CHAPTER ONE : The girl who shouldn't have returned
The villagers always said the forest had a way of remembering.
Not forgiving.
Not forgetting.
Remembering.
Aria never believed them.
“Don’t go past the third ridge.”
Her grandmother’s voice echoed in her mind as she tightened her grip on the small cloth bag slung across her shoulder. The warning had been repeated too many times to count—every year, every season, every time Aria even looked toward the dark line of trees in the distance.
“The forest isn’t what it used to be.”
Nothing ever was.
The sky above was a dull gray, threatening rain but holding back, like even the weather was unsure of crossing into the forest’s territory.
Aria exhaled slowly.
“This is stupid,” she muttered to herself.
And yet—
She took another step forward.
The Shadow Forest stood before her like a wall.
Tall, unmoving, silent.
Too silent.
No birds. No insects. No wind moving through the leaves.
Just stillness.
Aria hesitated at the edge.
Just for a second.
Her heart beat faster, her instincts whispering something she couldn’t quite understand.
Turn back.
But she didn’t.
“I’m not doing this for fun,” she said quietly, as if the forest itself needed an explanation. “I just need the flower.”
The Moonshade flower.
Rare.
Hidden deep within the forest.
The only thing that might help her grandmother’s condition.
She stepped inside.
The moment she crossed the invisible boundary—
The air changed.
Colder.
Heavier.
Thicker.
Aria frowned.
“Okay… that’s not normal.”
The trees loomed closer here, their branches stretching overhead like claws, blocking out what little light the sky offered. The ground beneath her feet was soft, damp, almost like it hadn’t seen sunlight in years.
She walked carefully.
Each step measured.
Each breath controlled.
Time felt… strange.
She couldn’t tell how long she had been walking.
Minutes?
Hours?
The deeper she went, the more the forest seemed to shift around her.
Not physically.
But subtly.
Like it was adjusting.
Watching.
“You’re imagining things,” she whispered.
But even as she said it—
A twig snapped behind her.
Aria froze.
Slowly—
She turned.
Nothing.
Just trees.
Dark.
Still.
Her heartbeat quickened.
“Okay… not funny.”
Another sound.
To her left this time.
A low rustle.
She took a step back.
“Hello?” she called out.
Silence answered.
Then—
A presence.
Not seen.
But felt.
Watching her.
Aria swallowed.
“This was a bad idea.”
She turned to leave—
And stopped.
The path behind her…
Was gone.
Her breath hitched.
“No. No, no, no—”
Where there had once been a clear direction back, there was now only more forest.
Identical.
Endless.
Panic crept in.
“This isn’t happening.”
But it was.
The trees didn’t just surround her.
They enclosed her.
Trapped.
Aria’s breathing became uneven.
“Think,” she whispered. “Just think.”
She looked around.
Desperate.
Searching for anything familiar.
Anything that could guide her.
And then—
She saw it.
A faint glow.
Deep within the forest.
Soft.
Silver.
Aria hesitated.
Every instinct told her not to follow it.
But staying here wasn’t an option.
So she moved.
Toward the light.
The deeper she went, the stronger the glow became.
Until finally—
She stepped into a clearing.
And froze.
At the center stood a single flower.
Moonshade.
Exactly as described.
Silver petals.
Faintly glowing.
Beautiful.
Aria let out a breath she didn’t realize she was holding.
“That was… easier than expected.”
Too easy.
She approached slowly.
Carefully.
The air around the flower felt… different.
Charged.
Like something important was about to happen.
Aria knelt beside it.
“This is it,” she whispered.
She reached out.
Her fingers brushed the petals—
And the world shifted.
A sharp pain shot through her chest.
Aria gasped.
The clearing darkened.
The light from the flower flickered—
Then turned black.
“What—?”
A voice echoed.
“You came back.”
Aria’s breath caught.
“Who’s there?” she demanded, her voice shaking.
No answer.
But the presence—
Stronger now.
Closer.
“I don’t have time for this,” she muttered, trying to steady herself.
She grabbed the flower.
And the ground beneath her cracked.
A deep, echoing sound rose from below.
Like something ancient had just been disturbed.
Aria stumbled back.
“No—no, I didn’t—”
“You always say that.”
Her heart stopped.
“Always?” she whispered.
The air grew colder.
The shadows stretched unnaturally.
And then—
From the darkness—
Something moved.
Fast.
Before she could react—
A hand grabbed her arm.
Aria screamed.
But the grip was firm.
Controlled.
“Stop moving,” a voice said sharply.
She froze.
Slowly—
She looked up.
And saw him.
A man.
Tall.
Dark-haired.
Eyes that glowed faint gold in the dim light.
Dangerous.
“Who are you?” she demanded.
He didn’t answer immediately.
Instead—
He looked at the flower in her hand.
Then at her.
His expression darkened.
“You shouldn’t be here,” he said.
Aria pulled her arm back.
“Well, I am.”
A pause.
“And you’re not answering my question.”
Something flickered in his eyes.
Annoyance.
“You need to leave,” he said.
“Not without this.”
She tightened her grip on the flower.
The ground rumbled again.
Both of them felt it.
The man’s expression changed instantly.
“What did you do?” he demanded.
“I just picked a flower!”
“That’s not just a flower.”
Before she could respond—
The voice returned.
Louder.
Closer.
“You found me.”
Aria’s breath hitched.
The man stepped in front of her immediately.
“Stay behind me,” he ordered.
“I don’t take orders from strangers.”
“You do if you want to survive.”
The shadows in the clearing began to move.
Not with the wind.
But with intent.
The ground cracked further.
And something beneath it—
Shifted.
Aria’s chest tightened.
“This isn’t normal,” she whispered.
“No,” the man said grimly.
“It isn’t.”
The voice echoed again.
“You left me.”
Aria shook her head.
“I don’t even know you!”
Silence.
Then—
A low, almost amused tone.
“That’s what you said last time.”
The words hit her like a blow.
“Last time?” she whispered.
The man turned slightly.
His eyes locked onto hers.
And for the first time—
There was something like realization in them.
“What’s your name?” he asked suddenly.
Aria hesitated.
“…Aria.”
The moment she said it—
Everything went still.
The shadows stopped moving.
The ground stopped shaking.
The voice—
Went silent.
The man’s grip on her arm tightened.
“That’s not possible,” he muttered.
“What?”
He stared at her like he was seeing something impossible.
Something that shouldn’t exist.
“You shouldn’t have that name.”
Aria frowned.
“What is that supposed to mean?”
But before he could answer—
The voice returned.
Soft.
Almost… pleased.
“Aria.”
A pause.
“You finally remembered your way back.”
Her blood ran cold.
“I’ve never been here before,” she said.
But even as she said it—
Something inside her…
Disagreed.
A flicker.
A memory that wasn’t quite a memory.
Silver light.
Cracking ground.
A voice calling her name—
Aria stumbled back.
“What is this?” she whispered.
The man stepped forward again.
“Listen to me,” he said urgently. “Whatever you think you’re feeling—it’s not real.”
But the voice—
“It is.”
The ground split open.
And from the darkness below—
A faint glow began to rise.
Not silver.
Black.
Aria stared.
Frozen.
Because deep down—
She knew.
This wasn’t the beginning.
It was a return.
And somehow—
She had been here before.
End of Chapter One.
