CHAPTER 1 — THE DREAM THAT REFUSED TO DIE
One sentence was all it took to destroy the love she had spent years bleeding for. She had braced herself for betrayal. She had prepared herself for heartbreak.
But nothing could have prepared her for the words that left his lips.
"I have never loved you."
The words struck Ava with a force far greater than the thunder that ripped across the storm-darkened sky.
For one endless, agonizing heartbeat, she couldn't breathe.
Rain poured without the slightest mercy, drumming relentlessly against cracked stone and rusted iron until the abandoned punishment grounds dissolved into a vast sea of mud. Once, rogues had been dragged there to face judgment. Now, years after the united packs had outlawed such cruelty, the place had become nothing more than a forgotten graveyard of painful memories.
Yet tonight, it felt hauntingly alive.
As though every ghost who had ever suffered within those forsaken grounds had returned to witness her downfall.
A hand clamped tightly around her wrist.
"Move."
The voice was cold.
Utterly unfamiliar.
Ava stumbled helplessly forward as Alpha Kael dragged her through the relentless rain.
Sharp stones ripped into the soles of her bare feet. Thick mud splashed across her soaked white dress. Her knees slammed painfully against the uneven ground each time she lost her footing, yet Kael never slowed his pace.
He didn't even bother to look back.
"Kael..." she gasped, struggling desperately to keep up. "Please... you're hurting me."
There was no answer.
Only the relentless rhythm of the rain.
Fear tightened mercilessly around her chest.
This wasn't the Kael she knew.
The Kael she loved would have stopped the very instant she stumbled. He would have gathered her into his arms without hesitation, apologized for the smallest bruise, and kissed away every tear she shed.
This man continued walking as though she weighed nothing at all.
As though she meant absolutely nothing.
She slowly lifted her tear-filled eyes toward him.
Lightning split across the heavens.
Its ghostly light illuminated the face she had dreamed of waking beside every morning for the rest of her life.
Strong. Handsome. Unyielding.
But his silver eyes...
They were empty. They were not angry. They were not conflicted.
They were simply empty.
As though every trace of love had been completely erased from them.
"I love someone else."
His voice was cruelly calm.
"A woman worthy of standing beside an Alpha."
The words echoed coldly throughout the deserted courtyard.
Ava blinked in stunned disbelief.
"No..."
He continued speaking as though she had never uttered a word.
"She's beautiful, strong, confident”
"The entire werewolf world envies the woman who will become my Luna."
At last, he came to a stop.
Rain streamed steadily down his face.
Water dripped from his dark hair onto the collar of his black coat.
He turned with deliberate slowness to face her.
His gaze traveled from the top of her head to her trembling feet.
Disgust darkened every line of his expression.
"But you..."
A bitter laugh escaped his lips.
"Every time I look at you..."
"I regret the day the Moon Goddess tied our lives together."
The words carved mercilessly through the center of her heart.
Ava stared at him in complete disbelief.
"No."
Her voice trembled uncontrollably.
"You don't mean that."
"I do."
Behind him stood an enormous iron cage.
Its rusted bars stretched upward toward the storm like skeletal fingers. Heavy chains swayed lazily in the wind, their hollow clinking swallowed beneath the distant rumble of thunder.
Time had reduced it to little more than a forgotten monument to cruelty.
Kael walked toward it without the slightest hesitation.
The ancient hinges screamed in protest as he pulled the gate open.
Before Ava could even react—
He shoved her inside.
She crashed violently onto the freezing iron floor.
Pain exploded through her shoulder.
The impact knocked every breath from her lungs.
She scrambled desperately onto her hands and knees just as—
Clang!
The gate slammed shut.
A heavy lock snapped firmly into place.
The sharp metallic sound echoed across the empty courtyard.
"No..."
Ava rushed frantically toward the bars.
Her fingers wrapped desperately around the freezing iron.
"Kael!"
He stood only a few short steps away.
Close enough for her to reach through the bars.
Close enough to save her.
Instead, he looked down at her as though she were something beneath him.
"What have I done?"
Her voice shattered.
"Please... tell me."
For several agonizingly long seconds, he simply stood there watching her cry.
No guilt. No hesitation.
Only contempt.
Then he stepped forward until nothing remained between them except the cold iron bars.
His face hovered only inches from hers.
"You..."
His voice was scarcely more than a whisper.
"...were the greatest mistake of my life."
Before she could speak—
He spat directly into her face.
The warmth of it instantly disappeared beneath the freezing rain.
Ava froze not because of the insult.
Because somewhere deep inside her...
Something quietly broke.
Without another word, Kael turned away.
"No!"
She slammed both hands violently against the iron bars.
"Kael!"
He continued walking without so much as a glance behind him.
"Please!"
Nothing.
"You can't leave me here!"
Only the relentless rain answered her desperate cries.
She shook the cage with every ounce of strength she possessed.
The rusted chains rattled violently, their harsh clamor swallowed by the storm.
"Help!"
Her scream ripped through the night like a wounded cry.
"Please!"
"There has to be someone!"
Thunder answered.
Lightning split the heavens once again.
The rain poured even harder, soaking her hair, her clothes, and every inch of her skin until the bitter cold seeped deep into her bones.
Her voice grew raw and hoarse.
Still she screamed. Still no one came.
The darkness beyond the cage seemed to deepen with every passing second.
The storm swallowed each desperate cry before it could reach anyone.
Then…the rain stopped.
Not entirely, only around the cage.
A terrible silence settled over the deserted courtyard.
Ava's breathing caught painfully in her throat.
She wasn't alone anymore. She felt it long before she saw it.
Someone… or something was watching her slowly… very slowly...
She lifted her head.
Beyond the curtain of falling rain, deep within the darkness between the abandoned buildings...
A pair of crimson eyes opened.
They glowed with an unnatural and ancient brilliance.
They were watching her without the slightest blink.
Ava's heart seemed to stop beating.
The eyes never moved.
Never spoke. Never attacked.
They simply watched.
As though waiting for the precise moment destiny would finally reach her.
Then—
A deep growl rolled through the darkness.
Not human. Not entirely wolf.
Something far older, far more terrifying.
The crimson eyes took one slow step forward.
"Do you know why your true mate has been hunting you?"
"Aaaah!"
Ava bolted awake with a terrified scream.
