Chapter 6: The Unseen Threat
“Someone’s here,” he growled.
And in the distance, a figure slipped away, watching their every move.
Dante stormed through the garden, his senses sharp, his gun already in hand. The moonlight cast long shadows against the mansion walls, but whoever had been there was already gone. The air hung thick with tension, and Isabella’s heart pounded against her ribs like a warning drum.
“Go inside,” Dante ordered her, not sparing a glance as he scanned the darkness.
Isabella obeyed, her hands shaking as she clutched her dress and hurried toward the house. She cast one last glance over her shoulder, her gut twisting with dread. Whoever had been lurking wasn’t just a random trespasser. No one dared step onto Dante Romano’s property without facing certain death.
Inside, Ethan paced restlessly. He’d seen the way Dante had touched Isabella’s hand in the garden, the way her eyes lingered on him too long. Jealousy gnawed at him like a beast, but it wasn’t the time for pride. There was too much at stake.
When Isabella finally burst through the door, she locked it behind her.
“What happened?” Ethan demanded, his voice a rough whisper.
“Someone was there,” she said, voice trembling. “Dante almost caught them.”
The room felt smaller, like the walls were closing in. Ethan wrapped his arms around her tightly. “This is getting too dangerous, Isa.”
She knew he was right. The plan to bleed Dante of his fortune and disappear had seemed simple months ago. But the more she lingered in Dante’s world, the more tangled everything became. Especially with the way her heart betrayed her every time Dante looked at her like she was the only thing that mattered.
As they clung to each other in silence, a message buzzed on Isabella’s phone.
She picked it up, eyes widening at the unknown number’s words.
“I know your secret.”
