Chapter 1 - Elyansa
Standing on the middle of an amethyst bridge surrounded by darkness and fog, as I got my bearings together, I noticed that the silver moon illuminated the river and, at this moment I realized that there were two of us on this bridge. There is nothing but it and I. This large horned shadow with wings. Even from the distance between us, I know it is a tower of a thing. As I look at it, I know it is studying me and does so without a movement. I cannot see a face or makeout any real distinguishing features besides those wings. "Your wings are beautiful", I say, as I take a few steps forward. As I do so, I am compelled to bend a knee and bow. No sooner than I lower my head, I hear "NO!". It's a male, or at least it sounds like one. When I jumped up at his word, I saw he had his wings fully stretched out and fluttering. "My apologies. I didn't mean to offend you." I put my hands up to show no harm meant. "You could never do any such thing, Elyansa." He knows my name. "Who are you?" As I tried to reach out and take another step closer, I was pulled away and enter back into my reality with an annoying jolt.
"Damnit!" I muttered as I opened my eyes and became reacquainted with my surroundings. I remember I fell asleep in the flower field with the dogs and the prairie-buffalo. I was picking herbs and it's best to do so before midday, but as the afternoon carried on, I took some time to rest and fell asleep. 'Good thing I have a notebook packed because that dream was something.' I said in my head, and not that it was a long dream to write but it was a moving dream. "There are just some things in life I never want to forget Roger." I say scratching my favorite dirty brown prairie-buffalo and he grunts in response, "Dont worry I could never forget about you my big love bug! I gotta get going, but I'll see you in a couple of days Roger."
Walking the path back to the compound, I find myself so consumed by interpreting my dream I hardly notice the handmaid calling my name. "Yansa! Grandmother Hong summoned you hours ago. Please quickly make haste and go see her." We half bent the knee to each other as respect and acknowledgement. I briskly walked to my chambers to drop off my bag of herbs and journal, only to have another servant tell me that grandmother was in the Lunar Hall. I never considered myself lucky but my grandmother is the Iyalode, which is a beautiful name for the head lady in charge here at the House of Night. She has always worked me 10 times harder than my peers and has made me earn my place within the HoN. I am grateful, but being her granddaughter, I have also seen my comrades come and go out into the world as i stay back and wait my turn.
When I arrive in the hall, I kick my shoes right off. Light an incense on the altar, prostrate and pray as it is what our custom requires. When I rise to walk to my grandmother, I straighten myself out and make sure I look as presentable as possible for someone just sleeping in a field. Even though walking across the hall, I find myself questioning the shadows, looking back like I sensed something but only seeing darkness and, since this is the most protected place on earth, I shrug it off and keep walking to the chair where my grandmother sits. It's completely dark outside and only the shadows from the dancing flames of the fireplace are present. Here she sits in her favorite chair looking elegant as usual in her flowing white gown and beautiful gray hair. I prostrate at her feet to show respect. "Aboru Aboye Abosise Grandmother Hong."
Little did I know there were whispers from the shadows behind a curtain that belonged to a side room, "She's finally here, your future has arrived."
