After School
The road was getting darker and the streetlights begun to light up one after another. This day sucks. I attended consecutive meetings that covered my whole day. At four, I paid a visit to an old friend in the hospital.
I yawned as I checked the time. It's 7:00 pm and I felt chills despite the fact I am driving my car. I'm going home to the outskirt of the city which takes an hour from the company I am currently working.I decided to take the short cut because it was getting late and I feel terribly hungry.
The road was suddenly devoured by darkness since there were no longer streetlights. I started to have this familiar feeling. It's heavy and mysterious. There's a truck before me that made me less lonely.
I saw an old man crossing the road which made me wonder. There were no residents in this area. What does a person doing in this area?I threw away my curiosity and focused on the way.
I abruptly stepped on the brake and almost yelled when the truck drove over the man as if it was nothing. I heard no sound of crashing though and when I raised my head to look for the man, he was no where to be seen. I held my breath, thinking that I just saw a ghost again.
I was not born with this ability. Being able to see things normal human eyes cannot see is an unending nightmare. This unwanted sixth sense started 15 years ago because of a real life nightmare.
15 years ago (2nd year high school)
The classroom was filled with noise as soon as the teacher steps out. As usual, the boys left the room and roamed in the corridor creating distractions for the other classes.
Maria, Kristine and Jerry dragged their chairs to form a circle and started their gossips. I glanced at Rachel that seemed to look for something funny to do. I wonder who will be her next target. Good luck to that person though. I fetched my sketchbook from my black backpack and added few more details to the art I was working on. It was my own version of Jeff the killer and Ben drowned.
I guessed that the next subject teacher was approaching when the noise dispersed and the sound of her shoes touching the floor echoed in the hall. I looked up from my business and saw the boys racing to seat on their chairs before the teacher comes. After few more seconds, there she was our history teacher with her pink blouse and red skirt. What a terrible sense of fashion.
"Class, since we have surprise visitors that need accommodation I would like you to organize our library for this hour. The librarian will guide you so please cooperate. You are no longer kids so I expect you to behave. You may proceed to the library" With that she left. The boys groaned and I heard countless complains.
"We are here to learn not to fix books" I heard one of them said.
I hate fixing this old books cause the dust makes my throat so dry. Oh no! Here comes my big-mouthed friend who annoys the hell out of me, Cherry. She was indeed annoying but I liked her. My day won't be complete if I won't listen to her nonsense mumblings.
"Hey! Kenny did you hear the rumor? There are vengeful spirits roaming in the old school building and they like studious people with glasses so you better pray before passing by there at night" she whispered in my ear.
"Uh huh" after that, I just ignored her as she mumbled more rumors and gossips. I was studious and wore glassess but they do not call me nerd or geek. Which was the good part. I had really strict parents so I did not have a choice but to do my best in school. That's the bad part.
"So did you find anything interesting?" Cherry asked.
"Na, just boring novels and history books" I answered then she nodded.
"Guys! Attention! The school festival will be tomorrow and we are assigned to prepare the stage so do you mind going home late!" Our class President announced or more like shouted. Rony was our president who swallowed a microphone and a human size speaker. We all complained to the announcement but we cannot do anything about it. I did not like going home late. I told you, I had strict parents.
"Rony, for the 100th time I told you to lower your voice. We are not deaf" that was not the librarian but our literature teacher who happened to pass near the library. Rony only smiled at her and shared a look with his best friend, Hercules.
(6:00 PM)
I looked outside the window and it was getting darker but we were still far from fonish with the decorations. It's my classmates fault for playing around.
"Where are the others? DO YOU MIND HELPING US HERE PEOPLE!!" I heard Cathy shouted. We were seven person left in the room working, Cathy, Cherry, Rachel, Kris, Hercules, Vince and of course me. I wonder where the other guys went to.
Suddenly Bea entered the room and picked a scissor from the table.
"What's that for? Haircut? Just hurry up and call the others here it's getting late" Hercules commanded.
"Partly yes, but it is for summoning a demon. We found a book which contains witchcrafts and other y'know magical things. Just for fun" Bea laughed and ignored the more important thing. She left the room with everyone frustrated.
"Summon a demon my ass, just summon the others and let's finish this crap now!" Vince shouted after Bea. We heard no respond at all.
The room returned in silence when Bea left. Everyone was doing their work seriously. The rain became heavier and we could feel the sudden drop of temperature. I suddenly remembered the weather forecast last night that it will be a sunny day and no low pressure or typhoon was expected. I guess they got it wrong cause what's with this rain.
"AAAAAAA!!!!" A man shouted as if he was being chased by a dog.
"AAAAAAAAA!!!" the others and I shouted in shock only to be followed by Hercules laughters who actually intended to scare us.
Rachel punched her shoulder, "Asshole"
"That was not a bit funny, I thought something a snake appeated" Cathy catching her breath.
"I will definitely write you in my death note" Vince said quite embarrassed for his reaction.
"Do it again and I will drag you to hell!" Cherry shouted at him.
"Me too" Kris shoved her left chest.
"Me three" I uttered and threw him a deadly look.
"Okay, Okay, fine I'm sorry. It was just so quiet so" Hercules said grinning.
"Stop grinning and that's not an excuse!" Rachel threw him a bottle of glue which happened to spill some on his head.
"What.The.Hell " Hercules murmured as he wiped out the sticky glue from his hair.
He chased Rachel for revenge so they were like kids playing. Hercules threw the glue to Rachel but it landed on Kris' face thus making a chaos in the classroom. Vince on the other hand can't stop laughing at them. Hercules was soon being beaten by the two.
They left the room chasing each other but sooner their footsteps suddenly stopped. The room went back to silent state. All I could hear were the faint sound of raindrops and the wall clock ticking.
" Where did those kids go?" Cathy asked to the air and went to the door. She looked around the dark corridor. I just realized the light in the hall was turned off.
"What are those guys doing in Section A's room?" she uttered to herself but we clearly heard it. Cherry went to the door to have a look.
"Is that candle light?" Cherry walked toward the said room. Cathy followed after her. The rest of us decided to follow them too and left the unfinished decorations.
I saw red flame reflected by the room in section A's classroom. Other than our room no other rooms were lighted. I looked back just to see Vince licking his lips and picking on his nose. Yuck. Many of my classmates were immature but that makes the classroom lively and fun.
I wonder where was the duty teacher. No one was checking on us since dusk.
