Chapter 17. THE NEXT DAY STEPHEN woke up with a start. He bolted upright and saw a dark figure sitting on the chair beside his bed. His heart thundered with the power of a thousand horse’s hooves over his chest as adrenaline zinged through his veins. “It’s me. I’m sorry.” Brad’s voice made him jump a little more and he swiped out his hand, whacking him in the leg. “Don’t do that to me! You scared me half to death!” He lay back down, taking slow breaths to calm his racing heart. He turned to his mate, who was still mostly in shadow. He didn’t like that at all.
