence. Glass. Steel. Black stone. Every line of architecture represented wealth, precision, and control. The headquarters of the Sterling empire. The place where generations of the family name had been protected. Above the main entrance, the Sterling Wolf insignia shone beneath the falling rain. A elegant silver crescent surrounded the head of a powerful wolf. The symbol had always represented strength, legacy, family. But today, standing before it, Ava felt something different. A warning. Luxury vehicles filled the executive parking area. Security cameras rotated from every corner of the property. Uniformed guards moved through the entrance with practiced discipline. Employees entered and exited the building carrying tablets, briefcases, and coffee cups. Everything appeared normal, professional, safe. Nothing suggested danger. Nothing suggested that she had walked into a trap. Ava parked beneath the visitor canopy and switched off the engine. For several seconds, she did not move. The rain continued falling around her. Her reflection stared back at her from the windshield. A woman who looked exactly the same as she had that morning. The same face. The same appearance. But inside... Everything had changed. "This is just a conversation." She whispered the words. "If anything feels wrong..." She reached for her handbag. "I leave." It was the only promise she could make herself. Ava stepped out of the car. The rain immediately touched her skin. She pulled her coat closer and walked toward the entrance. The security checkpoint stood directly beyond the main doors. A guard stepped forward with a polite expression. "Good afternoon, ma'am." "Good afternoon." "May I help you?" "I'm here to meet someone." "Certainly." The guard looked down at his tablet. "May I have your reservation code?" Ava hesitated. "I don't have one." The guard glanced back at the screen. "An employee access card?" "No." His expression remained professional, but his answer was firm. "I'm sorry, ma'am, but entry into Sterling Group Pavilion requires prior authorization." Ava expected this. Still, disappointment settled inside her chest. For a moment, she considered calling Kael. One phone call would solve everything. The guard would let her in. Someone would come to meet her. Everything would become simple. But then she remembered the message. Come alone. Her fingers tightened around her phone. "I'm meeting someone who asked me to come." The guard looked uncertain. "I'm afraid I still need confirmation." Ava lowered her gaze. Then she unlocked her phone. Her wallpaper appeared. A photograph from their vacation at Moon Lake. Kael stood behind her, his arms wrapped around her waist while she laughed at something he had whispered into her ear. It was one of the happiest moments of her life. The guard looked at the screen. Recognition appeared immediately. His entire posture changed. His eyes widened slightly. "Oh..." He straightened. "I'm terribly sorry, Miss Ava." The younger guards nearby noticed his reaction and immediately became more attentive. "I didn't recognize you." He gave an embarrassed smile. "I only joined the security division last week." His voice became more respectful. "You are Mr. Ashford's fiancée." Ava offered a gentle smile. "It's alright." "There was no way you could have known." The guard nodded quickly. "Thank you for understanding." He turned toward the control booth. The security gates unlocked with a quiet mechanical sound. The massive iron gates slowly opened. "Welcome to Sterling Group Pavilion, Miss Ava." "Thank you." She nodded politely and walked inside. The moment Ava crossed through the gates... The feeling changed. She could not explain it. Nothing visible had happened. No alarms. No warning. No obvious sign of danger. Yet something felt wrong. The silence was the first thing she noticed. This was not the silence of a peaceful corporate campus. It was the silence of a place that had been abandoned. The courtyard ahead was unusually empty. No executives walking between buildings. No assistants rushing around with tablets. No employees talking on their phones. No construction workers. No voices. Nothing. Ava slowed her steps. One side of the property was surrounded by temporary construction fencing. Portable floodlights stood inactive despite the approaching storm. Stacks of folded chairs sat beneath waterproof covers. Maintenance equipment remained scattered across the pavement. It looked as though work had stopped suddenly. Not completed. Not delayed. Stopped. As if everyone had left in the middle of something. Her phone vibrated. Ava froze. She looked down. The countdown was still active. 00:03:00 Three minutes. Exactly three minutes remained. Her breath became shallow. The sender knew she had arrived. Not approximately. Not exactly by chance. Ava slowly looked around the courtyard. No one was there. Only rain. Only empty walkways. Only the distant sound of thunder moving across the city. A cold wind passed through the courtyard. Plastic sheets attached to the construction barriers snapped violently. Ava wrapped her arms around herself. The uneasy feeling she had carried all morning returned stronger than before. Something was wrong. She had known it before she entered. Now she could feel it. She had walked directly into something waiting for her. Ava stood alone in the center of the vast courtyard. Rain fell steadily around her, turning the concrete beneath her feet darker with every passing second. She slowly turned in a circle. The Pavilion was enormous. A symbol of the Sterling family's power. A place where hundreds of people worked every day. Yet now… it felt abandoned No executives hurried between meetings. No assistants crossed the courtyard carrying tablets. No construction workers shouted instructions. No footsteps echoed from nearby buildings. No voices. Only silence. The countdown on her phone continued. 00:02:17 00:02:16 00:02:15 Each second felt louder than the last. Ava swallowed. "Where are you?" Her voice disappeared into the rain. No answer. Only thunder rolling above the city. She looked around again. Whoever had brought her here was close. She could feel it. But where? And why hide? A movement across the courtyard caught her attention. Ava immediately turned. An elderly woman in a faded maintenance uniform stood near one of the storage buildings. She was carefully flattening cardboard boxes and placing them onto a small trolley. For a moment, relief replaced Ava's fear. Finally, someone. Someone who could explain what was happening. Ava hurried toward her. "Excuse me..." The woman looked up. Deep wrinkles covered her weathered face. Her brown eyes met Ava's. Only for a second. Then everything changed. Recognition flashed across the woman's expression. Not confusion. Not curiosity. The woman's hands tightened around the trolley handle. Her eyes quickly moved toward the surrounding buildings, as if checking whether someone was watching them. Then she lowered her voice. "You shouldn't be here." Ava stopped. "What?" The woman's breathing became uneven. "They're watching." Ava frowned. "Who is watching?" But the woman did not answer. She looked frightened. Almost as if even saying the name would put her in danger. "You need to leave." Ava stepped closer. "Wait. Please. I need answers." The woman shook her head. "No." Her voice was barely a whisper. "Not here." Before Ava could ask another question, the cleaner pushed the trolley away quickly. Almost desperately. "Wait!" Ava followed a few steps. "Please!" But the woman never turned back. Within seconds, she disappeared around the corner of another building. Ava remained standing in the rain. Her heartbeat accelerated. "They're watching..." The words repeated in her mind. Who were they? The person sending the messages? Someone inside Sterling Group? Someone connected to her father? Or someone who had been waiting for her long before she arrived? Thunder shook the sky. The storm finally broke completely. Heavy rain poured across the courtyard. Minutes passed. Nothing happened. No mysterious figure appeared. No hidden informant approached her. No explanation came. Only rain. Only silence. The countdown continued. Then… it reached zero. The screen went dark. Ava stared at her phone. A strange disappointment settled over her. Maybe she had been wrong. Maybe someone had created this entire situation simply to frighten her. Maybe the diary, the messages, and the dream had caused her to imagine a danger that did not exist. She released a slow breath. "This was a mistake." The words sounded empty. She turned toward the entrance. She had enough. She would leave. She would go home. She would find another way to uncover the truth. She had barely taken a step— When something behind her made her stop. "What... was that?”
