New beginning (Part 1)
On a six meters long and four meters wide screen, Jiang's life story was being projected, eliciting laughter from the hundreds of chairs surrounding.
Without turning around, Jiang could imagine the content of their conversation. For the past years, he had been sitting among the hundreds of chairs, listening to them gossip about others' photos, complain about how dull and tasteless their past experiences were, and how obscure and difficult their future paths would be.
"Congratulations on your release from prison." The prison warden, with a plastered face, unusually showed a hint of a restrained smile, then extended his hand to personally untie the tie embroidered with the prisoner number from Jiang's neck and replaced it with a silver-grey and black diagonal striped tie.
This was a tradition at D1F Prison.
Jiang glanced down at the neatly tied tie, thinking to himself that even though this tradition had continued for decades, the warden's craftsmanship remained as rough as ever, unchanged over the years.
"I hope that after you leave, you will remember everything you experienced in prison. Face your future life sincerely, kindly, humbly, warmly, and bravely." The warden paused, leaning slightly forward.
Jiang obediently lowered his head.
The warden whispered in his ear, "Remember, never beat anyone up in front of the city hall again! Even if they're pure scum!"
Jiang blinked. "Okay."
The warden cleared his throat, withdrew his head, and pressed the nearby call button. "Release Jiang."
There was a corridor one hundred meters long from the prison to the entrance, jokingly called the "Path to Freedom" by the inmates. At the end of the Path to Freedom was a shower room, where the prison had prepared pomelo leaves for each released prisoner to bathe with, as well as a set of clean casual clothes.
Jiang leisurely took a shower, put on the off-white casual clothes, casually stuffed the tie given by the warden into his pants pocket, turned around, and stepped out of the Path to Freedom.
A black hovercar was parked at the prison gate, and the driver waved to him from the driver's seat.
Jiang got into the back seat with his hands empty.
As the door closed, the electronic broadcast activated, and a soft female voice flowed from the speakers.
"Welcome back to a harmonious and beautiful society, Mr. Jiang. I am your life counsellor, Sys10086. Although our time together may only be a short day, I still hope that we can have an unforgettable journey together."
The hovercar lifted off, its engines humming.
The driver activated the navigation system, set the destination, and waited for instructions from the traffic navigation station.
Three seconds later, the navigation station issued instructions. The driver adjusted the automatic speed and route of the car, and the vehicle slowly started moving.
"Today is April 11, 3011. The current outdoor temperature is 18 degrees Celsius, and the evening outdoor temperature is expected to be 8 degrees Celsius. The sunset time is expected to be 18:18."
Jiang interrupted. "Where are we going?"
Sys10086paused for five seconds, followed by a reading progress bar sound. After a while, she said, "We are heading to the StarWorks Job Introduction Center." She jumped directly from the weather forecast to the introduction of the personnel at the StarWorks Job Introduction Center. "It was established on June 1, 2811, and is a long-standing and well-reputed comprehensive job introduction center. Its founder is..."
"Where is your power switch?" Jiang asked expressionlessly.
There was silence again, then she asked, "Are you asking out of curiosity, or do you want to shut me down?"
"Shut down."
...
Beep.
The car fell silent.
After half an hour's drive, the prison hovercar finally stopped in front of the StarWorks Job Introduction Center.
Jiang opened the door, and an automatic ladder descended from the side of the car, perfectly aligning with the ground. He lifted his foot onto the ladder and turned to the driver. "Thank you."
The driver turned around and grinned. "You're not very friendly to Miss Sys10086."
Jiang said, "If one day it can distinguish between friendliness and unfriendliness, maybe I'll feel guilty."
The driver burst into laughter.
Jiang stepped down to the ground.
"Your accommodation will be arranged. Good luck, buddy!" The driver shouted and quickly drove away.
Before Jiang entered the door, the streetlights suddenly lit up, and a low male voice said, "Loud noise on the street, please be mindful."
...
Why was the mayor of this city always so keen on implementing these quirky inventions?
Jiang frowned.
"Mr. Jiang, welcome to the StarWorks Job Introduction Center. I am Customer Service No. 11, fond of bright pink little stars." A middle-aged woman in her forties held flowers in her hands and greeted him with an extremely enthusiastic smile.
Jiang silently accepted the flowers and followed her to the reception desk.
The reception desk was very long, initially estimated to be between 150 and 200 meters. He vaguely saw two black dots at the very end.
Bright Little Star led him to sit on a pink sofa, served a plate of sliced apples, and then silently left.
Jiang put the flowers aside, adjusted his sitting posture, and then saw a smiling old man rising behind the reception desk. "Mr. Jiang, hello, I'm Larry, pleased to serve you. Would you like to continue working in this city, or are you ready to work elsewhere?"
Jiang had already thought about this question long ago and answered without hesitation, "I want to find a job that doesn't require going out."
Larry smiled, "Your profession was data analysis, and you have already obtained the qualification of senior data analyst, fully capable of meeting this requirement."
"No. I don't want to be a data analyst," Jiang disregarded Larry's surprised gaze. "I want to change my working environment."
Larry didn't ask further. "A non-data analyst job without the need to go out..."
"It's better to involve computers," Jiang added.
Larry checked off the manual labor category.
Time passed by second by second.
"We've got it!" Larry smiled first, then frowned. "But this job..."
Jiang looked at him.
Larry raised his head, hesitating. "Are you sure you don't want to flex your conditions a bit?"
Jiang looked at him puzzled.
Larry said hesitantly, "There is a job that meets your requirements. But..."
Jiang looked at him, unable to hold back. "What job is it?"
"It's... online gaming."
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
As soon as Jiang logged in, he found himself standing in a circular pavilion, with four two-meter-diameter white jade columns in the cardinal directions.
A cool breeze, slightly chilly, greeted him, feeling almost like in reality. To perform this job, he must adjust their senses in the game to 96% - the highest level, so he felt almost the same in the game as in reality.
A translucent panel appeared in front of him:
[System log] Congratulations to Employee No. 93 for logging into [Spirit-verse]. Please enter your nickname.
A translucent keyboard appeared in front of his abdomen.
Jiang swiftly typed in the four characters [Golita].
A progress bar appeared below the panel, sweeping across at an extremely fast speed.
[System log] Congratulations to Golita for entering the Spirit-verse, striving for the world where we live together. Now, please choose a Job Mode:
· Miner.
· Boatman.
· Blacksmith.
· Innkeeper.
· Carpenter.
Or Game Mode:
· Swimming competition.
· Tug-of-war.
· Long-distance running.
· Jump rope competition.
· Push-up competition.
Jiang thought for a moment and chose Miner.
He was quickly transported to a barren mountain, where four or five miners, dressed gorgeously and incompatible with the work they were doing, were hammering away at the rocks with iron hammers.
[System log] Please select work clothes and tools.
A hundred colours appeared on the panel.
Jiang randomly selected sky blue.
Then, another hundred sets of clothes of different styles appeared on the panel, each with unique tailoring and characteristics.
He chose a short round-necked set.
Another panel appeared with twenty sets of iron hammer toolbars of varying sizes.
Jiang picked up a smaller one, weighing it in his hand before clicking confirm.
[System log] You have chosen the 16th iron hammer. Please try it once.
Jiang picked up the hammer and struck a nearby rock.
[System log] Energy output 96JQ, failed, please switch to the 15th iron hammer.
Jiang curled his lips and swung the hammer again, this time hitting the rock with more force.
[System log] Energy output 112JQ, subpar, are you sure?
Jiang pressed confirm.
[System log] Employee No. 93 [Golita] selected the 16th iron hammer, energy output approximately 112JQ, falling into the low-level category. Now entering work time, initially set for four hours. Are you sure?
After Jiang clicked confirm again, the panel disappeared, replaced by a fist-sized stopwatch.
Holding the hammer, he swung his arm up and down, striking repeatedly.
After about a dozen strikes, he felt his upper arms sore and almost unable to lift them, and the force of his strikes became weaker and weaker.
[System log] Reminder: The energy output of the last strike did not meet the minimum requirement and is not counted.
[System log] Reminder: The energy output of the last strike did not meet the minimum requirement and is not counted.
[System log] Reminder: The energy output of the last strike did not meet the minimum requirement and is not counted.
...
After six consecutive reminders, a young man in a crimson robe walked over, smiling broadly. "First time, huh? You can't do it like this."
Jiang leaned on the hammer, panting heavily.
The young man patted his shoulder. "The system sets the maximum interval between each strike to thirty-six seconds. That means you can strike once, then rest for a while, as long as you strike again within thirty-six seconds."
Jiang looked at the time, three minutes and twenty-four seconds, then swung the hammer with force.
[System log] Seven consecutive failures, restart counting.
Jiang was dumbfounded. "Will it deduct?"
The young man chuckled, "What do you think? Our job is called the cheapest labor of the 31st century by dark web and under web, you know." He seemed to be timing, swinging the hammer down heavily.
The same striking sound, but his was noticeably louder.
Jiang felt depressed.
He later looked up information. In the 31st century, although society was materially abundant, it was almost effortless for the state to support the people. However, in order to prevent people from becoming lazy and idle, the government abolished unemployment benefits five hundred years ago and only allocated jobs to unemployed individuals.
The young man continued to strike while saying, "Judging by your physique, you shouldn't be assigned here." What kind of strength could you have with such thin arms and legs?
Jiang said, "I chose it myself."
The young man looked puzzled. "Aren't you deceived by advertisements?"
Jiang slowly shook his head, "I walked into the trap myself."
