The Scarlet Oath
CHAPTER ONE — THE GHOST IN THE ALLEY The rain didn’t fall so much as it whispered—soft, steady, like the city was trying to hush its own sins. New Verona’s back alleys glistened under neon reflections, puddles trembling with every distant siren. It was the kind of night that made people hurry home, clutching their coats tighter, pretending they didn’t hear footsteps behind them. But Adrian Caruso wasn’t hurrying. He never hurried. He moved through the alley like a shadow that had learned to walk—silent, controlled, lethal. His black suit absorbed the darkness, his gloved hands relaxed at his sides, though every muscle in his body was coiled and ready. The Ghost didn’t need to announce himself. His presence did it for him. Sienna Vale. And tonight, he wasn’t hunting a criminal. He was hunting a woman. A woman he had been ordered to kill. He reached the mouth of the alley just as she stepped out of a small café across the street. The warm light behind her framed her silhouette—long auburn hair tumbling over her shoulders, her coat cinched at the waist, her posture tense but determined. She paused under the flickering streetlamp, scanning the shadows with a sharpness that made Adrian’s jaw tighten. She felt him. Not saw—felt. Her instincts were too good. Her courage was too reckless. Her beauty was too distracting. Adrian exhaled slowly, forcing the thought away. He didn’t get distracted. He didn’t get curious. He didn’t get… anything. The Scarlet Oath had carved that out of him years ago. But Sienna Vale had a way of slipping past defences he didn’t even know he still had. He stepped out of the shadows. Sienna’s breath hitched. She didn’t run—yet—but her hand slid into her bag, fingers curling around something. Pepper spray? A recorder? A weapon? She was unpredictable like that. “Long night?” Adrian asked, his voice low, smooth, dangerous. She stiffened. “Do I know you?” “No,” he said. “But I know you.” Her eyes narrowed, suspicion sharpening her features. “You’re with them, aren’t you?” He didn’t answer. He didn’t need to Sienna took a step back. Adrian took a step forward. The rain thickened, drumming against the pavement like a warning. “You’ve been asking questions,” he said. “Dangerous ones.” “That’s my job.” “And mine,” he murmured, “is to make sure people like you stop.” Her pulse jumped—he could see it in the hollow of her throat. Fear. But not the kind that froze a person. The kind that sharpened them. She reached into her bag. Adrian moved faster. In a blink, he had her pinned against the brick wall, his hand wrapped around her wrist, stopping her from pulling out whatever she was reaching for. Her breath hitched, warm against his throat. She smelled like rain and adrenaline. “Let go,” she whispered. “I can’t.” Their eyes locked—defiance meeting darkness. Her lips parted, breath trembling. His grip loosened without his permission. “You should be running from me,” he said. “Then why aren’t you letting me go?” His jaw tightened. “Because I don’t want to.” The admission slipped out before he could stop it. Sienna’s eyes widened—confusion, fear, something else flickering through them. Adrian stepped back a fraction, but not enough to break the tension humming between them. Not enough to stop the pull he felt toward her. A car engine roared at the end of the street. Adrian’s instincts snapped back into place. He grabbed Sienna’s waist and pulled her into the shadows just as a black sedan rolled past, windows tinted, moving too slowly to be innocent. Sienna gasped. “Who—” “Not me,” Adrian said. “Someone else wants you dead.” Her breath trembled. “Why?” “Because you found something you shouldn’t have.” She swallowed hard. “And you?” Adrian looked down at her, rain dripping from his hair, jaw clenched. “I haven’t decided yet." For the first time in his life, the Ghost didn’t know whether he was going to kill his target ……or protect her. And that terrified him more than anything. For a moment, neither of them moved. Sienna was pressed against Adrian’s chest, her fingers curled instinctively into the fabric of his suit. She could feel the strength beneath it—solid, unyielding, like he was carved from the same stone as the city’s oldest buildings. His breath brushed her temple, warm despite the cold rain. She hated the way her body reacted to him. Hated the way her pulse jumped. Hated the way she felt safer in the arms of the man sent to kill her than she ever had alone. Adrian slowly loosened his grip, but he didn’t step away. His hand remained at her waist, thumb brushing the edge of her coat as if he wasn’t ready to let go. “You shouldn’t be out here alone,” he said quietly. Sienna lifted her chin. “I’m not alone." His eyes flicked to hers—dark, unreadable, but something flickered there—something he didn’t want her to see. “You don’t know me,” he said. “Then tell me,” she whispered. He froze. The rain softened, turning into a mist that clung to their skin. The streetlamp above them flickered again, casting shadows across his face—shadows that made him look both dangerous and heartbreakingly human. “I can’t,” he said finally. “Can’t,” she repeated, “or won’t?” His jaw tightened. “Both.” Sienna’s breath trembled. She wasn’t sure if it was fear or something else entirely. Something that made her chest tighten and her stomach twist. “You’re supposed to kill me,” she said softly. “So why haven’t you?” Adrian’s eyes locked onto hers, and the world seemed to narrow to that single point of connection. “I don’t know,” he said. But he did know. And she knew he knew. He stepped back, just enough to break the contact between them, but not enough to break the tension. His hand lingered at her waist for a heartbeat longer before he forced it away. “You need to leave the city,” he said. “Tonight.” Sienna shook her head. “I’m not running." ”You don’t understand what you’re involved in.” "Then explain it.” “I can’t.” “Then stop telling me what to do.” Her voice cracked—not with fear, but with frustration. With exhaustion. With the weight of secrets she’d been carrying alone. Adrian’s expression softened, just barely. “Sienna…” She hated the way her name sounded in his voice. Soft. Careful. Like he was afraid it might break. “You’re in danger,” he said. “Real danger.” “I know.” “And you’re still not afraid?” “Oh, I’m terrified,” she said. “But fear doesn’t mean I stop.” He stared at her for a long moment, rain dripping from his hair, his breath visible in the cold air. “You’re going to get yourself killed,” he said. “Maybe,” she whispered. “But I won’t stop until I know the truth.” Adrian’s eyes darkened. “Some truths aren’t meant to be found.” “And some lies aren’t meant to be buried.” He exhaled sharply, a sound that wasn’t quite a sigh, wasn’t quite a growl. He stepped closer again, close enough that she could feel the heat radiating from him despite the cold.
