Chapter 1: Hopes of a Warmer Night
I wish I had someone who could love me during the Christmas season. Somebody to keep me warm. Delilah thought as the wind began to blow, and the air became extremely frigid.
Since the day she was born into the Golden Moon Pack, she has never been happy. Especially seeing all of her friends find mates.
Yet, as the Christmas season drew near, her heart began to flutter with more hope. Like for once it could be her turn.
When suddenly the sound of boots crashing against the snow-covered street echoed in the silence of the air.
And her heart began beating inside her chest. Then, the sound of someone talking rang in the air.
"Hey, Delilah, did you see this?" Annie spoke, her voice just above a whisper.
Delilah looked from one side to the other, rubbing her hands over her shoulders.
And her mind raced with every passing second.
Who's talking to me? It's as though their words are muffled behind a mask. She wondered as her feet came to an abrupt halt.
"Seen what?" Delilah asked, turning around, only for her mouth to drop in shock.
Annie waved a freshly printed newspaper in the air, as a smile came across her face.
Something big was happening, and she was way to ecstatic not too share it.
"This! The Alpha of Red Moon pack is looking for a mate!" Annie hollered, excitement filling every word.
For many years, it was said that one Lucky Alpha would have the chance to finally have his one true love. But, it wouldn't be easy, cause not everyone got that chance.
Now, 100 years have passed, and this generation might get it.
However, Delilah stared at Annie, skeptical of the situation.
No. There's no way that's possible! Who would look for their one true love that way? Isn't it the Moon Goddess who chooses them for every single wolf in the world? Delilah pondered, unsure of what that meant, and how her life might turn upside down in the blink of an eye.
Slowly, Annie reached out her hand, placing it comfortably on Delilah's shoulder.
Then she leaned closer to her ear, a thought appearing in her mind.
What can I say to ease her worries? Could I maybe tell her the good thing about it, even though this is a forbidden type of relationship? Annie wondered as she rubbed Delilah's shoulder comfortingly.
And with every caress, a sigh escaped Delilah's lips as her words lingered in her ear.
"Come on, Delilah. This'll be worth it. I know how much you hated being the daughter of our Omega. So, why don't you take this chance to turn your life around?" Annie spoke, her voice just above a whisper.
To which, a shiver ran down Delilah's spine. Then she sighed.
"Asha, what do you think? Is this something to be afraid of?" Delilah asked her wolf, as she opened her mind.
Since the very moment she turned 15, and the appearance of her wolf, they never separated. Delilah always loved receiving support no matter the circumstances that came her way.
And now was the most important time when Delilah needed her the most.
However, Asha was silent. So she did the only thing she could do; rely on fear.
"I don't know about this. It might be a ploy from our enemies to force us to play their game." Delilah responded softly, unwilling to see beyond what she was taught.
But, at the back of her mind, hope still lingered, not willing to leave.
And Annie nodded her head in understanding, taking in Delilah's every word.
"I see what you're saying. But, just think about it. Promise?" Annie stated, a small smile on her face.
I don't know why she's insisting on getting me to do this. Annie most definitely knows the importance of waiting for our mate. Yet, she wants me to be presumptuous and take things into my own hands! Delilah pondered as a sigh escaped her lips.
Then she exhaled, resignation forming on her mind. With every breath Delilah took, a sense of calm washed over her. And she began to stand taller, despite the frostbite which has started to form on her fingers.
You know what? I'll do this. But, only to humor her. Then, she'll see that this isn't the right decision! Delilah thought, intensely into Annie's eyes.
And she nodded her head in agreement. Even though Delilah was hesitant on how to answer her best friend, she knew how important their relationship was. So, she decided to do something that she's never done before.
"Okay. I'll think about it. But no one should know about this." Delilah whispered, despite the wind beginning to blow faster.
"Awesome. Thank you for at least thinking about it." Annie stated, running her from Delilah's shoulder to her hand.
Then squeezing it tightly, confirming the agreement.
Yet, Annie's mind began to race as her words kept playing in her brain.
I hope she'll keep her end of the deal. She has to know that this is the best thing for her. She thought as she trudged her way back to the pack house through the snow, leaving Delilah standing in the frigid weather.
"Dear Moon Goddess, please give me the strength to go on with this. You know how I don't really like listening to other people's words." Delilah prayed silently, when suddenly, a loud howl echoed through the air.
"Delilah! Where are you? If you're not home right now, you'll be confined to your room!" Omega David, Delilah's father howled from the pack house.
Each word he spoke, sent a horde of panic straight to her heart, making everything harder than it needed to be.
"He's got to be kidding me! Why does my dad always have to do this? What is so important that he has to define my every step?" She whispered under her breath with rising frustration.
Then she opened the mind-link, not wanting to let her father's anger grow further.
