On The Run

"Sir? Sir! What are you doing?! They mean no harm!"
"It's better we attack before they do Ms. Medly." He justified, still staring at the monitor. "Fire!"
I looked to the monitor that showed the explosion of the small little planet.
"They didn't even know that we existed! You're just a monster!"
He turned and gave me a calculating stare, "I doubt that. Whose side are you on Ms. Medly?"
It didn't take time for me to consider my answer. "The side of life and equality!"
He let out a humorless chuckle, "there's no 'equality' in life these days. It's better when you're ahead."
He wasn't going to listen to reason, so I took the coffee I was drinking and spilled it all over his expensive machine.
The system shut down right as he was about to fire again.
"Are you out of your mind?!"
"I'm not but you are."
He inhaled deeply, "I'm giving you five seconds to get your things and leave Ms. Medly."
"Gladly sir. I'll be sure to tell the world the truth of who you really are."
"Try that and I'll kill you." He threatened.
''I'd like to see you try.''
He reached in his lab coat for what I was sure was his revolver and I took that as my sign to run.
Which I did. I ran and ran while barely missing each bullet that was fired at my head.

Present Day
The cool autumn breeze brushed against my bare skin. I dwelled in it in for a moment, enjoying this rare moment of serenity.
The crunch of leaves behind me brought me out of my reverie and I mentally scolded myself for being off guard.
Around me was still a bit dark because I was up earlier than usual, and the trees surrounding me didn't make it any better either.
I slowly took the small, hard metal out of the waistband of my tights and scanned the area. For a second, I thought it was just my mind messing with me because the place was eerily silent.
Until the rustle came opposite me again.
"What's got you on your toes?", the gruff voice caused me to spin around and the small revolver ended up pressed against his forehead.
"Were you trying to scare me?" I was still looking around because I had a feeling we aren't alone.
"No, and if I was planning to, I now know not to. Can you please get that out of my face?" He grabbed my hand and I rolled my eyes, concealing the cold, hard metal once again.
"I thought I heard something..." I muttered, still not dropping my guard.
Byron scoffed, "It was just me stepping on dried leaves. I don't know about you but I'm beat, because someone decided to rise earlier than the roosters and skipped breakfast." His tone was sarcastic and he kept his back to me as he packed up our stuff.
"I couldn't sleep and I needed something to do. Plus I didn't want to be alone so you had to tag along." I huffed and crossed my arms.
"Yea, whatever Zeke . I'm gonna go rustle us up some grub. Don't fall too far behind." He lifted our bags and went ahead but I stayed to scan the area once more.
I focused my eyes at the dark spot in between the trees and wondered if there was really something there staring at me. Seeing no signs of movement, I shook my head and tried to catch up with By.
If they had found me things were going to get really bad.

Byron put a spoon of cereal in his mouth then decided to talk, "sho what foo planning sho do today?"
I scrunched my face in disgust and scolded him. "Couldn't you chew first? I know for a fact that sweet lady I saw didn't raise you like that."
He finally swallowed and smiled, "I only do it for you babe."
I rolled my eyes and dropped my spoon, my appetite for my cereal gone. "You disgust me."
"That bile you feel in your stomach is love babe. Love."
Putting my cereal in the fridge, I walked back to the table and leaned into him and smiled. "I guess that explains why I want to throw up everytime I see your face."
"Touché."
"About what I think you said earlier, I have to chance it and go into town to get some stuff."
He finished his cereal and put his plate in the dishwasher then followed me up the stairs, "what kind of stuff?"
"Private stuff." I was in my room changing while By leaned at the door frame.
The action caused his muscles to tense and flex and he ran his hands through his thick brown curly locks.
I walked to the bathroom to freshen up and Byron tailed me again.
"Want me to come with?" Crystal blue eyes pierced mine through the mirror, as if daring me to say 'no'.
"No, I'll be fine By. It's just a quick run in and out."
Just understand that I don't want you to come!
He let a humorless chuckle and crosses his arms, "that's what you said last time and I had to come rescue your ass."
"It wasn't a rescue, the shopping bag burst and I needed your help. I didn't want to be struggling alone."

The drive to the small peaceful town of Sunset wasn't long, but all that could be seen for miles were trees because of where we lived. The secluded area was needed for my survival.
Civilization finally came into view and I drove into the parking lot of the quaint little supermarket. There were only six other cars in the parking lot and the place just had an eerie vibe today.
Pulling my hood up, I walked into the store and was welcomed by the same cheery greeting from the robotic mascot.
"Welcome to the sunshine of Sunset supermarket. Have a sunny day!"
It still annoys me. Even when I'm in a good mood.
I picked up the two packs of what I came for and was waiting in the short line when two guys dressed in crisp suits and dark glasses came in.
Something about them screamed 'government'.
I had to keep my demeanour normal as everyone else in here but in truth I was crapping my pants on the inside.
Just pay and leave. Remain calm.
I eyed them as they walked through the aisles and I wanted to push the woman in front of me out of the line because of how slow she was moving.
She finally moved and I practically threw the items and the money at the cashier.
A hand touched my shoulder and it took every fiber within my being, not to jump too hard and draw attention to myself.
"Um, excuse me young miss?" I turned to see a little old lady smiling at me, "you dropped your keys."
I touched my pockets and looked in her hands to see that it was indeed, my keys.
I smiled nervously, "Oh, thank you."
Just stop being paranoid Zeke.
I collected my stuff and made a beeline for the door.
"Hey! You there, can we have a word?!" A shout came from one of the men.
The automatic gears in my feet shifted and I moved even faster.
"Stop!" One of the men shouted.
If I was Dory I'd be singing 'just keep swimming, just keep swimming'.
My brisk walk turned into a sprint, but I still had to run across the lot to get to my car.
But in that moment, something strange happened.
I don't know if my paranoia was making me see things, but time slowed down and I warped from across the lot and into my car.
Looking through the windshield, I saw that the men had warped as well, but they weren't in the parking lot.
I sat for a while to see if this was only my imagination, but there was no proof that this was in my head.
