Chapter 1 - The Man Across The Room
Aurelia Bennett believed in control. Neat schedules, ironclad contracts, perfectly aligned goals. Spreadsheets over people. Results over promises. At twenty-eight, she had carved out a reputation in New York as a woman who never bent, never broke. Love was a luxury for people with too much time. Tonight she was deep in the world she had clawed her way into. The Grand Regency ballroom glittered with crystal chandeliers, white-gloved waiters gliding with champagne, the air thick with expensive perfume and polished wealth. Aurelia hated every second of it. She stood at the edge of the crowd, fingers curled around an untouched flute, red silk dress hugging her curves in a way that felt both foreign and powerful. Elegant. Daring enough to draw eyes. She ignored the stares and checked her phone again. No emails. No emergencies. No escape. Perfect. This gala mattered for her career. Her company expected networking, smiles, charm. So she would deliver. She straightened, expression sliding into professional mode. Showtime. She had just extricated herself from a tedious conversation with a real-estate developer when the feeling hit. Awareness. Hot. Focused. Unmistakable. She tried to dismiss it. Rooms like this were full of eyes. But the sensation only sharpened, curling along her spine. Against every instinct, she turned. There he was. Near the tall windows, city lights framing broad shoulders, one hand holding amber liquid. Dark hair perfectly styled yet effortless. White shirt open at the throat, sleeves rolled to reveal strong forearms. Power. Confidence. Danger. And those dark eyes were locked on her. Not a passing glance. Not polite appreciation. He was studying her. Heat flickered low in her belly. Ridiculous. She did not get rattled by strangers. Deliberately, she looked away, focusing on a passing tray. Her pulse had no right to race like this. Still, the weight of his gaze did not lift. Minutes later she risked another glance. He had not moved. When their eyes met again, a slow, knowing smile curved his mouth. Aurelia snapped her gaze away. The nerve. Chin high, she moved toward the refreshment table, telling herself she had imagined the intensity. Men like him were everywhere in rooms like this. Wealthy, arrogant, accustomed to attention. She wanted none of it. “Ms. Bennett.” The voice came from directly behind her. Low, smooth, velvet over steel. She froze. No need to turn. She already knew. Slowly she faced him. Up close he was worse. Tall enough that she had to tilt her head. Dark eyes that saw too much. Jaw carved sharp enough to cut glass. Devastating. “I don’t believe we’ve met,” she said, voice level. His lips curved. “We haven’t. But I know who you are.” She arched a brow. “That sounds borderline threatening.” “Not at all.” His tone stayed easy. “Just well-informed.” He extended a hand. “Adrian Cole.” The name landed. Of course. Adrian Cole. Cole Enterprises. Billionaire. Tech titan. Frequent magazine-cover material. That explained everything. “Aurelia Bennett,” she said, placing her hand in his. The instant their palms met, electricity snapped between them. Sharp, unexpected, unwelcome. She withdrew too fast. “Do you make a habit of staring at women across crowded rooms, Mr. Cole?” His smile deepened, slow and unhurried. “Only the interesting ones.” Her pulse jumped. She hated it. “I’m not interested,” she said flatly. “That,” he murmured, voice dropping softer, “is where you’re wrong.” The way he looked at her stole the air from her lungs. She took a careful sip of champagne, buying time. “What do you want, Mr. Cole?” “Adrian.” She pressed her lips together. “What do you want, Adrian?” “To talk.” “About?” “Business.” A pause. “Mostly.” The word hung between them, loaded. Aurelia narrowed her eyes. “I don’t discuss business at galas.” “Neither do I.” He leaned in just enough to make the space feel intimate. “But exceptions can be made.” She studied him harder. Something about his certainty unnerved her. “You’ve already researched me,” she said. “Extensively.” “Then you know I’m not easily impressed.” His gaze drifted over her. Warm, deliberate, appreciative. “I wasn’t trying to impress you.” Her stomach flipped. Dangerous. “I should return to my colleagues,” she said, stepping back. “Have dinner with me.” The words were so direct they startled her. She blinked. “Excuse me?” “Dinner. Tomorrow night.” A small, disbelieving laugh escaped her. “I don’t even know you.” “You will.” The quiet certainty in his voice made her hesitate. She opened her mouth to refuse. Instead she heard herself ask, “Why?” His expression softened, just a fraction, but enough to make her chest tighten. “Because the moment I saw you, I knew you were someone I needed to know.” Her heart slammed against her ribs. This was insane. She did not do spontaneous. She did not do mysterious men with smiles that promised trouble. She did not get swept away. And yet something about Adrian Cole pulled at her in ways she could not explain. Aurelia squared her shoulders. “I’ll think about it,” she said. “That’s all I ask.” He reached into his pocket and produced a crisp white card, offering it between two fingers. “My number. In case you decide to be brave.” “I’m always brave,” she shot back. His eyes gleamed. “We’ll see.” With a small, polite nod, he turned and melted into the crowd. Aurelia stared after him, fingers tightening around the card until the edges bit into her palm. For the first time in years, her carefully ordered world felt dangerously close to cracking open. And deep down, a reckless part of her wanted to let it. She slipped the card into her clutch and drew a slow breath, trying to steady the unfamiliar heat still simmering under her skin. The ballroom noise rushed back in, champagne flutes clinking, laughter rising and falling, but none of it felt quite real anymore. Adrian Cole had walked away, yet the space he left behind pulsed with possibility. She told herself it was nothing. A fleeting encounter. A momentary lapse. But as she moved back into the crowd, forcing her professional smile into place, she could still feel the ghost of his touch on her hand. And the quiet, dangerous promise in his parting words. We’ll see. She was not sure whether she dreaded or craved what came next. Either way, control had just become a great deal harder to maintain.
