Chapter 1: The Weight of the Gavel Episode
The mahogany boardroom table of Guildford Logistics looked less like an executive suite and more like a runway for sharks.
"Let’s make this official," Ariana Guildford announced, taking her seat at the absolute head of the table. "As of today, I am taking over as the active Head of Guildford Logistics. I expect full transparency from every department."
Fifteen board members all men in their forties and fifties turned as one to stare at her. There was zero respect in their eyes.
Ariana smoothed the sharp lapels of her black blazer, hiding the cold sweat on her palms. Exactly seven years had passed since her father, the legendary Vincent Guildford, had died. She had spent that entire decade running from his shadow, completely checked out from his world.
But the running was over. She was back, standing in the middle of a corporate nightmare.
"Miss Guildford, your father was a rare genius," a senior board member sneered from the back, his mocking chuckle making her blood run cold. "You haven't stepped foot in this city for nearly a decade. Do you even know what our current quarterly profit margins look like?"
The meeting only deteriorated from there.
For three agonizing hours, the board threw complex logistics jargon and declining financial sheets at her, deliberately trying to crush her spirit. They wanted to see her cry.
By 7:00 PM, the boardroom finally emptied out.
Ariana was left completely alone in the dimming office, staring at the mountain of work on her desk. She brushed back her cascading, espresso-brown hair, a single tear of pure frustration slipping down her cheek. She was entirely isolated, trapped in a cage of her own making.
Suddenly, her phone vibrated on the polished wood.
An unknown, restricted number flashed on the screen.
Ariana hesitated, her heart hammering violently against her ribs, then slid the screen to answer. "Ariana Guildford speaking."
"I don't waste time, Ariana," a smooth voice murmured on the other end. It carried a dangerous, razor-sharp edge of confidence that made her breath hitch. "The famous Ariana Guildford. Daughter of Vincent. Thee Vincent Guildford. I hear you're making the news today."
Ariana sat up straight , her hand tightening around the receiver. "Clearly, news travels fast."
"You forget this is a small town," James Loretto replied.
James. The city's most famous billionaire CEO. He was notorious for his fiercely competitive attitude and absolute dominance over the property markets. Standing at a commanding 6'2" with a sharp, marble-carved jawline and thick blonde hair, he looked like a golden angel.
But it was a beautiful mask. His hidden cruelty made him lethal.
"Though, I do have a proposal for you," James added, his voice sliding over her frayed nerves like silk.
"Let's hear it," Ariana said. A strange, long-forgotten warmth fluttered in her chest at the sound of his voice.
"As your former childhood friend, I'd like to help you out with the business where I can," James explained, his tone softening deceptively. "Because let's be honest. Everyone is craving that company right now, and I'm just here to save you, princess."
James let out a low, dark chuckle that sent an electric shiver straight down her spine. Before Ariana could even process the sudden rush of childhood memories, he cut her off.
"Ariana," he said, his voice dropping to a commanding, unyielding register. "I'm not taking 'no' for an answer. Tomorrow, we'll talk about it over lunch. I'll send you the details."
The line went completely dead before she could utter another word.
