Chapter 13 When I ask Derek where we’re going to eat, he just gives me an enigmatic wink and says, “You’ll see.” There aren’t many places to eat out in Ashbury. Well, no, that isn’t true. I should say there aren’t many places to dine out—if he wants fast food, he has his pick. But we drive past Burger King, McDonald’s, Wendy’s, and KFC without slowing, then he turns down Temple Avenue as if he’s heading for the interstate. The state capital is only a half hour north of us, and this time of the day, there won’t be much traffic heading into Richmond; most everyone is on the southbound side of the interstate, bumper to bumper, trying to get home.
