Jeremy sat across from me at the round kitchen table, both of us just randomly staring into space it seemed. Our steaming cups of coffee just sitting in front of us on the table , the aroma seeming thicker than it should have.
The awkward silence between us seemed way off and I couldn’t tell if it was because of the contents on the flash drive which was just lying in the middle of the round table at present almost taunting us or the white elephant in the room, finally Jeremy spoke up as he cleared his throat. Looking up at me he sighed,
“So…”
“So-” I retorted. Sighing he sat up and rubbed the back of his head as he tried his best to find the words,
“Look, I’m not going to beat around the bush here. I can’t get that image of you and that- thing out of my head,” my eyes narrowed slightly at his words but I quickly composed myself. Having him refer to Rafe as a thing bothered me more than it should have,
“Look Jeremy, I don’t know what you want me to say. I don’t have the answers for what you walked in on, because I don’t even know why that happened. All I know is that Rafe-” cutting me off Jeremy cringed,
“There you go again, naming it. Why would you do that?” My mouth gaped slightly at his reaction,
“I’m not naming it, I mean, him. That’s his name Jeremy, his name is Rafe. You were there when he told me his name for god sake, do you think I just made up a name for him,” I said now waving my hand up in front of him.
I was starting to get really pissed off and I couldn’t understand why, I felt this sense of protectiveness which pissed me off even more. What the hell was I doing, defending a being who clearly was not from earth nor even from our solar system. I was defending someone who bunny hopped dimensions in space to come to earth to do what… That was the real issue we were meant to be dealing with right now, not whether or not he had a name or not.
Jeremy narrowed his eyes as he crossed his arms just staring at me as I stood, my small frame almost towering over the round table,
“Well, aren’t we all defensive about Pave,”
“It’s Rafe,” I corrected him,
“Whatever,” He said brushing me off as he looked away. Taking a deep breath I tried to calm myself down, more so because I didn’t understand my irrational behavior right now.
“Look- Rafe tried to kill me the first time we met, but he didn’t. I need to know why that is,” running my hands through my hair I sighed, “What if all we know about the creations has somehow been obscured by the truth, I mean- all of our research aims at the creations being a cruel and barbaric kind of species, and yes I won’t lie that’s exactly what I assumed when they attacked me in my apartment.
But the second time I saw Rafe, something weird happened. His black voids turned into blue orbs, his whole demeanor changed and shifted from this hard and cold thing to someone who didn’t possess those traits at all. Don’t you want to know why that is?”
“No Mel, I don’t want to know why these f*****g things have a soft and squishy side, nor should you. They have been invading earth for centuries if not longer and the governments have done nothing but cover it up.
Denying their existence for like forever and yet here we sit now being told that their existence is in fact real and that we shouldn’t be alarmed, that our safety is of first priority, when they’ve done nothing but lie to us all this time,” fisting his hands he merely shook his head, “These things are not here to sit around a bonfire with us and roast marshmallows Mel, open you’re f*****g eyes and see this for what it truly is.
They are here to harvest us for all that they can get, and those in power are gladly handing us over with no thought, with no regard, all to save their own skins,”
I couldn’t argue any of these things because we had done the research, we had followed the leads and we had more than enough information to blow this thing sky high.
That had been the reason that Rafe and the others had come looking for me, ironic to think that an intern journalist and her photographer would pose such a threat to the creations, it was laughable actually.
Turning my attention toward Jeremy, I merely shrugged as I tried to understand where any of this would eventually lead us. It was clear that the creations wanted to silence this information, but what freaked me out the most was that our own kind, our own human species of elites were behind something far graver and thought nothing of hanging the rest of mankind out to dry.
“So what do we do?” I asked him as I still sat staring at my now cold cup of coffee. Tilting forward Jeremy picked up the tiny silver flash drive,
“Mel, this goes way beyond UFO’s, or Roswell. This whole story is far more disturbing than abductions or crop circles. f**k Mel, once they finally orchestrate their plans on humanity nothing will ever be the same again. We can’t just sit here and allow that to happen, can we?” I just stared at him as I tried to gather my thoughts,
“This whole time it’s seemed more like a fermi paradox, you know- the absence of evidence for intelligent life outside of our own. But now- Jeremy, Rafe is real. His kind are real, and it should freak the s**t out of me, but- it doesn’t,”
“What are you saying Mel?” My mouth felt dry for a moment as I tried to form the words that were swimming around in my head,
“I’m saying that- Rafe is one of them, and for some reason he didn’t kill me. Not once, not twice but all three encounters with him ended in a way where yes he wanted to retrieve the information I had.
But Jeremy, he had the chance to take the flash drive last night, instead he didn’t. I think that possibly- there might be a chance that he could give us more insight on what they are actually up to,” narrowing his eyes Jeremy scoffed,
“You want to trust that thing?” He said rolling his eyes at me,
“No- I’m not saying trust him, but all we’ve known about the creations have been how hostile they are meant to be, Rafe however showed something else.
I think that maybe we could use that to our advantage, you know- maybe I could see what information I could retrieve from him,” I said warily now not meeting his gaze. I didn’t want him to see my eyes, because in all honesty there was allot more to it than that, and I was afraid that Jeremy would see right through it if he looked into my eyes.
There was a long and awkward silence before he sighed,
“So you want to try and have him come to you, spend more time with him, is that it?” his voice sounded hard and skeptical.
“Look at spatial dimensions, time travel. It must have length, breadth, thickness and duration to allow these beings to hop through their time into ours right?” c*****g a brow he nodded as if he still felt lost, “Well, Rafe is one of them. Who better would know how to stop their invasion than him, I could get him to open up to me,”
“Hell no, Mel, you’re not going to use yourself as bait to retrieve this information, all because this thing has a sick fascination with you. I won’t allow it,” He seemed really angry by my proposal. Huffing I sat back in my chair as I crossed my arms,
“Fine, let’s just sit here and leak all the information we have. We’ll probably get arrested and will still be nowhere near knowing how to stop them from taking over our world completely,”
“Seriously Mel, this is too dangerous. Don’t you see-“But I merely cut him off,
“Yes, it’s insanely dangerous, but what choice do we have. Yes humanity have the right to know, and I’m not saying don’t leak the information.
I’m just saying be smart about it, let’s find a way of stopping them instead of allowing our government to squash our story before it even reaches a million people, and us along with it,” He knew I was right, regardless of what he felt toward the situation we were now forced into.
If we just left things to carry on at the pace it was going, there would be no humanity left, the fact that one of the creations seemed to have this weird fascination with me, made it all the more reason to get the information we needed to stop this from happening.
“You’re insane, and probably suicidal you know that,” Smirking I only nodded as I tilted my face to grin at him,
“Does that mean you’ll let me find him?” Rolling his eyes he shook his head in defeat,
“Fine, but so help me Mel, if he so much as touches you again- I’ll be smacking him over the head with something far more lethal than a frying pan,” letting out a chuckle I remembered that incident, and it occurred to me that Rafe probably remembered Jeremy from my apartment.
I would have to ask him about that when I saw him again, I mean- if I saw him again. I had no idea how I was meant to find him, he seemed to find me perfectly fine, I needed to figure out a way to make him come and find me again, and quickly.
