chapter 8 The puppet master

Mark was gone. The police. Took Mark away, from the hotel surveillance room. They treated Mark like a person. I looked at the security footage again before I shut the laptop.

I should have felt happy because I had won. I had taken back my company I had taken back my money. I had taken back my dignity.. When I looked at the black screen, I felt a cold knot in my stomach. It was my company that I had taken back my money that I had taken back and my dignity that I had taken back.. I did not feel happy. I just felt a knot in my stomach as I stared at that black screen.

Mark was really something that other people used. He was, like a loud hammer, that someone would swing around. This hammer was not very smart it just made a lot of noise.. The person who was using Mark, the person who was swinging that hammer, was still out there somewhere.

"You are frowning," Xaviers voice came from the doorway. The company is now ours, Evelyn. We just got the company, Evelyn. This is a deal for the company, Evelyn. You should be happy about the company, Evelyn.

I turned to face him. "Mark was not smart enough to think of this plan by himself, Xavier. The Vane family has been giving Mark money for a time. They wanted the shipping routes for themselves. Now that Mark did not succeed, do you think the Vane family is just going to give up and walk away from the shipping routes? The Vane family will probably try something because they really want those shipping routes.

Xavier came over to me. The Vanes are a deal, and they make me nervous. Xavier being made the room feel cozy, and that made me feel safe for the first time in hours. He said, "No. The Vanes are, like sharks. If the Vanes smell blood, the Vanes will bite."

He reached out. Gently took the silver laptop from my hands. "But they forgot one thing," he said. The city we live in it belongs to the Knights and the Thornes. The Knights and Thornes are the ones who really own this place. Let the Knights and the Thornes come. I am not afraid of them.

The morning I went back to the Thorne Group office. It felt really different this time. The people who work there were not talking about me behind my back anymore, saying I wear clothes. Now they looked at me in a way they were scared of me, and they respected me. I was not someone they thought of as the housewife anymore. I was the Chairwoman of the Thorne Group now. The employees saw me as the Chairwoman.

I was sitting at my desk looking over the mess Mark had made of our accounts. Then my intercom started buzzing.

"Ms. Thorne?" my assistant Sarah said. She sounded really nervous. "You have a visitor," she told me. "This person says he is supposed to see you that he has an appointment, with Ms. Thorne."

I did not schedule anyone.

​"It’s Sebastian Vane."

My pen just stopped working. The guy actually had the nerve to walk into my building the morning after they arrested his friend.

"Send him in," I. I straightened my blazer. I did not want him to think I was nervous. I was going to stay calm when I met him.

The double doors opened. Sebastian Vane walked in. He was really different from Mark. Mark was a guy in a pretty obvious way. Sebastian Vane was quiet and pale. He had sharp features. Sebastian Vane moved like a snake. He was wearing a really nice suit that fit him perfectly.

"Ms. Thorne, " Sebastian said with a smile.. It was not a nice smile. It did not make his eyes happy. "Or should I say, Mrs. Davis?" he asked. Sebastian had heard about the problems at her home the night before. "I heard about your problems, at home night," Sebastian said to Ms. Thorne.

"I said it is Ms. Thorne, " I said, and I did not stand up. Ms. Thorne is who I am.. I know who you are, Mr. Vane. You are the man who paid my ex-husband to betray me Ms. Thorne.

Sebastian laughed quietly. He sat down in the chair across from my desk without me telling him to. "Betray is a strong word. I just gave Mark a chance to do something. He was a greedy person. It is not my fault that Mark was not very good at his job. I simply offered Mark an opportunity. Mark was a man, and he made his own choices."

I looked at the person. said, "What do you want?" I was holding the armrest of my chair really tight.

I am a businessman, Evelyn. Mark did not do what he was supposed to do with the shipping routes. So I am here to make you an offer directly. He slid a folder across the desk. I want you to sell the logistics division to Vane Enterprises. We will pay double the market price for the logistics division.

I opened the folder. What I saw was really something. The number of dollars in it was huge. It was five hundred million dollars. This amount of money is enough for the money to let me retire on an island and never have to go to work again. The money from this five hundred million dollars would be more than enough.

What happens if I say no?

Sebastian leaned forward. His smile was gone. The room felt really cold all of a sudden. Sebastian looked around the room. The cold feeling was everywhere. The room that was warm a moment before now felt very cold to Sebastian.

Your mother was a stubborn woman, Evelyn. I am talking about Eleanor Thorne she thought she could fight us the people in our group. Do you remember what happened to Eleanor Thorne?

My heart stopped beating for a second. I said to myself, "My mother died of an illness." The words my mother and the illness she had are still very hard for me to think about. My mother was a part of my life, and it is tough for me to accept that my mother is really gone because of that illness.

Sebastian whispered to himself, "Did she really do something?" He tilted his head a little. ". Was she just in our way?" Sebastian thought about this for a moment. "It would be very bad if the new Chairwoman got very sick all of a sudden, like what happened,"

I felt really sick to my stomach. The letter that was inside the safe said something that scared me. It said I was poisoned by something. The letter, in the safe, was what told me this news.

I got up from my chair, and my hands were shaking with anger. "Are you trying to scare me? This is my office. I do not like it when people try to scare me in my own office. What is going on here? Are you really trying to threaten me?

"Listen to what I'm saying," Sebastian said, standing up to look down at me. "You should sign the deal Evelyn. You should go back to being a socialite. The war between our families is too big for Evelyn to handle. Evelyn does not belong in this war it is too much, for Evelyn.

He turned to leave.. The door just would not open.

Xavier was standing there. He was just standing there Xavier was.

He did not smile. He was not charming. This man looked like a guy who had just come out of a very bad place. He stood in front of Sebastian. Would not let him pass. He blocked Sebastians path.

"Mr. Knight " Sebastian said, he looked a little nervous, for the time. "I am going to leave "

Xavier took a step forward. This made Sebastian step back into the room. Xavier was moving towards Sebastian and Sebastian had to move from Xavier. He went back into the room because Xavier was coming towards him. Xavier and Sebastian were, in this situation now.

Xavier said "I heard you mention Eleanor Thorne". His voice was really low. It sounded kind of scary. "If you say Eleanor Thornes name again or if you threaten Eleanor Thorne again" he said, "I will not buy your company, Sebastian".

Xavier grabbed Sebastian by the lapels of his suit. Slammed him against the wall. There was a crack. The sound of that crack echoed through the office. Xavier was really angry with Sebastian. The office was quiet for a moment, after the crack.

Xavier said this in a mean tone: "I will bury you in it."

Sebastian was really struggling to breathe his feet were not even touching the floor. Xavier had him right where he wanted him. He just stood there staring at Sebastian for what felt like a really long time it was like he was looking deep into Sebastians eyes trying to see what was going on inside his head. Then Xavier just let go of him. Sebastian fell to the floor. Sebastian quickly fixed his suit, which was all messy and he gave us a look that was full of anger Sebastian was really mad at us you could see the hatred, in his eyes Sebastian just looked at us with hatred.

Sebastian said to the Knight "You have started a war Knight." He was really angry. He hissed when he said that. The Knight cannot keep her safe forever Sebastian told him. Then he went back, to the door. "You cannot protect her forever " Sebastian said to the Knight.

Xavier told the person to get out. He said it in a voice.

Sebastian stormed out of the room. It was really quiet, in there now. The room was very quiet after Sebastian left.

I looked up at Xavier. My knees felt really weak. He admitted it Xavier. They did a thing. They killed my mother.

Xavier walked over to me. He did not say anything all. He just pulled me into Xaviers arms. Xavier held me tight like Xavier was keeping me safe from everything, around me.

​"Then we take everything from them, Evelyn," Xavier whispered into my hair. "We don't just beat them in business. We destroy them. Every last cent."
