Chapter one
"Two glasses of champagne thank you"
Ophelia ordered, tipsy as she leaned forward against the counter doing everything but staying sober.
It was a Saturday night, it was cold and snowing, and for the first time since the year began Sayre was out.... Outside isolating. Today was Anna's birthday, a friend of her's since kindergarten.
"Thank you"
Sayre sighed. She needed to leave this party. She was exhausted from standing and judging people from the back of the club. She needed to be in her bed because nothing literally beats rotting in bed all day and being depressed.
She drew in a shaky breath, suddenly feeling uneasy.
This party was nothing other than a friendship tradition. Every single year, every one always gathered for one another's birthday party. It was like a ritual, to keep the friendship together.
A ritual that didn't seem to work anymore because they had all grown apart. Or maybe it was just Sayre that had grown apart from the rest of the four. Ophelia was her friend at least and the other three barely got in contact with her
"Aren't you drinking?"
She shook her head, glancing over at Anna who was busy laughing and making a toast with her other friends
"I need to leave"
Ophelia squinted, setting the other glass of champagne on the table
"You just got here, it's barely twenty minutes." She grabbed her by the arm. "You really need to loosen up and actually get wasted. You cannot continue like this. Here"
Ophelia said, grabbing her drink and thrusting it at her.
"You know I don't drink"
Sayre drawled lazily
"That's the lamest excuse I've ever heard you say. You need to get laid."
"Eww"
She tossed her long braids behind her.
"Oh, yeah, sorry I forgot."
"Forgot what?"
"I don't know, the obvious fact that no one can ever f**k you like Beck, you're still not over that boy."
She shook her head, tsking as she downed her glass
"I'll never understand the relationship between you two. Tell me again why you two stopped talking?" She paused to take a breath"Wait let me take a wild guess"
She drummed her fingers against the side of her head dramatically
"You told him you were only in for the s*x because he was the only one who would suck your toes when you guys had s*x?"
Sayre made a face.
"That is disgusting. Number one, I don't like getting my toes sucked and neither is he the only one who satisfies me in bed. Infact I'll let you know that I have multiple lovers at my beck and call."
"Oh my God."
Ophelia dragged out slowly
"Did you just wish upon the stars?Because baby, it's snowing outside."
Sayre rolled her eyes.
"You're such a hater" She paused.
"And I'm going to prove it to you"
She reached for a man nearby, grabbed him by the tie and yanked him closer. And without a second thought, kissed him.
"Okay girl- Wait, why does that tall dark haired man kinda look like Beck from the back?"
Sayre's head whipped around like a loose machine.
She froze in motion, her senses flying right out of the building the instant she laid her eyes on him.
It was Beck alright, talking to Anna, his back to her. He still had his coat on which meant one, he just arrived and two, he was leaving soon.
He casually turned and caught her eyes. She was still clutching the poor man by his collar. Sayre bit her lip, reaching for the glass of champagne on the table and downed it in one go. She recoiled from the heat of the drink. f**k, that hurt.
"Sorry"
She whispered letting go of his tie, she turned to face Ophelia
"I need to go"
"No"
Ophelia said at once, reaching for her jacket and snatching it out of her grip.
"Are you seriously leaving just because you can't stand him, Do you really hate him that much?"
"I don't hate anybody. I just wanna go home. Now give me my jacket and stop screaming"
"No." Ophelia shook her head. "I'm not going to letyou leave. God, Sayre you're a f*****g adult. Are you going to let a man dictate your life?"
Dictate her life?
Sayre released a breath and without a word, shoved her phone into her pocket and made her way towards the door.
It was freezing outside and there was barely any means of transport out. She whipped out her phone to call an Uber. The app was out of service. She tsked. It was thanksgiving too, no wonder cabs weren't running.
She considered going back into the club but instead stubbornly started to stalk in the snow. She was going to freeze to death if she continued but she went on anyway.
"Sayre"
She stopped at the sound of her name. Her legs felt stiff and her heart felt like broken shards of glass that pierced her skin. She recognized that voice too much to ignore it.
Damn him, she thought. The sound of his voice awakened something inside her- Memories.. Horny memories that she'll never be able re-enact with anyone other than him.
She blinked, her lids heavy the from the snowfall. Turning, she c****d her head slightly to see him walking towards her and a new wave of cold hit her, She trembled lifting a shaky hand to her chest and continued plowing through the snow with her boots.
He caught her before she could make it to the next block.
"Do you have a death sentence?"
