CHAPTER 1-THE ATTACK
Ravena’s POV
I got out of the movie theater, and I was still blinking at the bright night lights, attempting to remove the sticky popcorn smell that was inside. I exited the film earlier than I was supposed to, I wanted to see my boyfriend, he had been evading me the last three days and I had to know what was going on but before I could make a single step towards my car, a whistling, sharp sound cut through the air. My stomach dropped.
I had barely time to think when I was being grabbed. My body responded first before my brain. I was next aware of having my personal guards all around me, which they had made into a sort of wall. I had not time to see what was on when they were hauling me into a waiting car.
I felt a sharp pain running across my ear suddenly. I put my hand on the side of my face and drew it away full of warm blood. My head ached a bit, and my ear pricked with a sharp pain.
“Miss!” the leader of my security,Scar, yelled, his voice deep, but desperate, as he shut the car door behind me.
“I am all right,” I replied, rubbing my hand over my bleeding ear. “It’s nothing.”
“Nothing?” he asked, frowning. “You’re bleeding, miss. You need to get that checked.”
“I would like to know what has happened,” I insisted.
Scar hesitated, and looked around at the guards. “You were attacked, Miss. That is all we know, he said, tightening his voice. “But you’re safe now. We are taking you to a safe place.
“What do you mean? Who attacked me? Why?” I requested, and my heart began to beat faster. My hands were trembling a little, and I reached out to open my phone. “I want to call my father now.”
Scar’s jaw tightened. “Your father informed us already, Miss, that you were to be brought to him immediately. There’s no need to call him. You’ll be safe with him.”
I gulp and attempted to calm down my breathing. I didn’t like being in the dark. I hated feeling powerless. Scar drove down the city streets in a fast manner, the sound of the engine barely covering the sound of my heart beating in my ears.
When we arrived at the palace of my father I was nervous and my body remained tense due to the sudden attack. Guards were on the main gates and the grand doors opened to receive us without saying a word. When we got inside I had the little sting in my ear being cured by the palace doctor.
“It was only a slight cut, Miss,” he said, applying antiseptic on the cut. “It’ll be fine.”
The massive doors swung open once more, and my father, King Varek Thorne, came in. He had a small army of his own werewolf guards, with weapons in position, and on the alert. His presence was oppressive.
“Report!” he bellowed, and looked round the room as though he read their answers all over.
The security leader came forward. “Miss Ravenna missed a bullet, sir. She was taken to safety at once. We do not know who did it, but we have her here now.”
I finally dared to speak. “Father… what happened?” I questioned, and my voice was steady, but the hands trembled a little.
“Somebody had given away very essential information to the other packs,” said Father. “And now it has brought a revolt. They have seized the opportunity of the leak to attack.”
I felt a chill run through me. “Who... who leaked the information? Who did this?” I insisted, and looked up at him, hoping soon to hear a reply.
He had not time to answer when a low, mechanical hum was heard in the room. I turned around to face the noise and my stomach sunk. The blades of a helicopter cut the outer air. My father stiffened to the spot.
“Were you expecting guests?” My question, with a voice that was not even, my fear mixed with my confusion.
“Yes.” Came his short reply.
The doors were opened and two figures entered. I froze. One was a tall, wide-shouldered man, with the presence of command which I knew at once, Lycan King Damien Kael. His dark gray eyes swept the room, and cold and cold and cold, told nothing. The other was younger, more known, my boyfriend, Damon Kael. The sight of him gave me a jump of heart.
“Damon!” And I ran to him, my hands shaking. “I was attacked! Somebody attempted to... my father says that the enemy pack is assaulting! I don’t know what’s happening! I’m scared…are you hurt? Are you okay?”
Damon stood still, his face hard to read. He did not even grab me or touch my hands. “Babe?” I repeated, voice quieter now. “What’s wrong?”
He didn’t answer. His golden-brown eyes remained fixed upon me, and there was nothing in them, no warmth, no comfort. My chest tightened. Why was he so distant? Why had he not been the same Damon I knew?
Rather, Damien came forward with a smooth voice that was full of authority. “Is she the one?”
I froze mid-step. The question was hanging in the room, and it was sharp and dangerous. I flitted my eyes between the two brothers, in an attempt to read them, in an attempt to comprehend. Damien looked up at me, with his gray eyes, which were piercing and calculating, and Damon stood still, silent, his body a coiled spring.
I would have liked to ask, to have some explanation, but I could not say the words that were in my throat. I could do nothing but look at my father, whose face could not be read, but was strained.
I gulped to get my nerves under control. “What do you mean… ‘the one’?” I questioned, and my voice was strong although my heart was racing.
