Mostly Ghostly-short
The halls are empty, lonely, and if I might say, creepy. I wander the halls of the forbidden mall of horrors for what seems like an eternity. I have been dead for a few years now and this place still creeps me out. The empty lobbies with discarded trash, the blood stain of where I died, I shiver. The empty shops that once held life, now dull and abandoned. The ceiling lights are falling down, and people keep coming in here to vandalize. I can’t blame them, this would be a nice place to put graffiti. Spiders have taken over the corners on the walls, making webs so big you can see them from the other end of the long walkway.
I am not the only ghost that has been trapped here, I walk by the old man that always sits in the same spot, right outside the women's clothing store. When he speaks he only says one line, “I’m waiting for my wife.” I do say that it makes me quite sad. I look at his feet and see another bloodstain. That must have been where he had died too. I’ve tried to talk to him by telling him my name, Kyle. But it falls on deaf ears.I look around and see about 10 of us mindlessly walking the same mall. Some are nice, but the others… Well lets just say we don’t go around them. Their dark souls are filled with hate and revenge, something I want nothing a part of.
I walk down to the entrance doors that I so desperately want to walk out of. But everytime i try I just get teleported back to where I died. I sigh heavily, I look up at the sky and its dark clouds fill up the full moonlit sky. Halloween marks the anniversary of what the news called ‘Mall of Horrors.’ If I had just stayed at home that night. A big roll of thunder echoes the empty mall, lightning strikes right outside, hitting a power line. That’s when I see them, 2 teenagers coming to the mall doors with a camera. I run and hide and then curse myself, I'm a ghost. They cannot see me. I watch as the girl walks right in front of me.
Maceys’ POV
“Garrett! Slow down! I can’t walk that fast!” I stumble over my feet and almost fall. I look up and see the creepy abandoned mall. I shiver, I was 10 when it happened, the murders of the Mall of Horrors. I am 16 now and my boyfriend thinks it's a grand idea to film inside, on Halloween!
The storm is coming in and coming in fast. The thunder booms followed by a strike of lightning that hits a power line right in front of us. I scream, “AHH!” I duck and Garrett looks back amused.
“Afraid are we?” he chuckles, his tall frame standing in front of me. I look up into his big brown eyes and nervous laugh. He is a football player, obsessed with this Mall for some reason.
“Me? No.. Why would you say that?” I ask, straightening my shirt and wiping my sweaty palms. He laughs again and grabs my hand.
“If you weren’t so damn cute, Mace..” I blush.
I don’t think I'm that cute, I'm not a model like what he used to date. I am average, I'm 5’4 with long brown hair with blue tips. I’m pretty curvy, I look down at myself. I have had glasses since 4th grade. I’m not sure why he sought me out, but I am glad he did.
“Tyler, the man arrested for the murders, claims he was possessed. He claims the entity left him with his last victim. I think it’s time to see if he is telling the truth or not.”
We make it into the mall just in time, the rain falls hard and fast. I take a look around and gasp, “They didn’t clean it up?” He turns to me and smiles.
“Guess not. Ok, let's start filming.” He takes the camera and turns it on.
“Hey guys! We made it, the Mall of Horrors here in front of us. Is it haunted? Are people just afraid for no reason? Let’s find out tonight.. On Halloween.” he turns it off and turns to me. I bite my lip.
“I won't let anything hurt you.” he says and I do not feel even the slightest bit better.
I turn to look around and that’s when I hear it. Something fell and is rolling towards us. I jump and run behind Garrett.
Kyles’ POV
“s**t!! I forgot that tonight is the only night we can interact with the living. Why are they here? This is not good, I look out and see the dark ones stalking near them. One of them throws something hard at them and it falls to the ground, rolling to the couple. They spot me and I back away. I watch as they get closer to the couple, the girl.. Mace?... She jumps and runs behind the tall guy. He seems amused. He picks up his camera and starts filming.
“This just came flying at us, now it is either someone toying with us, or something is trying to get us to leave. Let's investigate.” he says and she grabs his shirt.
“I think we should leave.”
“Yes! Leave!.” I say outloud and her head whips in my direction.
“Did you hear that?” she asks and the man shakes his head no.
“Come on, Macey. This is what we came here for.” he persuades her. She nods her head.
The dark ones come closer and one of them stares at them as they push further in.
This is not good, they need to go. I do not know what they are capable of.
I follow them from afar and watch the man, Garrett film and talk, he talks about the murders that happened here, and then I hear my name. My ears peak with interest.
“Kyle Marshall was a teenage boy, here shopping with his little sister, gathering last minute costume items. He is the hero of this story, saving his little sister by shielding her with his own body. Heroic is the only word coming to mind. If you are here Kyle, you are awesome.” I smile at his mention of me. I haven’t heard that story in a long time. Shortly after what happened the mall closed down permanently.
Something is coming at them, hard and fast. I Yell, “watch out!” They both jump. Looking at me when a metal pipe comes hurling at them, hitting Garrett.
Maceys’ POV
“AAAHHH!!!! RUN!” I scream and take off running towards what I thought was the exit. I look back and Garrett is nowhere to be found. The light breeze from the holes in the walls lightly brush up against my arm; causing me to get goosebumps. I try to steady my breathing as I peak around and see nothing, no Garrett, and no.. no.. whatever that was.
Ok ok, pull yourself together. I step out and something swooshes past me and I gasp. The coldness causes a shiver to run down my spine, the smell of rotten meat fills the area. I look up and see Garrett standing there looking up at the ceiling.
“Garrett.” I called out but I got no response.
I slowly walk to him, something giving me an uneasy feeling. I reach out and touch his shoulder, he tenses.
“Garrett?” I whisper.
He turns around with a sinister smile and screams. No words, just screaming. It startles me and I jump backwards.
“Garrett?” I say again and his head whips to me, his smile falters and his eyes lock on mine. He crouches down like he’s about to charge at me.
“Knock it off, Garrett! Or I'm leaving!” I say trying to sound more stern but it comes out in a whisper.
“You will never leave.” he says and he starts cracking his neck. I jump up and look around frantically. I spot some kind of light blinking. I look back at him and he starts charging after me.
“Ahh!” I yell as I take off.
“This way!” I hear a young male voice, at this moment I listen and follow the voice. It leads me to a small hallway and the door flies open and I step in and it slams. I place myself against it.
“Wh…who are you?” I am afraid of the answer.
“Kyle.. Marshall.” I gasp and throw my hands over my mouth.
“No.. no that is not possible.. He died!” I say and he shushes me.
“Quiet, he will find you.” I turn and lock the door.
“I do assure you that it is me, I'm not here to hurt you. I just want to help. Your boyfriend has been taken over by the dark ones.” he says in a rush and i feel like my head is spinning.
“Ok.. Ok say I believe you.. What can I do to help Garrett?” I ask and Kyle turns to me. He looks real but so different too. He is not what I pictured a ghost to look like, he looks just like you and I but like, see through almost. Like if I were to touch him my hand would just slip right through the air.
“The dark ones want revenge on people. All people, it does not matter to them. This is the second time they have done this. You need to get him to follow you out of the mall, they will instantly leave him. They cannot travel outside this area no matter the circumstances.” I nod.
“Ok, how do I do that without being caught?” I ask. I have to be hallucinating…This can’t be real. So I just roll with it.
“Let me find him and see if I can find a way to get out quickly and safely.”
“Ok.”
He walks through the wall and is gone for a few minutes. He pops up and I gasp.
“Sorry, it’s just me.” he says and I grab my chest.
“A warning would be nice.” I say and he looks sympathetic.
“He is in the main lobby, if you can get out of here and turn right. He will be to your left, make noise and he will follow.” Kyle says and I look at him.
“Thank you.. And uh.. I’m sorry about what happened. I go to school with your little sister, she talks highly of you. If that helps you.. Like.. move on.. Sorry.” I say and I slip out the door.
Fear takes hold of me as I make my way to the place Kyle told me to go.
Garrett is right there where he said, he is twitching looking around like a rabid animal. I shiver and take a deep breath.. Ok. I can do this, I have to.
I call out his name and without hesitation he starts running for me. I panic and turn towards the door. I run as fast I possibly can and throw myself out the door, Garrett follows me landing on top of me with a hard thud we slam into the concrete.
“AAAHHH, Get off me!! Get off me!!” I scream, thrashing around.
“Ow! Why are you hitting me?” he says groggily. I look up and see those beautiful brown eyes. I sigh in relief.
“You're back.” I say and he looks confused. I look down and see the camera sitting at the edge of the doorway. I lean up and grab it quickly, I look up and see Kyle standing there smiling at me.
“Thank you.” he says and the next thing I know a white beam shoots down and he is gone. I smile.
The rain is still coming down pretty heavily, I am soaked now. “What happened?” Garrett says and I laugh relieved.
“This will make for a great video, let's get to the car and I will explain.'' I say and he nods as we get up and walk to the car. I look back again and see a dark figure glaring down at us from the top of the mall. I shiver and step inside.
