Prologue
Adeline and Killian stood face to face; their eyes locked in a fierce stare down. The air between them was electric, charged with the tension of their unspoken words.
Her hands on her hips and her eyes blazing with defiance. “I can’t believe you would dare to tell me what I can and can’t do,” she said, her voice low and furious. “I’m leaving this town the moment that I turn 18, which is exactly a week away. In seven days, I’ll be long gone from this damn town and there’s nothing that you can do about it.”
Killian stepped forward; his eyes narrowed as he looked down at Adeline. “You’re not leaving,” he growled, his voice deep and menacing. “You’re my mate, Adeline. My wolf recognizes you as such, and there’s nothing you can do to change that.”
Adeline’s eyes widened in disbelief. “Your mate? That’s ridiculous. I don’t even believe in half-human wolves, let alone that I’m some sort of fate mate to one.”
“Believe it or not, it doesn’t change the fact that you are mine,” Killian said, his voice growing louder with each word. “I won’t let you go. I’ll protect you, care for you, and love you for the rest of my life. You’re mine, Adeline, and I won’t let anything take you away from me. Mark my words, I’ll do whatever it takes to have you.”
“You can’t just dictate my life like this, Killian,” Adeline said, her voice low and firm.
“I can, and I will,” Killian replied, his eyes blazing with a fierce determination. “You are my mate. That means you are mine, and I’ll do whatever it takes to keep you here, by my side.”
Her heart raced as she took in the Alpha’s words. She couldn’t believe what she was hearing, the declaration of being his mate and his commitment to protecting her forever. “You can’t just claim me like this,” she said, her voice trembling. “I’m not a possession for you to keep. I have my own life to live, aspirations I want to pursue, and dreams that I want to fulfill.”
Killian was at the end of his wits. He took a step closer to Adeline, his gaze never leaving hers. “Adeline, your life is still your own. As my mate, I will protect you, care for you, and love you. Whether you like it or not, you are not leaving this town or me.”
Adeline’s breath caught in her throat as his words washed over it. She could feel the heat of his body, smell the musty scent of his skin, and see the raw desire in his eyes. For a moment, she was lost in the intensity of his gaze, his mind swirling with conflicting emotions.
“You can’t make me stay,” she said, her voice barely above a whisper. “I will leave this town, with or without your permission.”
His eyes darkened; a hint of growl escaped his throat. “Let me make this crystal clear to you. You will not leave me, Adeline. I will not let you go.”
Adeline shook her head, tears gathering in her eyes. “I can’t stay here,” she whispered. “I don’t belong here.” She paused for a bit. “I don’t belong with you,” her voice trembled.
Adeline’s eyes met Killian’s, and she felt a spark of something deep within her. She couldn’t deny the growing attraction she felt towards him, nor could she deny the sense of safety and comfort she felt in his presence.
“I’ll give you time,” Killian said, his voice low and husky. He was slowly losing his grip on her and he could feel her slipping through the cracks of his fingers as if she would disappear into thin air. “Take all the time you need to believe in what we have. But just know, Adeline, I’ll never let you go.”
With that, his hand shot out, fingers wrapped around Adeline’s wrist, pulling her towards him. She stumbled, her body pressing against his, their eyes meeting in a final showdown.
Her heart was pounding, her body on fire with a mix of fear and desire. She could feel the raw power radiating from Killian, and for a moment, she was sure he was going to claim her right then and there as a safe measure to keep her forever.
But then, as suddenly as it started, it was over. Killian released her, his eyes still blazing as he stepped back. “You are mine, Adeline,” he said, his voice low and steady. “And you will stay with me, no matter what.”
