Kat flared her nostrils as Miss Moon bowed her head as she and Oni reached the dining hall.
“His Majesty is-” Julie, who was waiting by the door entrance, started to say but Kat ignored her and walked in the direction of the massive table. She did not care for her words about Oscar, nor did she wait for herself to be announced in. Everything irritated her about this place, including the people that were put to take care of her. The beautician was the worst.
Kat didn’t like people touching her face on a daily basis just to apply make-up which was funny because when Kat was younger, she used to say that she would hire someone to do her makeup professionally every day. Be careful what you wish for?
Why did she even need make-up anyway? She was inside the castle most of the time and surrounded by mostly staff.
Oscar was with his whor*- Miss Nuwa, Oni had said? He sat at the head of the table and his whor* at his right side. Anthony was seated at his left along with- well the large table was full with mostly men who all stood up when she entered. She tilted her head slightly and was guided to her seat at the other end of the table.
Normally when they dine with the royals or other officials Oscar and Katherine would sit at the center of the table not ends.
Everyone hoisted themselves from their seats as she approached the table, lowering their heads. Everyone except the woman who still sat in her rightful seat by her husband’s side and saw her smirking at her. Kat rolled her eyes but still admired her orange color scarf, stopping a few feet from the rectangle-shaped table. Oscar looked at the woman next to him and muttered something and her eyes widened before she stood up and stared at her. Kat pursed her lips and redirected her eyes to her husband who, muttered to his whor* again and she bent her head.
From her peripheral view, she saw Oscar stretch his hand out, in her direction then at the other end of the long table, indicating for her to be seated. She did not take her seat. And her eyes never left the woman’s face, next to her husband as if daring her to raise her head again but she didn’t in the ten seconds Kat glared at her.
Kat wanted to see if Oscar would have declared her to be beheaded too like his guard.
The men greeted her in unison as she took her seat. Then Oscar followed suit and the others followed. Kat hoped the woman understood her place…she knew she only got away with it because the room was crowded and she wondered what Oscar’s plan was for her next, for her outburst.
“My Queen, this is our selected ten, to be knighted for their bravery in serving our nation with honor,” Oscar gestured to the men seated at the table and looked to her for her response. Kat lifted her goblet and swallowed its contents.
She looked to Nuwa and furrowed her brows and glanced at the familiar face of the guard that was rude to her the day she arrived in this said ‘nation’ and twisted her lips.
“My Queen, have you no words?” Oscar encouraged her in his pretense of being a good husband. Kat glanced around the table at the eight women that were present and saw them smiling- was it at her or with her as encouragement, Kat didn’t know but she felt like throwing up for Oscar as flaunting his woman in front of everyone. Why was she even asked to be here? This was purposely done to make fun of her- to be made a mockery of.
She nodded her head to the server and the girl refilled her goblet and Kat swallowed it again. She saw Oscar’s eyes open wider and Nuwa’s smirk. That’s right whor*- smile as I embarrass myself, she thought as she glared at her.
Kat ignored them as the food was served. Barely eating she concentrated more on her wine and by the end of the meal, Kat was giggling by herself. From her peripheral view, she saw the other women fawning openly towards the guards.
“Oh my gosh she’s such an embarrassment,” she heard the whor* say, and then the others muttered around her.
“I’m the embarrassment? Whor*?” the woman’s jaw dropped and her eyes widened showing her surprise at Kat’s outburst. “I’m the one who has to watch her husband with his- whatever you chose to be referred to,” Kat shouted as she stood up. The glass fell over, spilling its contents but Kat didn’t bother with it. Everyone who was seated stood up except Oscar and Nuwa.
The woman’s face looked stricken as she looked to see if the others had heard even though she knew they did then she looked at Oscar before bending her head.
“Kat-” Oscar stood up saying.
“Kat what? Why am I here?”
“To hon-”
“To the honor the man that was rude to me? The man that you threatened- oh whatever. You have this- this- why am I here Oscar? Just why?” She wasn’t even mad at the Royal guard it was the woman by Oscar’s side. How could he do that?
She saw the man- “Yon!” she shouted as she remembered the name and the man’s hands fisted by his sides with his eyes downcast.
“Yeon, please leave,” Oscar’s silent command was heard.
“No-Yeon,” Kat corrected her pronunciation, “you-” she looked at the other women on the table that certainly couldn’t be royals, for although they were dressed in fine wear, Kat was smart enough to know that the ‘stiffs’ would never be this open and showy towards their affection as these ‘ladies’ were portraying to the guards. “-and the whor*s stay. I’ll leave, clearly, I’m the odd one out,” Kat blabbed as she stepped out of her seat and immediately Anthony was by her side with his hand on her waist and her hand. He guided her to the door, “See Oscar? Your guard is doing your job because you’re busy- with your whor*,” she finished the last part with her voice shrilled.
As she was about to exit the door she turned back, “I’ll wait eagerly to see what you choose to punish me with next, dear husband.”
Katherine did not stumble as she hurried out for her pride wouldn’t let her. She raised her chin haughtily in the air and eyeing Oscar in a hostile manner she stepped out with Anthony quick at her heels. The royal guard did not chase behind her but was simply guiding her to her quarters. He held onto one of her arms in a tight but unharming grip as the handmaid followed behind the wringing her hands.
“Give us a few minutes,” he ordered the maid as they walked in and she stood still just outside the door of her bedroom chamber while Kat walked in without a second glance.
“What was that?” Kat heard the disbelief in his voice but was too intoxicated to even care. She walked further into the room and tried to kick off her shoes but they wouldn’t come off. Glancing down she saw the straps and huffed.
“I don’t want a lecture, Sir. I am trying to think of the good person you are and I would like to hold on to that memory, so don’t lecture me on my behavior, please. Lecture your King for he’s the one embarrassing. He’s embarrassing me, you, his staff, the royals, and this country. I am his wife! I don’t care if the marriage is a sham, he should respect his vows.”
“Your Majesty - that’s the King, you cannot say things like that in his presence.”
“Is that treason coming from his wife? I can’t speak the truth about ‘my husband’ now? Will I be put to death? What a joke. The guards could disrespect me but I can’t- whatever. I bear no ill will towards Yeon for he’s not the problem. Even if Oscar wants to have...er…extramarital activities, which by the way is fine with me,” she waved her hands in the air in front of her chest as she spoke as if to add more meaning to her words, “I just think he should be a bit quieter about it, you know?”
“He is King,” Anthony repeated with a furrow between his brows.
“And who am I?”
Kat pulled the earring from her lobes and threw them on the vanity and sat down on the chair before pulling off the bracelets on her wrists. She was irritated and not in the mood for thoughts of this 'dinner' that Oscar had planned.
“And I am Queen but everyone seems to have forgotten. I am not drunk in case that’s what you’re thinking. I just needed a light buzz to live in this place- it is frustrating to be here…”
“I understand,” he said in a silent voice as he stood behind her. She captured the sober look on his face and she softens a bit. Kat knew the man might care for her but he was loyal to Oscar still.
“I’m sorry. It’s just really difficult…I feel like I’m surrounded by enemies all around me. You’re the only one who seems to care about me. Why did he invite me to- why did he have to flaunt her in front of me with others around to witness?”
She unclipped her hair and rumpled it, bending to unclasp the buckles on her shoes. Looking up she said, “I would ask you for help since you dismissed my maid but would you touch your Queen or would you be losing your headed for that?”
“I just send her in,” Anthony said as he bowed out of the room.
